Good Bye Knott's

We had a great time this year at Knott's. But alas, our passes were up. So we went for one last Cowboy Fries, Boysenberry Punch, Funnel Cake, Snoopy on Ice and called it a day!

Christmas at the Beach

We usually take a trip to the beach while our cousins ar here over Christmas...but it's usually in sweats and sweatshirts. This year the weather was beautiful. Who would have thought of getting a suntan in December!

Disneyland

Hello again! We've missed you, Disneyland.

Our family got season passes for Christmas and we went the day after Christmas with the Johnson's. Fun times. My favorite picture is the one of Owen riding The Matterhorn. Afterwards he said, "I don't like you, Mommy!" and didn't forgive me for quite awhile. Star Tours wasn't much better, but he loved The Haunted Mansion!

Christmas Letter 2013

It’s time again. Amy is almost done making the Christmas cards and I can no longer put off writing the letter. Memorable family moments this year would have to include the Grunion (that didn’t) Run, the Disney Cruise to the Bahamas, 4 wheeling and Orlando (gators anyone?). Knott’s Berry Farm, camping trips, mud runs, sledding and our mega road trip to 5 National Parks were also fun family adventures. We loved the road trip and thought that Carlsbad Caverns is the coolest place ever. But sadly enough, I think that the highlight of the trip for all of the kids was either the Home Town Buffet in Las Cruces (to their defense, it was the best buffet ever!) or High School Musical 1 and 2 (playing on the hotel tv’s two consecutive nights). That one is still a little embarrassing.

Incredible news at the beginning of the year: We no longer have to buy diapers! The down side, Owen learned how to pee in a bottle during rush hour (just don’t ask Carson to hold the bottle). Yes, we use advanced potty training methods. That was an adventure! The way he says words is so cute, I almost hope it never changes. He is a happy, smiley Daddy’s boy who is as sweet as the day is long.

Emma had a very busy year. She joined a local theater company and played the part of an orphan in the play “Annie”. She had so much fun! She is now in piano lessons, continuing in dance and now wants to try basketball. She gave her first impromptu talk at Church this year. Mom and Dad totally forgot about the assignment, but it didn’t bother her one bit. She just smiled and winked at me from the front as if to say, “I’ve got this”. She then proceeded to give a 5 minute talk on being thankful. She is amazing!

Wyatt loves anything to do with the outdoors. He is particularly fond of fishing and camping and asks when we are going to go at least twice a week.. It only took him two weeks at school this year to start his first food fight in the cafeteria. Mom was not happy! He is having a great time in Karate. I know what you are thinking, should we really be encouraging Wyatt of all people to punch things? He started piano lessons a couple of months ago and he is doing really well. Next up-basketball.

Carson has come a long way this year in basketball. By the end of the year he has actually started to figure the game out. He is not a physically imposing player, but is very cerebral in his approach. He really enjoys showing off his piano skills and really has quite a talent. It is so funny to watch him grow up. He now gets self-conscious about silly things like participating in the family lip sync and dress like a cow day at Chick-Fil-A, yet is totally fine wearing gold sequins for show choir. Carson got chosen as Ranger of the Month for his class.  My favorite part was after she announced his award he said "I knew it!" really loud.

My sweetheart of 13 years now is even more amazing than the day we were married. Every year we experience a miracle regarding her work and this year was no different. She is teaching 2nd grade again at the school where she taught for 6 years and is really glad to be back. She orchestrated an awesome “What does the Fox Say” routine for our family performance at the Ward Talent show.  We had to put her singing career (and what a career it was!) on hold for a bit this year as she had surgery on her vocal chords. Not caroling with us is going to kill her!

I got to take Carson and Wyatt on their first backpacking trip this year. We went to the High Sierras with the Barnes’ boys and we had a blast. Life may never be the same (and neither will my back!). Amy also sent me to Alaska with some buddies to fulfill a lifetime dream of mine for my 40th birthday. Amazing! She insists that it was a one-time deal, but after something like that, can you really only do it once? I think that I can wear her down.

May the Lord bless you and your families! We love you and Merry Christmas!

The Rest of Christmas

We went looking at Christmas lights and gave out this award to the best house. Wyatt and Emma were very serious with their judging. They walked around with notebooks and pencils and gave each house a score.
Paula, Todd and I spent a weekend being Santa's elves. Baking and packaging goodies for 15 boxes to be shipped. It's always a lot of work, but a fun time too...and hopefully they are enjoyed.

Since the Ferry's moved (we've missed them sooo much) the Hadfields took over their gingerbread party. What a great idea to get the neighborhood families together!

We went to Bass Pro Shop. The kids had fun playing and I ran into an old friend. We took pictures with Santa, but I think the picture of Cowgirl Emma and Frontiersman Owen is my favorite!
We finally went to Mission Inn on a double date with the Barnes'. We had a lovely dinner and walked quickly through the hotel to see the lights...only to find out that was the lights. I guess we should have strolled a little slower.
Waited in line for 2 hours to take a picture with Santa.

We put on our annual Nativity play. Owen and Sophie made the cutest Mary and Joseph!
We took a boat cruise through the Huntington Harbor to see the lights. The lights were pretty cool but the homes were georgous!

We made and decorated cookies for Santa.

And we took our annual "swing picture". My how they have grown!

Christmas Eve dinner was yummy and lots of fun. We played Quelf this year. Highlights being Todd's disco dance, Kathy's flight attendant, and Mark's documentary, and Kris' golf commentary.

And of course Christmas pajamas. Brooklyn even got some, but left before the picture.

And finally...Christmas morning!

Holiday Happenings

Carson performed at Barnes and Noble with the "ShowStoppers" our school's elite show choir. He did a great job and had lots of fun.

We decorated cookies with the Barnes kids as we waited for Santa to come by.

Santa came by our neighborhood to collect toys and food on a very cold and blustery day.

We had a lot of fun wrapping presents. The kids did all their cousin presents on their own and it went relatively quickly.

We went to Grandma's for a special FHE and to play with the train. One of these days the kids will learn to be gentle with it!

Wyatt, Emma and I got to go on a field trip to The Nutcracker.

Todd and I went on a date and saw the Christmas tree being lit on our way to the movies.

We chose our tree, while the kids played hide and seek in all the trees. Not sure we'll be welcome back there next year!

We decorated our Christmas tree. Wyatt has been waiting very excitedly for this!

We had a Polar Express party at the church. Todd did a great job as the train conductor...nice mustache!

The kids had a piano recital. We were running so late we had to put gas in the van from the lawn mower can, but we made it and the kids did great!

We lit a fire and read a new Christmas book by it. It was nice and toasty (I think Todd was sweating profusely!)

We picked mistletoe in the dark, freezing cold. This is probably my favorite memory with Todd's dad so I really wanted to do it this year. Carson made sure to come prepared wearing a hat, so the mistletoe to block the effects of the mistletoe. Come to find out it has been Emma's favorite thing and she wants to talk about it for her Holiday Traditions project at school. I guess it's a good thing we braved the cold!

Grandma Paula came for a visit and made her famous sugar cookies!

We went to see The Living Nativity that the Rancho Stake puts on. It was really well done, complete with hot cocoa, cookies and a petting zoo.
