Vegetable Cupcakes ~ Yum!

I am taking a Master Gardening class through a local university extension that is 3 hours long, one night a week. Each class member signs up to bring snacks at least once. This week it was my turn to bring snacks and our class topic was vegetable gardening. A friend of mine has a cupcake cookbook that had this Garden Cupcakes recipe. I decided to give it a whirl. I also brought a veggie & dip tray and cheese & crackers.
The vegetables are made of M&M's, Fruit Roll-Ups, Starburst, white chocolate melts, Laffy-Taffy, and green icing. I made peas, carrots, turnips, & yellow squash. I frosted each cupcake with chocolate icing then dipped it in Oreo cookie crumbs.

The baby took care of the leftover Oreo's for me. She carefully licked out the creamy centers and tossed the chocolate cookies away. The dog enjoyed a few that she threw on the floor. I think she ate 8 before I stopped her.

He has a what in his where???

I took my 5 year old boy into the doctor because he wasn't feeling well and had a strange rash. The first thing she did was look in his ears. She looked in his right ear and said,"his ear tube is coming out, I'll go ahead and get it out. "

Me: "But, he doesn't have ear tubes."

Dr: "There is something blue in there!"

Me: "Maybe he stuck a blue marker in there & colored the inside of his ear."

Dr: "No, there is an object of some kind in there."

Me: "Really??? Son, What did you put in your ear?"

Son: "Nuffing."

The doctor proceeded to pull a small plastic ball the size of a pencil eraser out of his ear. It looked like a ball of dried glue that was colored blue. We still have no idea what it was, how it got there, and how long it has been there. ( possibly as long as a year). I told my son not to put things in his ear because he wouldn't be able to hear very well. He said, "but mom, I can hear just good." I still hope he learned a lesson.

Composting Cats ~ A happy ending........

We were not sure what to do with the 4 kittens born in our compost barrel. The last thing we need is more stray cats in our neighborhood. Luckily, the mother decided to move her kittens to a new home somewhere in the woods. The only problem was that she only took 3 of the 4 to their new home and left one little sad kitten behind. I called the vet, friends, anyone I could think of to help us save the kitten. The vet told me how to feed it with a dropper, but I wasn't really prepared to raise a kitten. I have a slight allergy to cats, and I'm not particularly fond of them. Since my kids have failed miserably at keeping the dog fed, I knew we weren't suited to be kitty foster parents. I decided to call the local University Extension office to ask if a 4-H student wanted to raise the kitten as a project. The lady who answered the phone visited with me for a few minutes and I explained the situation. She then reluctantly mentioned that she had a barn cat with a new litter of kittens that was a very good momma. She offered to pick up the kitten and give it a try. I was so relieved and grateful for her kindness. I saw her in town later that evening and she told me that the adoption was successful. The kitten was accepted and fed by it's new mother. I was so happy to be able to report the good news to our kids.

?Composting Cats?~An Earth Day Story!

Monday night we spent some time working on our garden beds to get them ready for spring vegetable planting. My husband decided to give the compost barrel a spin because we have ignored it all winter and rotating it was long overdue. He quickly noticed something was wrong when he heard, "th-th-th-thump-thump-thump..." He stopped spinning and looked inside and found 4 small stray kittens. They are wild little buggers that hiss at us if we get too close. We told the kids not to touch them. The girls enjoyed looking at the kittens in the compost barrel.
Is anyone interested in taming one of these kitties? They are FREE to a good home!
Another view of the kittens.

I hope the kittens are weaned soon and they move on so I can get back to composting!

Easter Weekend!

Above: All dressed up Easter morning. It was pouring down rain, but we made it to church in time to hear the first speaker.

Our little princess
Easter morning, snarfing down the goods!

Enjoying the Nature Center the day before Easter.

Some dear friends watched our 5 kids overnight so we could go to the temple and have a little get-away. And they are still our friends~Amazingly! We figured out how to use the timer on our camera to take the photo above of us together. This little get-away was the nicest anniversary gift ever! It was the first time we have been alone overnight in many years. And no, you should not expect another baby in 9 months. Shame on you for thinking that!

