Medical Checks in Korea

Every year, when I re-sign my contract, I'm required to go to the hospital for a medical check. They take a look at my height, weight, vision, and blood pressure. They take an x-ray and a sample of blood and urine. They test me for AIDS and other diseases they don't want me spreading around. They also test to make sure I haven't taken any drugs.

You have to wonder, though, how accurate the tests are when the urine samples are given in a regular ol' paper cup used for coffee in the office:

It's blurry, but that woman in the blue scrubs is drinking coffee from a paper cup.

The cups on the far right of that table/desk are samples of urine that people have just given.

The Big Test

This happened yesterday for the 3rd grade (seniors) in high school.

What that meant for me was sleeping in an extra hour and grabbing one of these:

TOFFEE NUT LATTE!!!

Umm thanks?

I walked into the 5th grade English room this morning to see which lesson to prepare for next week. The co-teacher gave me SEVEN CHOCOPIES (think Little Debbies) and followed it up with, "I like you. Not a lesbian, but I like you."

Sorry, the picture is right on my computer, but changes when I upload to the blog. I think you get the idea.

First signs of autumn

I was just thinking the other day that the leaves hadn't changed color yet. Then, as I was leaving school yesterday, I saw the first signs of autumn:

I can win!

Today, the 3rd graders and I played a "Slap Game."

Each pair of students had a set of these cards:

I would say one of their key sentences like, "The bird can fly."
The first of the partners to slap the card keeps the card. The student with the most cards at the end is the winner.

While we were playing in one of the classes, a student looked up at me and said, "Anne Teacher! I can win! It's so crazy!"

Sometimes my job is worth it.

7th Annual Firework Festival, Round 1

Last night, before I saw these:

Ignore the big pole right in the middle of it all.

I saw this:

That damn pole is everywhere!

First rainbow that I have seen in Korea. I've lived here for 2 years, 8 months and 4 days.

Peace

The best part about October in Korea?

The weather is still nice. Today it was somewhere between 70 and 75 degrees.

And the beach was nearly empty.
