Christmas Letter

I tried to get each of the kids to pick their single favorite event from this past year for this card, but I found that each of them created lists of no less than 12 all-time favorites—Cousins’ Camp, the Mormon Battalion (San Diego), any of our seemingly 4000 trips to Disneyland and finally, finding the courage to ride CALIFORNIA SCREAMIN! (Tower of Terror is still at LEAST a couple years away). They love the beach and are starting to “hit the waves”. The drive-in movies were a big hit as was our trip to Utah complete with tubing on Utah Lake and hiking the “Y”. But even after trips to Yellowstone and Sea World, they all had a twinkle in their eyes as they talked about their Mommy/Daddy dates.

Carson (8) got baptized and spent time in Cub Scouts, soccer, basketball, tennis, karate and piano. He is definitely a Mortensen-jack of all trades. He has worked very hard this year at learning all the different types of clouds. No one has ever eaten a hot fudge brownie a la mode as fast as Carson-not even Amy! He also loves going on any water ride anywhere, as long as I am there to sit in front of him. If you need someone to play a game of chess with, he’s your man.

Emma (6) loves her dance studio and also gets to sing with their choir from time to time. Her favorite is definitely having her nails painted. It should be noted that she has an odd fascination with sporks from Costco. Her proudest moment this year had to be while trick or treating dressed up as Hermione Grainger. As we were making the rounds, the kids would shy away from any house that was remotely dark or had a scary “thing” in the yard. One particular house had a single person dressed up as a monster, standing statuesque in the yard. After some coaxing we ushered the kids slowly up the driveway. When the monster turned his head and looked at Wyatt, he cut and ran! Emma however held her ground and when the monster started for her, she whipped out her wand and cast her finest spell. The monster shot backwards and ended up on his back, frozen solid. She was sooo proud. Well done my dear, well done!

Wyatt (6) spends his time with soccer, basketball, tennis and karate.  When Amy asks him to do something, he often responds, “Ay Sensai”. I was hoping that this year he would learn to not yell out his movie critiques in the theater. Oh well, maybe next year. What time is left over he likes to say things to people that are usually 100% true, and totally embarrassing. Gotta love that kid!

Owen is two and definitely acts the part. We are hoping that he is ready to be potty trained as every time he needs to go, he hides under the table. He is always finding owies that need band aids, his favorite color is pink (much to my chagrin), and he loves to have his feet tickled when he is tired. He is completely convinced that he can and should be doing everything that anyone else does. He is a little bit (grossly understated!) of a daddy’s boy which makes me super happy in the middle of the night!

Amy started teaching again this year (twice!). Her job hunt was one of the little miracles that we were blessed with this year. It is fun to see how much she loves being in the classroom with the kids. Teaching is definitely her thing. I don’t know where she gets the energy to do all she does. She is spectacular!

I spend most of my free time explaining to Wyatt why we shouldn’t do something and answering Carson’s endless trivia questions. Maybe the best part of being Dad is that I usually have a front row seat to the circus.

All of this reflection really helps make it the “Most Wonderful Time of the Year”. Looking back I am amazed at the changes and growth that we don’t always see in the day to day whirlwind. It helps us to count our blessings and recognize the miracles that happen more frequently that we notice. May you have a Merry Christmas and a wonderful new year!

Christmas...Christmas...and more Christmas

Here are some of the high points of this Christmas season:
  • Gangham Style had to be a theme over Christmas...even the Mouse King in the Nutcracker broke out his Gangham Style
  • There were some pretty sweet dance moves done by the cousins but my favorite was whenever we would get the camara out to take a picture, Tayson would start doing the Charlie Brown.
  • The kids loved playing with their cousins all throughout the week.  I loved watching them race around the patio playing Mario Kart (Tayson on the little pink tricycle)
  • Handball took front stage this year.  The cousins played it a lot and even had a massive game on Christmas Eve with Matt and the two Todd's. I think
  • We got a babysitter one night and went to see a Les Miserable.  About 15 minutes into the movie Todd leaned over and asked, "When are they going to stop singing?"
  • One of my favorite things we did was take the train out to LA to go to a museum (and wait in the longest McDonald's line EVER).  It was a blast going through the different rooms and learning about the various ecosystems.
  • We had a Grinch Dinner complete with Who Pudding, Who Hash, Grinch Punch, Sourdough Bread, and of course Todd, Todd himself carved the Roast Beast.
  • One night our family had a campout in the front room by the tree.  The plan was to watch movies until the kids fell asleep, but Todd and I fell asleep before the kids did and we finally just had to turn the movies off and tell them to go to sleep!
  • We went to the Bass Pro Shops and played with their various guns, bow and arrows, remote control cars, and rode the carousel.
  •  We went to see the Newport Beach Boat Parade.  We got great seats and saw lots of boats all lit up for Christmas.  The kids had a great time yelling at all the boats as they went by!

  • We had a fun story night with Grandma.
  • We went to see The Nutcracker. I could dance all the dances in my head as they were being danced on the stage.

