Grandma Liston

My sweet Grandma Liston Died. I had the chance to fly to Utah to attend the funeral. The whole weekend was very nice and I am so glad I had the chance to be with my family and see everyone and say goodbye to my Grandma.

HELEN LISTON SEARLE
Helen Norma Morgan Liston Searle 1921 ~ 2011 Helen Norma Morgan Liston Searle was born on November 2, 1921, to Joseph Albert Morgan and Ruth Hadlock in Kenilworth, Utah. She was the daughter of a migrant worker, miner, farmer and sheepherder. As the daughter of a migrant worker, Helen was raised accustomed to the rigors of hard work. At the age of three she worked with her father and family picking cotton and working in the fruit orchards in California. While in California and at the age of six her mother passed away. After her mother passed away and at the age of seven she and her family returned to Carbon County where she attended school in a one-room schoolhouse under the tutelage of her aunt, the teacher. The family later moved to Fayette, Utah, where she worked on their farm doing everything from tromping hay and riding the derrick horse to herding cows and turkeys. After graduating from Gunnison High School, she moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where she worked as a nanny and housekeeper. She later moved back to Gunnison, Utah where she worked at the Gunnison Hotel. While attending a dance in Gunnison, she met and later married her lifetime sweetheart Bud Howard Liston in Salt Lake City, Utah on June 16, 1942, while he was home on leave from the Navy. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in 1950. Her husband of 58 years preceded her in death in November of 2000. She is the mother of five children, Garry Howard Liston (Melanie Thacker), Ethel Ruth (Liston) Pyle (Jeff Pyle), Judy Kay (Liston) Reynolds (Paul Reynolds), Roger Lee Liston (Kristie Rudd), and Bryan Ross Liston (Rachel Sorensen). She is survived by 27 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild. Toward the end of World War II she joined her husband in New London, Connecticut where he was stationed until the end of the war. After the war they returned to Salt Lake City where they resided until 1954. She and her husband moved to Kearns, Utah in 1954, where they raised their family. After her family was raised, she worked for six years serving the Lord in the Jordan River Temple. Following her husband's death she moved to Payson, Utah to live with her daughter, Judy and son-in-law Paul Reynolds. Helen spent many wonderful days at the Payson Senior Center visiting with friends, painting, working with ceramics, attending dances, playing cards, playing in the band and taking trips with friends. She was very musically inclined and loved to play her organ. While attending a senior citizens' social, Helen met Max Loveless Searle. It was love at first sight, and after a short courtship they were married in July 2006. They spent four wonderful years together sharing their love and happiness. Max preceded her in death in September, 2010. Helen lived a wonderful life and was deeply loved by her family and friends. She was a very loving, caring, and kind mother and grandmother who was always concerned about her family's wellbeing. Her loving demeanor will be greatly missed. Our family extends our deepest love and respect to you mother, and we thank you for the life you gave us.

Mitchell!

Mitchell is such a great kid! I slept in this morning (one of the great benefits of having your kids get older). When I came downstairs Mitchell didn't see me but I watched him as he very kindly helped his two younger brothers get their cereal and milk. Then I looked over and saw that on his own he had laid out all his church clothes for today.

He is so kind and sweet and thoughtful and I don't acknowledge it enough.

He also got student of the month in his class this last week!
I am so proud of him!

Those Two Guys!

Yesterday I asked Grant what he learned about at church. This is our conversation

Me: Grant, what did you learn about in Primary today.
G: I learned about two guys!
Me: What two guys?
G: You know, those two guys.
Me: What guys? Who are they?
G: You know, Jesus and Heavenly Father.

He acted like everyone should know what he was talking about. He is too funny lately!

What do you want to be when you grow up?

I asked each of the kids what they want to be when they grow up. Here is what they said:

Paige: I want to marry a farmer and help him take care of the farm. I also want to teach crocheting and knitting classes.

Mitchell: I want to be a mechanical engineer and invent cool things.

Grant: I want to work with Daddy and drive tractors. (Matt took them to his work and let them drive some forklifts and tractors the other day. Grant is obsessed now!)

Harry: I want to be on WIPEOUT!

When I explained to Harry that being on Wipeout is not a job. He clearly had a plan and told me all about how he is going to win and get the 50 thousand dollars. He said that if he got money it was a job. Can't really argue there.

Mitchell's Play

Mitchell was in a play the other day at school. I took a lot of video but it is taking so long to upload that I am doing just one clip.

He did a great job and even sang a duet!

You can see it here:

Grant

Grant always says "I can't know" when he should say "I don't know." For some reason this cracks me up every time he says it. I know I should correct him but I don't want him to stop saying it!
He gives the BEST facial expressions and looks! When you ask him a silly question he will just look at you with this look that says, COME ON mom! I love all the different expressions and faces he has!

What a wonderful Christmas.

Has it come and gone already? We had such a great time the last 2 weeks. I sent the kids off to school this morning with mixed feelings. I am happy to be back into our routine, but will miss the fun and the relaxing, the eating and magic, the decorations and Matt being home so much!

Christmas Eve was spent at Mimi and Papa's house. We had a yummy dinner and then "Santa" came to visit. This is a fun tradition that Mimi insists we continue!

The kids came home to put on their PJ's and then all sleep together in Mitchell's room. Matt and I of course stayed up till past midnight wrapping gifts. That is one tradition I say every year that say I am going to change, but never seem to do!

Christmas morning we had a full house! Mimi, Papa, Nana, Papa Paul, Megan, all came to watch the kids unwrap their gifts. We ate our yummy monkey bread and had a lot of fun playing with all the toys.

At noon Matt and I took the kids down to Salvation Army to help volunteer. Every year they put on a huge lunch for those in the community who need help. We helped serve the food and then clear the plates. I am so proud of the kids and how hard they worked! Especially Paige and Mitchell. It was the highlight of the season I think. We rubbed elbows with a lot of other great volunteers and put us all in the right spirit for the rest of the day. (I wish I had photos, but forgot to take my camera!)

The rest of the day was spent relaxing and enjoying the day. We had a perfect Christmas!
