Padded Headboard Turtorial

I've never written out a tutorial before but this one is pretty simple and a few people have asked for it so here we go!

Step 1: Measure. Measure the width of your bed and add 2 inches. Then measure from about halfway down your mattress to whatever point you want your bed height. For example my bed a queen size and is 60 inches wide (plus 2 inches =62") and I wanted a fairly tall headboard so I went with 40". Total = 40"x 62"

Step 2: Shopping!!! You will need a thick foam (I went with egg carton foam and just bought a queen bed size and cut it down) and some quilt batting and some fabric. I chose a thick and sturdy upholstery fabric but any cotton will do. Just make sure your fabric wont stretch too much because this could affect the stapling process.

Step 3: Get Wood. The wonderful men at my neighborhood Lowes helped me out, cut my wood and even loaded into my car. I used a 4ft x 8ft piece of 3/4" plywood ($6).

Step 4: Cut materials. You will want your foam piece to be exactly the dimensions of your wood. Mine was 40"x 62". You will want to cut your batting and fabric larger to account for wrapping and stapling. Safest is to add 4" in each side (so remember this when buy materials).

Step 5: Staple! SOOOO easy! Lay materials on floor with wood on top and staple. I did it in 2 parts because my fabric has a horizontal and vertical pattern so I decided to staple the batting an foam first then do fabric second so I could be sure it was lined up properly. Easiest way is to put one staple on each side in the middle to ensure that each side is correct then finish of each side pulling firmly so there is no bubbling. Then..... your done! Flip over and admire your work!

Step 6: Attaching to wall or bed. There are a couple different ways to do this. One way is to save some wood, cut out legs and attach to headboard and bed by screws. I chose to not attach it to my bed but instead attach it to the wall. I used some wall hanging velcro strips from 3M. They are fantastic! They are made to hang picture frames up to 16lbs so I got 2 packages able to hang 32lbs which this is nowhere near. I placed them on the back all over and stuck it to the wall (with hubbys help). Viola!

So easy and SOO fun to look at! Let me know if any of you decide to do this... I want to see!!

Bedroom Project #1

A few weeks ago I saw an awesome headboard/footboard set on sale. By the time I got there it was sold out. Boo. So... I decided to make one instead! I found an EASY tutorial (and when I say easy I mean EASY). I took me about an hour and a half to put cut out the materials, get the wood, and put it together and this included talking nonstop to my MIL who was here holding my baby. Well, viola! Here is the finished product.

It's a padded headboard made with plywood-egg carton foam-organic cotton quilt batting and topped with a heavy upholstery fabric. Total cost= $75

I haven't quite decided what to do with the shadow boxes yet... any ideas?? I was thinking candles for mood...

Close-up of the fabric. It's hard to tell because my camera sucks but it's gray and yellow (my two new faves together).

And this is how I found these two after I was finished fluffing the bed and taking pictures. They are so yummy.

My Big Boys

Whew! It's been almost 4 months since we became a family of 4 and we have survived! We survived the holidays, the flu, an ear infection, a new job, grocery shopping, less sleep, and much much more. We simply adore our boys, they are SO yummy! They make us smile and love more than we thought we could. Mason is growing up so fast, talking more and more each day and has become a sweet, tantrum throwing, cuddling, big brother, 2 1/2 year old. Van is getting SO BIG it hurts. My baby is not a newborn any more. He is almost 4 months, eats awesome, sleeps awesome and best of all is the smiliest, sweetest guy. Here are some recent pics of our guys.

I'm just loving on these boots and legs.

My boys just "chillin"
Mason loves to be in pictures and this is his cheese face!

Ahhh, it's the best.

Valentines day was fun this year. Mason was finally old enough that we could do an art project together and talk about Valentines day. After lunch we cut out some paper hearts, taped them all over the house on the walls and doors and Mason got to draw daddy his very own valentine. Here is another "cheese" face, although he looks like he's in pain or crying he's not.

For dinner Braden and Mason got Thai food and I made a chocolate cream pie for dessert... NO DISHES!

