I get comments every now and then asking me about CD's, why I do them and how I do them. I figured I would write one post and then just link people to it. Please do feel free to email me with questions if you have any! I would love to encourage people to CD as it is much easier than you think! nickoletta100 at hotmail dot com
WHY??
If you use disposables, have you ever gone to change baby's diaper and seen little plastic looking balls on baby's bum? This happens when the diaper is wet for a while. The chemicals come to the surface and get on baby's skin. This is my #1 reason for CDing. I don't want Kacey's skin sitting in chemicals for the next 1.5 to 2 years. Disposables haven't been around forever so it's not exactly known what effect the chemicals can have but I am thinking they won't contribute to her IQ in any way. There have been studies done that have connected the chemicals in disposables to reduced sperm count in boys. As you know, I have fertility issues so this is reason alone to CD.
Trash - We used disposables for the first month and the amount of trash that generated made me ill to look at. When I took the last bag of dirty diapers out of the Dia.per Ch.amp I was so happy to know we were done.
Cheap - As of today, we have spent about $150 on CD's and what we need to CD. If we had continued to buy disposables, we would have spent at least that but most likely more by now. We have small size on some of the pocket diapers (I'll explain what those are later) so we will buy medium at some point. I expect to spend another $100 probably and that will be about all. This sure helps when you are trying to budget to be a Stay at Home Mom!
Diaper Rash - CD's generally mean less diaper rash (not for everyone though) Baby "feels" the wetness so you change diapers more often keeping them cleaner. We also use cloth wipes, eliminating the chemicals on disposable wipes that can actually cause a reaction on sensitive skin.
Cute and adorable - Have you seen a CD butt? So cute!!! You can also really get into covers and such and go crazy. Kacey even has a leopard print one! Much more style than the same old Di.sney disposables everybody else has. Now this could be a negative though as you could spend a lot of money collecting covers and special diapers! I have heard of a diaper selling for $250!
Earlier potty training - Since baby can "feel" the wetness they generally don't like it. This is supposed to help potty train them earlier. I haven't tested this out yet but it does make sense.
Downsides - There are a few negatives that I have noticed. The CD's take up more room in my diaper bag. If I don't do a load of CD laundry every other day, we run out of diapers (but on the flip side, I don't have to cut coupons or lug mountains of diapers home from the store, I just wash them.) Her cute CD butt is bigger than a disposable butt so some outfits are too tight on her and she "grew" out of some outfits overnight when we switched from disposables to CD's. When I go to change her at a restaurant or something I have to carry her wetbag with dirty diapers in it.
OK, I think that is about it on the why's. Here are some great links if you want more info:

HOW?
We waited until Kacey was 9 pounds (about a month old) so that she could fit into the small diapers. You can CD a newborn but since we were new to CDing we decided to wait.
We have built our "stash" to include the following:
25 chinese infant size prefolds (these cost about $2 each and we use them during the day)
10 indian regular size prefolds (we have not really started using these yet)
3 Snappis
2 Swaddlebees covers (these were recommended to me as best for newborn sizes)
2 Bumkins covers (so cute with the leopard print!)
1 Imse Vimse cover (this is Jamie's favorite as he says it is the easiest to get all the diaper covered with)
1 ProWrap cover (I keep this one in my diaper bag as an emergency cover)
2 FuzziBunz Pocket diapers
4 gumGenius 3.0 Pocket Diapers (these are Jamie and my favorite pockets)
30-40 or so cloth wipes (cheapie Gerber and Target washcloths)
1 small wetbag for my diaper bag
1 large wetbag for the diaper pail
pump filled with 1 cup water, 2 drops tea tree essential oil, 3 drops lavender essential oil (this is what we use to clean Kaceys bottom!)
We use the prefolds during the day. This was mainly to save money, I would love to use the bumGenius pockets all day but they cost $18 each. The prefolds (see pic) are used with the covers and a Snappi (see pic) and then a cover. I reuse the cover all day unless it gets poop on it. The pic below also shows the fold we use, it's called a bikini twist. Click

I keep all the wipes and solution next to the changing pad and the diaper pail next to that. I just got a Si.mple Huma.n trash can from Bed Bath and Be.yond as the Diaper Cha.mp does not work with CD's. I keep 4-5 prefolds, 1 cover, small wetbag, 5-8 wipes and a little 3 oz bottle of just water in my diaper bag.

The prefolds get wet, very wet. Kacey lets us know when she is wet and it can even wake her up. This is why we use pocket diapers at night. Pocket diapers have a PUL outer shell which keeps the wet inside and a flannel type inside that wicks the moisture away from baby's skin. Poop of course stays where it lands :) There is an opening between the PUL outer and the flannel inner which creates the "pocket". You stuff this with something absorbant. You can use a prefold diaper or a soaker insert. For overnight use we stuff with 2 inserts. This absorbs all of her pee and we can keep one pocket on her overnight without her waking up from feeling wet. Fortunately she does not poop overnight or we would have to change that.

Finally a word about washing. Every other day I dump the wet bag and all the diapers and wipes in the washer ands run them through a cold rinse. I do not remove the inserts from the pockets as they tend to come out on their own in the washer. I then do a hot wash using BioKleen detergent. I hang it all on the retractable clothesline outside. This saves energy and the sun bleaches out any poop stains. After they are dry I put them in the dryer for 10 minutes to "fluff" them up and make them soft.
Bottom line is that it is much easier than you think it is and totally worth it. Kacey has not had a rash and really likes getting her diaper changed. After the first time Jamie did it, he was sold and commented on how easy it was. I don't mind the washing and Kacey loves watching me hang the diapers. She likes being outside and seeing all the white I think. If I didn't have access to a washing machine I don't think I would CD though. Also, when we travel I will be using disposables.
I hope that helps and if it helps even one person decide to try to CD then it was worth typing all this out!!
You can try them for only $10 at
