Slowing down

We've been reminded this week of the importance of slowing down and cherishing every moment we have together. We've been reminded that though many things try to distract us from what really matters, Jesus is the one we want to live for. We've been reminded to slow down once again. Family time and Christmas preparation was extra sweet this weekend as we reflected on how good our God is. Our perspective on the hurry and the worry changes so quickly when we remember that God did whatever it took to be with us. As Ann Voskamp said, "He climbed over the throne in heaven to get to you. Climb over the throne of Christmas to get to Him." By God's grace, we are making space this season. We are thankful for the gift of his presence and for the reminder to slow down.

Here are a few pictures of our slower weekend:

Oh no!

Ella is always faithful to keep her napkin in hand and loves to wipe her mouth all by herself.

Abby requested a nursing cover for each of them.

Yes that is a fireplace on our TV! :) The girls loved it. It was relaxing and played music.

Be still!

Baby Taryn

Last weekend, our dear friends the Fureys came to visit. Not only were we so excited to spend the day with them,  but I just couldn't wait to meet and hold their precious new baby girl, Taryn. Abby and Ella spent the afternoon playing with Asher. The adults had refreshing conversations and some much needed catch up time! I even got to hold Taryn for a long time while she slept in my arms. As always the night ended with us wondering why it isn't God's plan for us to live in the same zip code. Maybe someday! Friends who are family are a rare gift.

Abby and Ella both LOVED the baby and were really sweet with her.

Cookies. Crafts and the First Snowfall

This year, Christmas cookies came complete with this sweet face who won't stop climbing on everything. Have I mentioned that I'm pretty sure she might be our first child to land us in the ER? I sure hope not, but her fearlessness keeps me just jittery enough on a daily basis. She was thrilled to be big enough to help us with cookies this year.

Child, sit down in that chair before it flips over!

No way, Mom, this is way too much fun!

I was wearing mine too!

Later, when no one was looking....

cozy at home

We spent an afternoon making lots of Christmas crafts. We made Christmas trees, snowmen out of marshmallows, reindeer out of handprints, strings of lights out of fingerprints. There was paint and glitter everywhere...just the way we like it. Thank you Pinterest!

Our first snowfall was an impressive 10 inches deep. It took about an hour to get the girls all ready to go. Daddy pulled them around the block on their sled. They made a couple of snow angels and within 15 minutes were ready to come inside for some cocoa. It was short, but definitely fun.

I can't even handle this cuteness of snow pants and owl hats.

The Tale of the "Perfect" Christmas Tree

Joe made the family decision that this year would be the year we cut down our first Christmas tree. Riding a trolley out into the fields, walking around as we search for the perfect one, then enjoying donuts and cocoa afterwards. I love the idea of it. I was just more hesitant given the temperature that day and the age of our small children. I probably would have waited a year or two more and simply settled for a pre-cut mostly dead tree again this year, but I wanted to honor my husband's excitement and decision to be adventurous that morning. So, off we went.

The farm was perfect. Abby was especially excited to board the trolley! As we rode into the field, all of my doubts were momentarily gone as I soaked in the family memory we were making. I swallowed my pride and made a point to say to Joe, " YOU WERE RIGHT! Thank you for making us do this. It really is much better than picking a tree off the lot."

so excited
our tree. Please note Abby's uncomfortable positioning.
That is where the pictures end. Do you know why? Because that is where the fairy tale family morning ended. Somehow I forgot to take pictures when Abby started screaming in the middle of the tree farm that she had to go potty NOW and then proceeded to pee everywhere. Did I mention that is was freezing cold outside? So, now not only did I have a three year old complaining about it being cold as we looked for trees, but I had a three year old who was drenched in pee complaining about not being able to feel her legs because her wet legs were freezing. perfect. family. morning. The girls and I left Joe as he needed just a little more time to decide on the tree and we started to head back to the trolley. He said he would only be a few more minutes, so we stood and waited. At that point, both girls were fussy and cold. Ella was squirming in one arm and Abby was stomping her feet next to me begging to be picked up because she was "SOOOOOO COOOOOOOLD"! Another ten minutes later and here comes Daddy smiling proudly with mud stains on his jeans as he presents us with the "perfect Christmas tree".

In the moment, it took every ounce of self control not to say, "I told you so", but I'm glad I didn't. The reality is, Joe and I were both right about the day. Our girls weren't totally ready to spend an entire cold morning in the tree field. Getting a pre-cut tree probably would have been much easier and tear free, but it wouldn't have been an adventure with a story worth retelling and laughing about afterwards (once we were dry and warm of course). We did have the "perfect" memory making morning for us...even if the memory included excessive amounts of pee, a pair of forgotten mittens and no donuts.  I'm thankful for my husband who cares about making memories and who nudges us to try new things. I'm thankful for the beautifully alive Christmas tree in our living room. I'm thankful! Who needs perfect anyway?

Rockstars ready to decorate
It was a lot of fun this year to see Ella discover Christmas for the first time. Last year, she was only five months old. This year, she has been exploring and enjoying all of the sights, sounds and special things we do this time of year.  Abby has loved teaching Ella the things she knows.

Ella: (pointing to donkey and sheep excitedly) Neighhhhhh! Baaaa!

Ella picked up an ornament on her own and decided to copy what Abby was doing. Here she is hanging her very first ornament.

Abby pointing to one of her favorites.
Notice the chocolate drips all down the front of her shirt. It was a really delicious cup of hot chocolate and she enjoyed every minute of it.

starting their advent devotional with Daddy
I'm sure we will be remembering this "perfect" Christmas memory for years to come! So blessed.

Ella: 17 months

Ella: 17 months old

Loves: laughing, being chased, singing and dancing with Abby, coloring and painting, babies, Elmo (all things Sesame Street), jumping (you've been teaching yourself and perfecting your method), climbing on any/everything, praying for meals, clapping and encouraging others, snuggling (when you wake up you need at least ten minutes of snuggling before anyone can talk to you), brushing your teeth and washing your hands, playing tea party and doctor, wearing jewelry, putting on Mommy's socks, going in the car

Elmo love

Dislikes: being told no or having something taken away, not getting your way (so so opinionated!), getting your diaper changed, when someone leaves the house without you
the cutest "CHEESE" face
Daddy took you to the library story hour this month for a morning date. You reminded us that you DO love books, but DO NOT like to sit still. You spent the whole time in front of the class with the teacher moving around the entire time.

Can I just say how much we love hearing you call our names from your crib when you wake up? And how you are stringing multiple words together to make little sentences...
How you run around with blankets tucking things in to go night night...
You are such a joy!

Sick Day

What a sick day looks like in our house...