Love,
Braden, Amanda, Mason & Van

My First Baby

I've been watching Mason so much lately thinking how BIG he is! It is so hard for me to see him grow up but I am so happy at the little man he is turning in too. Don't get me wrong, we are in the midst of the terrible 2's but at times he is SO sweet and SO smart and I am SO proud to be his mommy. Of course I will most likely always think of him as my first baby and reminisce about times like this but I can't deny how fast he is growing!

Love you my big boy!!

This is a short photo diary of Vance's birthday! My SIL Rebecca is a great photographer did a great job! Most of you know that this was an incredible delivery for us and I am so glad I have it recorded through photos. Thank you Rebecca! If you are in the NW and are having a baby soon check her out at Mi Vida Photography.

Enjoy! There's no nudity but maybe more than some men might want to see...

Beware of Birth Story... Vance Mark Hamm

It's about time I sat down and wrote out Vance's birth story. So if you are reading this and DO NOT want to hear some gruesome details I would suggest looking at pictures only :)

I should preface this by recapping Mason's birth story so you will understand why this was an extra extra special experience for us. Mason was due on Friday August 22 and on Monday August 18 I went into labor. We had planned and prepared for a natural home birth in Provo, UT where we were living and were excited to call our midwife and get this show on the road. She came that night after 3 hours of contractions 5 minutes apart and checked me. I was 3cm. She went home to let me sleep that night because my contractions calmed down for a bit. The next morning she came back with all her gear, expecting that Tuesday would be the day. She checked me again and there had been no change. To make a long story short, my labor was looooong and painful and loooong and tiresome and did I mention looooong? Later that evening I began pushing around 8pm and my water broke shortly thereafter. After 4 hours of pushing and barely any crowning we decided (I decided) to go to the hospital to get an epidural and hopefully some sleep. We were also concerned because Mason never fully descended into the birth canal and we didn't know why. Once at the hospital and after the epidural was administered, the doctors decided that Mason wasn't coming out on his own and we proceeded with a c-section. At this point I was extremely disappointed and worn out but after about 30 minutes I heard the most beautiful sound to a mothers ears, Mason's first cry. He was so perfect and flawless and such a welcome sight! In the end, we were both healthy and happy and safe. It took me awhile to come to grips with the fact that I had worked so hard and still ended up in a c-section but now I am just grateful that competent doctors delivered me a healthy baby boy.

Fast forward 18 months and we found out we were expecting again! The question on everyones mind was was I going to have another c-section or try for a VBAC (vaginal birth after ceserean). There was no doubt in my mind I was going to try it again and work as hard as I could to deliver this baby naturally. I found an amazing doctor here in my area and he was very supportive in my decision to try for a vbac. Of course there are risks and a possibility that I could end up in a c-section again but I knew I wanted to try. After discussing my previous labor with him he said my chance of success was around 75%. Braden and I discussed it, prayed about it and felt really good with our decision. 9 months later we were gearing to welcome our baby any day and were really excited!

