Christmas Eve pageant both past and present

For as long as I can remember it has always been a tradition in our family for my dad/grandpa to read from the scriptures, the story of the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ on Christmas Eve. This photo was taken in 1977 when our daughter Natalie, was an angel at the Christmas Eve Pageant at my parents home. I love how she is holding her cousin Kim's hand who was Mary and our son was Joseph who has his back to the camera. My sisters were at the Piano and leading the singing of Christmas carols...

This next photo was taken in 1978 where three of our  children were participating with their cousins.

Our son Stephen, age 6 is the shepherd standing in the back and our Scottie, age 2 is our little Wiseman down in the front with his big sister Natalie age 4 who was our precious little Mary on this Christmas Eve.
(It has been fun collecting these old photo’s for my mom  this Christmas. Some of the following is  of a post I shared last year.

“It was the Sunday before Christmas, and the counselor in the Primary ( Children’s Sunday School) presidency was talking to the children. For her lesson she brought in her nativity set. The figures were in a box on the floor, and the stable was up on the table. As she told the story of Jesus’ birth, a child was invited to come up, choose the appropriate figurine from the box and arrange it on the table.”

Now for our own Christmas Eve pageants, it is our grandchildren who are our figurines :) Our little sheep this particular night was the best baa baa-er around:)!!! We adults had to try to keep our giggles to our selves, which wasn't easy!!!) This was serious business for them.
“Probably if adults had been doing this, we would have put Baby Jesus in the middle with Mary and Joseph close by. The shepherds would have been off to one side and the wise men on the other. All the figures would have been facing forward, and it would have been aesthetically pleasing.

But that Sunday, as the last figure was placed, and the last child sat down, this is what they saw: Baby Jesus in the center, and all the other figures shoulder to shoulder in a tight circle around Him.
At first the counselor thought she would just quietly rearrange the figures as the lesson was continued, but then the thought came that there was nothing wrong with what the children had done. "In fact, she thought, "that’s exactly what it would have looked like if we had been there on that night. We wouldn’t have been able to take our eyes off of Him, and we would have inched as close as we could get." Author unknown
It also happened with our own grandchildren as they too portrayed the birth of Jesus Christ on that  sacred night, so long ago as their own Papa read the birth of Jesus Christ from the bible.

They also knew instinctively that those who had the privilege to be invited to the most significant sacred birth day in all of history, would not have worried about how they looked to the rest of the world. They would have focused all of their attention on the baby Jesus. I loved the loves and sweet kisses Baby Jesus  received at our own Pageant on Christmas Eve:)

Our family won't all be together again this year, but scattered in four different states across our country.
Our daughter and her family will be joining us in celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ this Christmas Eve.  Their four little ones are already planning what role they will play in the annual Christmas Eve Pageant.
Traditions are the glue that help bind families together and build such cherished memories! :-)

May our family and loved ones know of our love and hopefully they and each of us will welcome the Savior of the World into our hearts and into our Christmas celebrations this year.

May you and your families enjoy a very Blessed and warm Christmas filled with much love!

Simple Day Post Dec 21, 2009

Outside my window... Canadian Geese are honking as they fly over. The air is hazy we are caught in an inversion between the mountain ranges of gunky cold air, but it will soon blow out in about 12 hours when a pretty significant winter storm arrives. It will be a white Christmas.:)

I am thinking... how much I adore this time of year. I enjoy and love feeling in the air. Especially Christmas music! At Church Sunday, our Choir was fantastic as they performed the beauty of the season through celebration of spoken word and song of the birth of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
I am also thinking how rewarding it was to work Saturday at Fort Douglas along side with the USA Marines for Toys 4 Tots.

We put together Christmas bags for waiting families. The line outside was several blocks long.

The hard part for me was deciding what to put into each child’s sack. I didn't know if they liked Barbies or were into Thomas the Engine...

We were given a name, age and gender, but none of their wants! We were then to create their Christmas in a large black bag.

I actually prayed I would pick the right toys, books and games for each child and what they would enjoy on Christmas.  I will never forget that experience and the feelings I had for each child we helped.

From the learning rooms I am constantly being taught how good and generous people really are. People had donated so much both in time and money.

From the kitchen I think I just made our last batch of toffee for this year... It is for Mr B’s office and now I am getting ready to make Caramel Corn, and baking for Christmas..

