Not funny....

As we all know, kids say the darnedest things. Here we have 3 prime examples of this fact, coupled with parents who just can't resist video taping them for the benefit of everyone on YouTube. Thank goodness for these parents, or we'd never be able to enjoy precious moments like the following three videos. Hilarious all.

Goodbye Olympics

I don't know what to do with my spare time now that the Olympics are over. There's nothing quite as interesting on TV at night. There's nothing to capture my attention quite like the thrill of watching a comeback swimming race or a lightning fast sprint, and we'll have to wait another two years before we can see any more images as inspiring as this one:

No, but seriously, the Olympics are awesome. I don't really remember watching them as religiously in years past as I did this year. Even back in 2002 when they came to my front door right here in Salt Lake, I don't recall watching them as much even then. Maybe it's because I'm older and can appreciate the amazing athleticism more, or maybe it's because I just have more time on my hands. I don't know. But I do know that I'll miss watching them. This year's Summer Olympics were full of crazy world record breaking and some disappointing moments too, like when the American favorite to win in the Women's 100 meter hurdles tripped on the second-to-last one and lost the gold! Or when the Jamaican women's 4x100 relay lost because they dropped the baton. Those moments just break your heart! But the good moments really make up for it, like Shawn Johnson finally getting a gold or Michael Phelps winning the fly by 1/100th of a second. Seriously!! How crazy is that?! Anyway, it was a great few weeks and I'm sad to see them go. Until next time!

Brown Thumb

When we returned from our vacation to California on Monday night, I found my little orchid plant dead and wilted by the window. I watered it right before we left, but I guess it was just on it's last leg. It hasn't had flowers for several months, so only the green leafy part was left, but I was trying to keep it alive to see if it would re-bloom. No such luck. Just a few weeks ago one of my other house plants died too. I guess I just don't have the magic touch. I'm not playing dumb however; I know what it is that kills them. ... I forget to water them regularly! That'll do it every time. Now all I have left is my lucky bamboo (which I've been known to kill in the past, even though it's the easiest thing in the world to keep alive besides a cactus!) and my snake plant, which both seem to be doing pretty well. I'll probably replace the orchid and palm and try to start again, but I don't anticipate any better results this time around. I'll be really good at watering them for about a month or two, and then inevitably a few weeks will go by and finally I'll think, "Hey, when was the last time I watered my plants??" I don't envy our future neighbors when we are finally able to move into a house with a yard. If my skill at taking care of houseplants is any indication, I'm sure we'll be "that family" with the deadest grass on the block! Unless it has automatic sprinklers with a timer, we're doomed!

Us and Kaya

If you're wondering what our first 'family photo' will look like, this is probably pretty darn close! Here we are with my brother's new little baby girl. She's just 3 weeks old! It's been a while since either of us has held a newborn. They're so tiny! -- well, at least most of them are. I was looking at photos of me as a baby. I was HUGE! 9 lbs 9 1/2 oz. Seriously. Our baby better not even THINK about being that big!! -- (only 3 more weeks until we find out the gender!)

This photo was taken during our trip to California to visit my family. And to recap our trip, YES we did accomplish all the items on our agenda, except the whole "returning with something that resembles a tan" part. SPF 45 does a good job at preventing sunburn, but is also does a good job of preventing a tan!

"...Right back where we started from."

or at least where I started from. That's right, Rob and I are going to California tomorrow! Yippee!! We haven't been in a while. Maybe not since Christmas? That sounds about right. Well we're on our way! Or will be tomorrow morning providing we can get everything all packed up tonight.

On the agenda for our trip:

  • meet my new niece

  • Meet my soon-to-be brother-in-law, aka "my sister's boyfriend who she's going to marry."
  • Hang with the fam

  • Celebrate my nephew's 2nd birthday. (we were lucky enough to be able to make it down to celebrate his first birthday last year, so it will be fun to be there again for his second!)

  • Relax by the pool (and hopefully return with something that resembles a tan)

  • Hit up the lake if my Dad can convince enough people to go (yes, that's right, people have to be convinced! A bunch of crazies.)
  • and, time permitting, go to Pismo.

"That's why I can hardly wait..."

Oh, and I'm also going to record a song with my sister that she wrote. Sounds like fun huh! Should be a good trip!

A Bad Combination

The other night, Rob was taking up more of the bed than usual, so I was sleeping a little too close to the edge. Normally this would not be a problem, but that night we experienced a bad combination, or if you will, a series of unfortunate events that led to my downfall. Literally. It led to me falling off the bed!! Yes, that's right, I am a 5-year-old. ... So here's how it all went down, or rather, how I went down. I was sleeping close to the edge, and was about to roll over to re-adjust my sleeping position when at exactly the same moment, Rob spontaneously yelled in his sleep, something like, "HEY! WHAT'S GOING ON?!" It scared me so much that I rolled over a little too fast, and fell right off the bed! Now if we had one of those sleek and modern platform beds that are very low to the ground, this would not have been a problem. But we have quite the opposite of that. We have a wooden bed frame that sits about 9 inches off the ground, and on top of that sits a box spring and extra deep double-sided pillow top mattress. On top of that we have a 4 inch memory foam pad, which brings the total distance from bed top to floor to a whopping 35 inches! That's just one inch shy of 3 feet. So my tumble was quite unexpected, and I hit my legs on the wooden side rail of the bed frame during my decent, but other than that I escaped unscathed. Mostly just emotional damage to worry about. But the bright side is, now we have a great conversation starter at parties. It's not everyday a grown women falls off a 35 inch high bed and lives to tell about it!! :)
