Hills at Saguaro East.
I had a severe planning failure this morning. I had 10x1' hill intervals on the schedule and I thought I'd try something new. There's a nice section of hill on the loop road in Saguaro NP East that gets steep enough, but to get there by running from the Broadway trailhead takes a bit too long. I thought I would instead drive into the park and take the loop road to the Loma Verde Trailhead. Then I could warmup on the trails, do my hills, and cool down on the trails.
What I didn't really account for was that you have to drive quite slowly on the loop road. And of course, it's a one-way road, so once you start you have to go all the way around. I realized once I got on the road that I wouldn't have time to do my whole workout. I ended up cutting it very short and maybe getting home in time for Melissa to leave for work without being late.
20 minute warmup 6x1' hills with 2' easy down (instead of 10) some tiny amount of cool down, like 7 minutes
My butts are sore from Monday but it was good to work on some ups.

There was something unusual in the air and it turns out it was moisture! Weird! Dew point 50 (!) which is quite out of the norm for this time of year. It felt like September.
Afterwards had a chat with neighbor Tanisha who asked whether we were getting a tiny home in the back yard, because she'd seen the tiny home guy's truck outside our house. The answer is, unfortunately, probably not, because it turns out most of our back yard is a utility easement and we are not allowed to build on it. This was news to me and also a bit of a shock. Sad face. We also talked about how stupidly fast people drive coming around the corner on our street, especially given the stop sign and major collector road at the other end, and that we should put it for safe streets mini-grant from the city. The tab was already open in my browser so I feel like we're halfway there.

Fun loop at Sabino Canyon to complete my scheduled one hour of running. I had thought about joining ComeRun this morning for something longer but then Lukas and Melissa surprised me with guests and a birthday party last night and I decided to sleep in again.
We've got some nasty wind today (the kids scheduled to fly today will have to wait) and the dust in the air looked like fog over the mountains. Yikes. AQI was apparently pretty high (170?) but I didn't know that until I finished. Certainly couldn't tell while running, so I wonder how accurate that was for where I was. Maybe it's just such fine stuff that I don't notice? Not necessarily a good thing.
I really enjoyed the route from the Overflow lot: Overflow - Esperero - Bear - Phoneline - Phoneline Link - Rattlesnake - Prospect. Saw some deer on the overflow trail, then spooked another on Phoneline. There was plenty of running water in Sabino Creek, enough that I jumped in to dunk my hat while on the lower bridge and that seemed to really tickle a couple of men hiking by.
I saw no snakes or lizards of unusual side while running. While driving out of the Overflow lot I saw a Gila monster on the far side of the road. I quickly stopped and jumped out to make sure it could finish crossing the road safely, only when I got to it it didn't seem like it was trying to get anywhere. Upon closer inspection it was clearly not okay. It appeared to be alive when I first got to it, but I don't think it was by the time I left. Sad.
After a short time at home we all headed to Reid Park for the No Kings Rally. Lukas got a kick out of the creative signs and has come up with some good ideas for his own.