I am Pleased... because I finally got to see Michael McLean's ‘ Forgotten Carols’! We arranged for over 60 of our Young Single Adults to attend. I had to buy the tickets back in October because they go so fast!!! The Forgotten Carols is one of my most favorite Christmas CDs. I love all of his songs and especially the messages they give!  I absolutely love the song ‘Mary Let Me Hold Her Baby.’ It was sang that night by Michael Mc Lean's wife, Lynne.
Marry Let me hold her Baby
She had a way with children
and she molded them like clay.
She saw the greatness in them
and she nurtured it each day.
Though she never had been married or
had children of her own,
she could make the toughest child be good.
And she would not be misunderstood,
she told her story every chance she could.
Mary let me hold her baby, her newborn son.
Though I’d never be a mother, I felt like one.
Mary let me hold her baby so she could rest.
Ever since that night
I held him... my life’s been blessed.
Those like me who can’t have children
 still can be mothers.
Something in HIS eyes convinced me
I could serve so many others.
Mary let me hold her baby, so soft and warm.
Mary let me hold her baby and I was reborn.

Isn’t it beautiful?   Another favorite is about Joseph," I am not His Father, He is mine." Michael McLean, wrote this beautiful song about Joseph... Please, take time and click on the link to listen to this beautiful song. It always brings tears to my eyes. I am sure it will also become one of your favorites too!

I am wearing ... my pajamas still!!!  I never got dressed today! Did I just admit that??? :D I did do my hair and make up! I mostly tried to play catch up and cleaned our home to get ready for Christmas... in 'cozy comfort'.

I am creating... I am putting together photo memories for family and reconstructing a set of leather albums for of scrap booked pages I did for my mom several years ago.

I am going to Idaho sometime during the Christmas Holidays to spend time with my mom and all of my living sisters and brother.

I am reading a Christmas Book, "An angel on Main Street" by Kathi Oram Peterson. It was given to me in a surprise package full of Christmas cheer by an angel herself, Shauna Trying to stay Calm. Thank You... I loved it all! It couldn't have come at a better moment:)

I am hoping with all my heart that my friend Connie and her husband Rob will be surrounded with much love this Christmas season. They are such Christlike friends. I/we love them so much. They truly are the BEST neighbors we have ever had and wonderful examples and blessings in our lives. It is their yard which is shown in so many of my own backyard pictures.
She has nursed and loved me back to health from two major surgeries in the last 5 years. She is my friend I can tell anything to and vice versa. She is a friend of my heart!
Last Sunday after church, Connie took Rob to the hospital because of a terrible headache.
They got the results back Thursday. He was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer. It is inoperable. He was given less than a year to live. He is only a little bit older than my own Mr B! Their youngest child is a senior in High School.
Heavenly Father is very much aware of Rob and sending blessings at this time to their family. What would you do without the Savior's love at a time like this?
Our hearts have been so heavy for their family. I am so glad they have an eternal marriage and the knowledge they will be together forever, someday. But oh, it is so hard!
As cars have been arriving from several states, I can't help but think of their family constantly. They are trying to create memorable and cherished moments for their family of 7 children and several grands, this Christmas...

Around the house... it looks a lot like Christmas. Neighbor gifts are ready, gifts are wrapped and the scent of pumpkin spice fills the air as Christmas carols fills the air!

Here are some pictures I am sharing because they make me smile!

Making Poppy Seed muffins with grandma during a "Bleep Over"! :D
I hope you are enjoying your week as your prepare for a wonderful Christmas!
Merry Christmas

It’s Christmas Time when our ...Almond Toffee is Ready!

Christmas time at our home means I am once again making our rich and buttery
Christmas Toffee.

I have been getting requests again this year for this recipe and even some have asked me if I would once more make some for them! So once again I am sharing this delicious recipe!:-)

This is so EASY and such a yummy Christmas treat and tradition in our family.
But Be aware! It can become addictive.
Over the years I have spun my own version. The nuts would always fall off the chocolate as it was being eaten, so I started to make the almond part of the candy it self.

Christmas Toffee

Lightly butter an electric skillet preferably or heavy pan on the stove. I usually ran one of the cubes of butter around the pan lightly, so there won't be any sugar crystals forming on the sides.
Add:
2 cups of  butter (or 1 cup margarine and 1 cup butter.  I use all butter!)
2 Tbs white corn syrup
2 cups sugar
6 tablespoons water
Combine all ingredients in an electric skillet.  When it starts to melt, stir in one direction until it turns the color of a BROWN paper bag.

While the candy is first melting, lightly use a non stick spray cooking spray on a large cookie sheet and then wipe it off with a paper towel. I know I have developed some oddities with this...just trust me! This helps the candy not be buttery or too greasy on the bottom.

Then sprinkle the sheet evenly with desired amount of sliced almonds.
Remember to stir the candy in one direction....

When the candy reaches the color of the brown paper bag pour the candy over the almonds. Spread carefully and fast.

Be carefu! The candy is really hot and I lay a kitchen towel down to protect my counter tops. Wait about 3-5 minutes. Until the candy sets up enough to wipe the candy lightly with another paper towel... to wipe any additional fat from the butter that rises to the top:) I know it sounds strange, but I have been doing it for years.

Then sprinkle with chocolate chips. We have always made it with milk chocolate until this year and my sister even likes it better with dark chocolate. Wait about 3-5 minutes and when it is soft, swirl and wait until the chocolate sets up.

