Visit to Nona & Grandpa's house

We recently spent some time in Ceres, California with my family. I caravaned out with my family from Grandma's funeral (in UT), while Arthur flew home to squeeze in three days of work. Then he flew out to CA, and spent a week with us and we all drove home after a week of fun with Nona and Grandpa and lots of Aunts and Uncles. We had a blast! As always, I took way too many pictures, and couldn't narrow them down very well. Browse until you're bored.

Modesto Farmer's Market
We got some sweet delicious strawberries, and some very tasty onion-garlic roasted almonds. They were awesome.

At the Farmer's Market.
Daphne was looking at the flowers, and the man just gave her this bouquet of yellow daisies. He said it's a marketing ploy: get 'em hooked young.

Camping at Big Basin Redwoods State Park. (the oldest State Park in California.) It was BEAUTIFUL! Lots of redwood trunks to hide in for capture the flag and hide n' seek. The weather was perfect, the food was delicious, and the company couldn't have been better.

We spent a day at Manresa Beach near Santa Cruz. Since moving to Albuquerque, the beach is a novelty for us, and even though it was windy and the water was freezing, we had a great time!

Sean never actually approached the water. He spent his entire day rolling around in the sand. You wouldn't believe his bath water when we got home.

Hooray for the beach!

Dallin just trying to outrun the waves. This kept him occupied for at least an hour.

Me and Emma. She was the only one of us who successfully caught a wave. I gave up after 45 minutes of getting pummelled by the ocean. It really takes it out of you.

It was so hot there! We spent a lot of time swimming at people's houses. Here is Hayden loving the water at Grammy's house, with Nona.

Jacob, Emma, and Nathan!
You guys rock.

Grandpa took Daphne on a Grandpa/Granddaughter date to see the ballet Sleeping Beauty performed at Hughson High School, by a youth dance company. She felt very special to go with Grandpa. And they even had cheetos for a snack during intermission. :)

Daphne loves to play Polly Fashions with Aunt Emma as much as she can. One day, she played Polly Fashions with Dallin, Uncle Nathan and Uncle Jacob, and this is what happened:

I think next time, she'll just stick to playing with Aunt Emma.

Thanks for such a great time guys! We love you all and miss you already!

Canyonlands & Arches National Parks

On the way up to Utah for Grandma's funeral, we stopped at the Canyonlands, and Arches National Parks. They were well worth the time! In fact, I think we'll probably have to go again when we have more time and actually camp up there so we can do some of the longer hikes that are available.

We did a couple of hikes, 1-2 miles each, and the kids did really well. Dallin and Daphne are GREAT hikers. Sean made it half-way before he quit, and Hayden just enjoyed the ride.

It was a good time! The views were great, and the hikes were really fun because it was a lot of climbing and exploring, which is always more fun than staying on a marked trail.

They really are incredible!

Grandma Packard

My Grandmother, Alice Earl Packard, passed away June 5th. She was amazing, and we will miss her. We were able to take our family up to Utah for the funeral and it was a really spiritually uplifting time to be together with everyone, and celebrate her life of service to the Lord and to her family. She is such a great example of a life well-lived and I came away with a renewed desire to be totally committed to our Heavenly Father. Our love and prayers go out especially to Grandpa, and my mother and her siblings who will miss her most of all.

Alice Earl Packard passed away peacefully surrounded by her husband and children on June 5, 2008.  Alice was born July 9, 1932 to Kenneth Owen EArl and Vertie Ann Leavitt Earl in Bunkerville, NV.  She married Floyd L. Packard on Feb 8, 1951 in the Idaho Falls Temple, thus beginning their eternal journey together.  Alice dedicated her life to her husband, her 14 children, and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  She and her husband settled in Carlsbad, CA for 49 years where they raised all their children.  She loved her country and was influential in all 5 of her sons earning their Eagle Scout Award.  Alice loved music and passed this love on to her family.  Her compassion and determination helped her successfully raise her large family.  She possessed a beautiful smile and refreshing laugh, which always brought a twinkle to her eyes.  She was a quiet pillar of strength and supper to her husband as he served in many positions in the Church.  Together, she and her husband presided over the Florida Tallahassee Mission from 1984-1987, served as the first president and amtron of the San Diego, CA Temple from 1993-1995, and served a couples' mission to the Washington DC Visitor Center from 2001-2003.  Floyd and Alice recently moved to Highland, UT where she continued to strengthen her family.  Alice is survived by her husband of 57 years, her 14 children, 101 grandchildren, and 41 great grandchildren, and many friends.  She will be deeply missed.

Imperial Troops in the Library!

We were at the library on Saturday minding our own business when we were suddenly invaded by imperial troops! So we got some pictures with them to prove it to you. Would you believe that within the last week, I found out that two of my friends didn't know what a storm trooper is or who Bobba Fett is? Shouldn't that be a crime? Star Wars is a very integral part of our American culture. Amber and Sarah, we can still be friends, but I think you should watch Star Wars and educate yourselves in the ways of the force.

"Impressive.  Most impressive."

"Once you start down the dark path,
forever will it dominate your destiny;
consume you it will."

"Aren't you a little short for storm trooper?"

"Do not underestimate the power of the dark side."

"Help me Obi-Wan Kenobi.  You're my only hope."

"I've got a very bad feeling about this."

Here are some more great
Star Wars quotes:
(a very incomprehensive list, I know.)

Obi-Wan Kenobi: “Use the Force, Luke.”

Darth Vader: "I find your lack of faith disturbing.”

Princess Leia: “Into the garbage chute, flyboy!”

Han Solo: "Boring conversation anyway. Luke, we’re gonna have company!”

Luke: "You killed my father!"
Darth Vader: "No Luke, I am your father."
Luke:  "NOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Han Solo:  "Who's scruffy-lookin'?"

Han Solo: "Don't get excited."
Princess Leia: "Captain, being held by you isn't quite enough to get me excited."
Han Solo: "Sorry sweetheart. I haven't got time for anything else."

everybody: “May the Force be with you.”

And who can deny the wisdom of Yoda:

"Try not; Do or do not . . . there is no try."

"Fear is the path to the dark side. Fear leads to anger. Anger leads to hate. Hate leads to suffering."

"Luminous beings are we, not this crude matter."

"Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you? Hmm? Hmm? And well you should not."

Luke: "I can't believe it." Yoda: "That is why you fail."

"When 900 years you reach, look as good, you will not."

What's your favorite Star Wars Quote?

Did you know . . .

We have been learning some fun facts about Robins
from a non-fiction book we checked out at the library.

Dallin suggested checking out non-fiction books because he wanted to learn about deep sea creatures.  I figured learning was a pretty good idea.  So I checked out a book about robins since there are some living in our backyard.  And would you guess I actually learned some stuff?
  • Did you know that robins lay about three blue eggs in their nest? Ours laid four, which must imply that our robin is an above-average sort of robin.
  • Did you know that baby robins need to be fed every ten minutes during the day?  (and I thought our newborns took a lot of time!)
  • Did you know that a mom and dad robin have two families per growing season?  One batch for the spring and one batch for the summer.

Our robins have recently laid the eggs for their second family, and we were able to crawl up and get a picture of the blue eggs from on top of the tree house.  They look so cool!