  • The Todd's opened old bottles of Tubaina that Todd J. had brought home from his mission.  I think the verdict was that the expiration date was there for a reason.

  • We took our annual picture on the swing.  Our family has gotten so big (we used to all fit on the swing)!
  • We did a performance of The Nativity.  It was such a raging success that we had an encore performance for all the uncles and aunts that night after dinner.

  • The kids got Christmas pajamas.
  • And the kids didn't even wake up until 6:30 on Christmas morning!
  • Wyatt got lots of Ninjago stuff
  • Owen got a new bike

  • Carson got a whoopie cushion that he tried out on Grandma, and a red playground ball so he can play more handball, and Cole's Tread Assault which he has been wanting for over a year!
  • Emma got Sea World Trainer Barbie which she has been asking for for months, and lots of other Barbies
  • We celebrated Tucker's 9th birthday
  • Todd and Todd went to the Clippers/Nuggets game.  They got really good seats and were sitting in the 8th row!!
  • We made one final trip to Sea World before our passes expired.

Christmas Cards

These are two of my favorite cards from this Christmas. The first one is a card from Carson that he made at school, and the second is from one of the cute girls in my class at school.

Emma's Ornament

Don't you love the ornaments your kids make at school? You know, the ones with their cute picture on them, ortheir handprint.  I love looking at them each year as I put them on the tree.  Well, this year Emma came home with an ornament that was larger than life...literally. A full size sheet of paper made into a snowman covered with cotton balls.  It was HUGE.  So I kindly suggested we use it as a door hanger instead.  But no...it had to go on the tree...right smack in the middle!

Clouds

We were in the car the other day and there was a storm brewing.  It looked dark and ominous. Carson said, "Those look like cumulonimbus clouds." Wyatt said, "I think it's a supercell." Owen piped up, "No, they're rain clouds!"

I'm a Rock Star

I have been getting hoarse a lot lately so I went to the doctor. He put a scope up my nose and down my throat (a very odd experience) and found that I have nodules on my vocal chords. He assured me they weren't cancerous (I hadn't even thought of that!) and sent me to voice therapy.  I now have a microphone that I wear when I teach and my students think I look like a rock star.  If only I were that cool! I have to drink lots of water, breathe better, do relaxation exercises, practice easing into my words when I'm talking and not yell (which is proving to be very difficult!).

Christmas Train

It was many years ago when my brother and I got a train set for Christmas.  My mom sent us on a scavenger hunt around the house looking for clues ending with the train set.  It was a LGB train with an engine, two passenger cars, a flat car and enough track to let it go around the Christmas tree.  It was very exciting and still proves to be just as exciting today.  We have fun each year going to Grandma's house and playing with the train.  We now have enough track to go around the whole house, a new engine that smokes and chugs and a caboose. We recently went to Grandma's house for FHE and heard a great story about President Monson and a train set he got when he was little.  It was a great story and the kids had a blast playing with the train!

Trimming the Tree

We searched far and wide again this year for the perfect Christmas tree (at Lowe's). Though the selection was slim (like 3 trees left) we were able to find one (in our price range) and ventured home to decorate it.

It was Owen's year to put the star on the top and he did a marvelous job!  It was fast putting the ornaments on the tree this year as we had 4 eager helpers. And only one got broken.

Then we just needed to wrap a couple of presents to complete the look!

And voila...the perfect Christmas tree!

Breakfast with Santa

We had our annual Breakfast with Santa and got some great pictures of...
the kids with Santa (who Carson informed me isn't the real one because he looks funny)...

storytime with the Bishop...

...and making crafts.

Then Carson got a hold of the camera and we had pictures
like this...

and this...

and about 100 more like this!

Cookies with Grandma Paula

Grandma Paula came for a visit last weekend to help us make goodies and put boxes together to send out to our family. It was fun having her here and we got so much done!  On Sunday she made sugar cookies with the kids and they had a lot of fun together. The cookies turned out cute and yummy!

Carson's Piano Recital

After deciding that recitals aren't just for girls, we went to watch Carson perform two songs in his piano recital. He played We Three Kings and Joy to the World.  He has only taken piano lessons for 4 months and I think he's a natural.  I was so proud of him. It comes really easy to him.  He picks up a lot of songs by ear and it's hard for his piano teacher to find things that are challenging to him, but most importantly he loves it!

Snow World

We went to Sea World and had a lot of fun at Snow World.  You can't ask for better than playing in the snow with it being 75 degrees outside!
I thought it was going to be cold and rainy that day, but we ended up being a bit overdressed!

When Carson asked Santa for an iTouch, Santa said it was a pretty BIG present and wasn't sure. So he asked for Lego Ninjago as a back up.  Wyatt asked for a Ninjago set, Owen has asked for something different each time he has seen Santa. This time is was Mickey Mouse (can you ask for that at Sea World?) and Emma asked for a Sea World Trainer Barbie or a Barbie car you can ride on.

We had a snowball fight...

...went sledding

...and Emma built a snowman with a new friend!

and this is what a day of Sea World looks like when we get home!