Another photo from Easter morning, featuring or lovely picture of Jesus appearing after his resurrection. I had to take the photo laying on the floor to get this shot.

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter too!!!

An Amusing Anniversary

We took the kids to an amusement park for our 12th anniversary. We had a great time! They got to ride a roller coaster for the first time. We now have 3 kids over 48 inches tall, so they can ride the scary rides. They have to talk us into going with them on some of the intimidating rides. It's fun to be a kid again, too bad I'm no longer a fearless thrill seeker. It's good to be older and wiser, but the kids sure find our cautiousness boring. At the end of the day the kids were a little sunburned and really worn out! It was totally worth he trip, we had fun and everyone got a good night's sleep!

Over the river and through the woods.......

........to grandmother's house we go. We stopped along the way to take a photo in front of a waterfall. The trip went really well until we were 5 minutes from grandma's house and the curvy roads gave the baby the pukes. It was almost 1:00 pm and the kids had been whining about lunch. The spewing episode sure did curb their appetites and they patiently waited while I cleaned up the baby. Grandma had a very nice lunch waiting for us, the kids enjoyed it, I was still a little queasy. Grandma and grandpa's house is almost finished. Isn't it beautiful!

This is the hillside view from their home.
The guest bedroom has drywall . It's coming along!
This is the master bedroom. I love high ceiling and all the light that comes in.
My husband got the chance to give his dad a football jersey for a birthday gift. He had his own football number and all the football numbers of his brothers printed on the jersey. It turned out really nice. Grandma was really excited about it too.
I just couldn't believe this! A limo ride to the river? Whatever floats your boat!
Thank you grandma and grandpa for the wonderful visit and the yummy food!

Family Room & Basement Remodel

Those of you who are addicted to HGTV, like me, may enjoy looking at our remodeling photos. Below: Inside the larger basement bedroom, looking through the new window. This room has a wood stove and a large brick hearth. We plan to decorate it "log cabin/north woods/rustic/fisherman" style. Photo below is one of the basement bedrooms. We added the window. The closet is on the right in the photo. The drywall is blue because we used water resistant drywall on the exterior walls in case dampness seeps in.Below, new pine doors to the 2 new bedrooms in the basement. We are still working on the remodel, hence, the messy room. We decided to keep the paneling in the family room for now to save money, but the bedrooms will have drywall. We are trying to have a western theme in the family room with the denim couch and red accents, but the room is also a hodge-podge of furniture we already had. Below: Before photo of the couch and cedar chest.Below: Photo taken after I reupholstered the cedar chest. I am also going to make some red pillows for the couch to tie it all together better.

In Case You Were Wondering How This Story Turned Out...

The latest on a story I blogged about in February. Here's the link http://www.ky3.com/news/local/42495442.html

And if you missed the original story, follow this link http://www.ky3.com/news/local/39424892.html

I thought the comments on the news story were pretty funny! Naked motorcyclist in the winter, only in Arkansas!!!!

What do you get when you ride your bike with 1 training wheel and no helmet???.....

I'm actually happy that this was all the damage that was done, bruises and scrapes on her face, elbow, shoulder, and knee. My darling girl took off on her bike to go to a friends house, down hill from us, without permission. She asked me a few minutes earlier to take off her remaining training wheel on her bike. One fell off on it's own, but the one left behind made it a real challenge to balance on the bike. I told her to wait until I was finished cooking dinner, then I would find the tool for the repair. She had a friend over and they took off across the yard pulling the wagon. I thought they were still giving each other wagon rides when I got the phone call....."Your daughter is over here bleeding & crying, she had a bike wreck." Her sister was with her so I said, she'll be fine, just push the bike home. "But, she's bleeding a lot!" So, I grabbed the baby & jumped in the van to go rescue her. She had not only left without permission, but also without her helmet. I was really worried that we would need to make a trip to the hospital that night. I looked her over... luckily, there was no need for stitches or a cast. She was in one piece. Thank goodness!!! Her punishment was, no more bike riding until all her wounds heal. She learned quite a lesson, that I hope she will never forget. I am glad it all turned out good, but now I am even more adamant about the helmet rule. Kids!!!!