After a tiring pregnancy my due date was quickly approaching and I was expecting labor early since Mason was 2 days early but alas this boy would make us wait! The morning of my due date my contractions started at 12:01am exactly (Braden was timing them). After an hour of steady contractions I put on my walking shoes and iPod and went walking the halls and stairs in our apartment building. Around 2:30am I went back to bed and laid there timing my contractions until 4 am when I decided to call my doctor. Because I was a vbac he wanted me to come in right away so we call in the troops and headed off to the hospital around 5:30am. My doctor was finishing his 3rd delivery that night/morning when he came to check me around 6:30am. I was 3 cm dilated and 70% effaced and -2 station and all of a sudden my previous labor loomed in my mind. My mom and sister arrived shortly after and we began walking the halls in circles again and again for HOURS while Braden caught some zzz's in our room. After about 4 hours I was checked again and had only progressed to 4cm, 80% effaced and -1 station. It was hard to hear after all the walking. We decided to break my water and the pain was starting to get bad so I decided to get in the tub. No sooner had I sat down when my contractions started to become unbearable and became pushing contractions. The nurses told me not to push and get out of the tub. When I got back to bed they checked me and I was now 6cm in only about 30 minutes. I decided at this point to get the epidural to help with the pushing contractions since I wasn't supposed to be pushing. Mommies, have you ever had pushing contractions where they told you not to push?? Even more painful than normal! (Sidenote-normally I would have gone without pain medications since I believe it is healthier for baby and mommy but since I was a vbac my doctor advised me to consider the epidural for one reason. If I was to be rushed into a c-section during labor and didn't have an epidural they wouldn't have time to administer one and would have to put me to sleep and QUICKLY get the baby out. Also, Braden would not have allowed in the room because it would have been scary to see me asleep). So I got the epidural and was waiting for it to kick in. I realized after a few more contractions that something was wrong... there was no relief!! The epidural was spotty, numbing only my legs and uterus, not anything else and not helping the urge to push. I told the nurses that urge to push was stronger and they checked me again only 20-30 minutes after they have previously checked me and I was COMPLETE! I was in shock! What had started out as a slow labor changed so fast! Ultimately I went from 4cm-10cm in about an hour... woo hoo! The nurses called my doctor who was about 2 miles away at his clinic and told me to continue NOT to push otherwise we would have a baby before he got there! At this point in the room was my sister Jessica, Braden and my SIL Rebecca. My doctor arrived, quickly changed his clothes and I began to push. We were all so excited and nervous but I must admit I still had my doubts. I was all nerves and doubt and in pain but everyone was so supportive. Having my favorite people in the room with me was crowded but I wouldn't have had it any other way! I was pushing for about 20 minutes and seriously began to doubt that I could do it until someone said they could see his head. I didn't believe it until a nurse put a mirror where I could see and there he was! I continued to push for about another 20 minutes while looking in the mirror to see the progress and suddenly our little miracle was born at 4:04pm, 8lbs 4oz, 19.5 in long and perfect!! It was the most amazing experience of our lives! They immediately put him on my chest and he began nursing for almost 30 minutes before they finally took him to weigh and measure him and then gave him right back. We were ALL crying and laughing and I was in shock for a really long time. Needless to say I was and still am so happy with my decision. We were so supported by family and by our doctor and I couldn't have done it without them there!

Mason came by later that day to meet his little brother and could have honestly cared less! He has warmed up to the baby and now insists on giving him kisses before nap and bedtime and random hugs other times. We are adjusting to our new addition and he is the sweetest, calmest baby!

Thank you for all gifts, dinners, playdates, and love that have been sent our way! Now enough talking.... here come pictures!

These first 4 pictures were taken by my SIL Rebecca. She came specifically to photograph Vans birth and I am so glad she did! There are other pictures that I will post later when I get them!

A Post of Pictures

I don't have a lot of blogging time on my hands these days with a very energetic toddler and working part time. I cherish naptime so I can shower and clean and the rest of the time I am playing! So here are a few pictures (of course not in the right order) of our last month. We had a fantastic Christmas (haven't uploaded pics yet) with both sides of our family and a wonderful New Years celebration at home.

Sorry about the mumbo jumbo above? This is our Christmas tree! I was so excited to get one this year since we actually spent the holidays in town. In previous years when we lived in Provo we didn't get a tree since we were coming home for the 2 week break and this year we weren't! Woohoo!
Picking out our tree at a cute little tree farm near us. They were so nice!

We live near the Burke-Gilman trail in North Seattle and we take a lot of walks there. It's great because its a very clean an private trail so we can let Mason walk on his own and not worry about traffic. He has a lot of fun, even in the COLD!

I think on this day he was being semi-neglected and so he opted to just put himself down for a nap :)

My great friend Mazzei came to spend Thanksgiving with us and my family and we spent a day touring Seattle. This is a little spot mainly known only to Seattlelites, the Gumwall at Pikes Place Market. It was disgusting but really cool too. Yes, that wall is entirely covered in gum and yes, we did contribute our own!

Mason is an explorer. He loves getting into boxes, baskets, drawers, wagons, anything that he can get in and sit down, it cracks me up how cute he is!

We were super lazy parents one night so we decided to take Mason to McDonalds for some chicken nuggets, fruit and yogurt parfaits, ice cream and of course, the play place! Genius! He was so worn out from climbing the tunnels and slides he slept so well that night. The key to a good nights sleep? Wear them out!
Mason LOVES hats. It's one of his "real" words. He loves putting them on and taking them off, then putting them on again etc, you get the point. Here he is in Braden's beanie.