Sometime the kids would get in a hurry to enjoy the first piece,  we have been known to even lay the hot pan right on the top of snow so the chocolate would set up fast, but the chocolate would turn a whitish color. So we found it is best to let it set up on its own.

When it is ready, hit the pan hard on the counter and break it into delicious morsels!

These make wonderful gifts for the office, school teachers or friends this time of year. I really hope you will try it, because if I could, I would love to make it for each one of you,

my wonderful blogging friends.
Enjoy! ...and remember to Share:)

My Father in Law fell again about 12 days ago. He rebroke his pelvis, cracked his femur and has torn both of his rotator cuffs.  He has required a lot of  care but is doing much better. He is stable again. So my time has been well spent with him and I have not been able to visit all of you.
I am so impressed and grateful for so many wonderful and charitable people who give of their time and talents at this time of year visiting our elderly at nursing homes and assisted living centers.  May Heavenly Father send them his choicest blessings. Their time, love and music are truly Heaven sent!

Merry Christmas from our home to yours!

Hello everyone!

Welcome! I am so glad you are here! I hope you didn’t slip and fall on the slick sidewalks. Mr B will  be home soon and they will be cleaned off.  Unless ... you would like to shovel some snow and burn some holiday calories! :0)

I didn’t think so...!:)
Come in and let me take your coat and show you around.
I made you some toffee when I found out you were coming.

Toffee is a tradition at our home through out the Christmas season, please help your self.
First, lets go downstairs to the family room.

Our grands all love this Christmas advent tree and eat the decorations lickety split! Then act innocent and start to giggle when I pretend and exclaim in dismay, "all the tree decorations are gone again!" :-)

This 'new' again chest holds serving dishes when we have get togethers down here.

We love Nativities... I use to collect them.
I am only using two sets this year.

Notice the little windows by the chair in the wall, it is where Mr B built a two story play house for our grands. They love poking their heads out to say hi!

My sister decorated this tree and it is perfect for this room.

The wall is not really this bright! But my camera sure won’t let it be any other color tonight. We enjoy spending time down here playing air hockey and
sometimes we work out on the tread mill.:D

Upstairs:
I got this Nativity set up in the living room soon after the arrival of our special
Pointsettia Tree
from this  very sweet man who delivered it.  (If you have time...He will warm your heart!)

This one was a gift from my mom, years ago. I love the fine details.

and it is perfect in the living room for quiet contemplation of the
'Reason for this Beautiful Season.'

In our other family room
This makes me laugh! ... when my sister saw this tree she exclaimed,
“ Oh,  Your tree looks as if it had a FRIGHT!" Thanks sis!
We ventured out of our normal mode.
We the fabulous  ' Festival of Trees'. It is where hundreds of incredible decorated trees and other lovely decorations are donated and bidded on,  to benefit  Primary Children’s Hospital.
After seeing so many designs, I decided I wanted to try something a little different with our own tree and the jury is still out on whether it was an improvement! :-)
But a fright???

The angel does seem to glow with all the clouds of ribbon around her.

Our Christmas tree is filled mostly with ornaments which hold warm memories of family, friends and Christmases past.

This sweet doll is a cherished part of Christmas each year as I explain to our grandchildren she is over 100 years old and was my own Grandmother's doll.

This gold boxes on the tree are used by our grandchildren who are Wisemen for our Christmas Eve nativity pageant.

This sweet angel was made by a friend.

I have also collected nativites for our tree.

After seeing some of your blogs last year I added more fluff to our mantle garland

with a few musical notes. I had fallen in a rut for far too many years...
Then blogging came into  my life and with it
came so many new friends with wonderful ideas.

This room is more country and has lots of red in it. Our tree is mostly burgundy and gold and went perfectly in our formal living room.
Yet we wanted the tree to be where we usually are and so I tried to incorporate the colors by adding lots of red TING TING throughout it,  so it would blend.

So we have a tree which I guess looks a bit startled.;)

I love this Noel pillow a friend gave to me... because when I see it, I see my dad’s name. Noel spells my dad’s name backwards...I miss him.
He passed away over 23 years ago and the holidays bring sweet and tender memories of him playing his harmonica as we all sang carols on Christmas Eve.

I have am enjoying all we can do with cloches.
The winter view from my kitchen window, where I love to watch our bird friends at play... while I work.:-)

Thanks for coming by.  It was so good to have you. Before you leave, I have a small gift for you. I made you some of our English Toffee for you to take on your way...

I really hope you will return soon. Please  stroll  over to Julia's at Hooked on Houses and  Rhoda’s at Southern Hospitality on  Christmas tours to enjoy lots of Christmas  blog candy.
My heart is truly warmed by all the Christmas cheer of you talented bloggers and friends who inspire me.

From our home to yours, enjoy a very MERRY CHRISTMAS!
