I went to see the orthopedist today and he said that if I am going to have a fracture in my foot... this is the worst I can do. It's in my joint so I can't have any weight on it at all so no walking cast. The worst part? I can't put weight on it for minimum 8-12 weeks. So a cast and crutches for 8-12 weeks AND THEN 8-12 weeks of physical therapy. If I heal enough in 8 weeks to get the cast off, then I will need at least 4 weeks of physical therapy before I can walk and drive.
So a minimum of 12 weeks before I can 100% be a mom again. Before I can pick up David when he falls down and hurts himself. 12 weeks til I can put him to bed in his crib or get him out when he wakes up. 12 weeks before I can carry my sleeping Kacey from the car to the couch. 12 weeks until I can hold my daughter's hand as we cross the street.
12 WEEKS and that is being optimistic. I will be lucky to be walking at Christmas.
Yeah, I am having a hard time with this news. I almost cried in the orthopedist's office as he gave me the news. I held back tears almost all day and almost lost it when David fell down and I couldn't pick him up. He looked at me with this look that I saw as "Mommy, why won't you help me?" It was heartbreaking.
I keep trying to be positive. The fall could have been much, much worse. I could have broken my head. Oh there are a million ways I could get bad news, but for today I am taking a few minutes on this blog to feel sorry for myself.
This sucks.

A first for me...
I have always been a pretty careful and tidy person. No TomBoy here. So I have survived my 38 years without stitches or broken bones. A very nice run.... until today.
My mom and I were at my grandma's helping my uncle put a roof on a shed he was building. My mom was actually on a piece of plywood on the roof that was already nailed down and we were getting another piece of plywood into place. I was helping by being on a ladder inside the shed. I had my head poking out the rafters and was helping maneuver it into place. I must have shifted my weight and then time went into slow motion. I felt the ladder fall out from under me and I grabbed onto the rafters. It seemed like the ladder grabbed my leg and then pulled me down. It felt like I fell through jello and then I hit the floor. Not sure how I landed, if I landed on my foot or back or what. I just felt excrutiating pain in my right ankle and laid there deep breathing trying not to pass out from the pain. My uncle was there immediately and ran to get ice. When he got back he tried to get me into a chair but just hopping on my left leg hurt my right ankle sooooo bad. My grandma offered to drive me to the ER and I agreed.
So 2 hours later I found out I had a fracture and was told I would have a splint or cast for 4 weeks. No driving, no walking without crutches and no showering for now. Oh my! On Monday I need to call an orthopedist and have him see if I need a real cast as I have a splint on right now.
Jamie came up with the brilliant idea of calling his newly retired parents to see if they wanted a really great excuse to see their grandkids and they loved the idea. Hopefully they will be here in the next couple of days. I really don't know how I would do it alone during the day. I can't even figure out how to get David on the changing table to change him. Ugh. I am sure I will get used to things a bit more in a few days, right now it just seems very hard to imagine.

It's oh so quiet....
David is happily chomping away at cheerios (David doesn't like the leftover broccoli lasagna very much...)while I check the computer. Kacey is at her regular Friday night slumber party with Nana. Things have been going pretty well around here lately, please hand me a baseball bat so I can beat the crap out of some wood. Kacey decided in the last few days to be friends with David. She has been playing with him, being mommy to him, buckles him into his carseat, gets him treats, tells me to let go so he can go down the stairs by himself and she will watch him, she shut them both in her room the other day and played with him for at least 30 minutes (never heard crying, only laughing), she has tried on several occasions to make him laugh when he was crying. Oh the list goes on, it's been glorious and I really don't want it to end.
Tonight when she was getting ready to leave to go to Nana's house I asked if she wanted David to stay the night. She got very excited and said yes!!! I told her I was kidding and there was nowhere for him to sleep, she said that she and Nana would get wood and make him a crib. She almost started to cry when I told her David couldn't sleep there. :( We did compromise though and David went over there for an hour to play and that seemed to make her very happy. Mommy was very happy too as she got to sit on her butt at home and watch Project Runway!!

Come on home...
Kacey has been having a difficult time with preschool. We are working on it but that is a different post. She sometimes says she is a bit scared to go.
Last night I was going to my first PTA meeting and my mom had told Kacey I was going. So when it was time for me to leave, Kacey was begging me to stay home. Not crying or anything just asking very sincerely. When I firmly told her I had to go she said
"OK mommy, you go check it out. If it is not good you come on home."
I told her I would and then she was fine to have me leave. When I got home my mom told me that she was completely fine. We think she was just worried that I might get scared going to "school" but since i said I would come back if it was not good, that seemed to work for her.

A few videos
Here is a bit of David walking with daddy and Kacey... then he decides to crawl away and Kacey finds it hysterical!
A rare video of them playing together at our local indoor playground.
David's latest obsession is shoes. He wakes up and goes straight to the box of shoes and whines at you until you put them on. He will usually go straight to the door as you will see in the video.

A good day.
I must write about Kacey and David today. They got along. Oh my. Shout it from the rooftops.
We were at a playdate and David grabbed a grape and shoved it in his mouth. Kacey got upset and told me all about it. So I started to bite a grape in half and gave it to him. Kacey told me to stop and that she would do it. She spent the next 15 minutes biting grapes in half and feeding them to David. At one point she was trying to put them in his hand and he got upset. I explained to her that now that he is walking he is very independent and wants to do things himself. I suggested she hold them out in her hand and let him take them from her, that way he would feel like he was doing it. So she held her hand out and he smiled and took them. She was so proud!!! I was all warm and fuzzy inside watching them together. It was just such a nice change from her hitting him!

We love 3 day weekends!!!
We had a lovely weekend. Lots of relaxing and just hanging out close by. First we had to find daddy though! Kacey was able to hide him!
We (meaning David) did LOTS of walking. Now that he has decided he can walk, he is walking EVERYWHERE. He even walked across this street holding daddy's hand. They look so cute as a threesome!
On Sunday we went to Huntington Gardens and David really took off there. You couldn't stop him walking around. It was just so much fun to watch.
Yesterday we went to Gwynn's house and Beckett took to David and shadowed him around.
David is getting so big that he even got to sit at the big kids table to eat!
Kacey was worn out from the weekend by the time we left Gwynn's house. She just passed out but still wouldn't let go of this train that Dash gave her!

A Faery Hunt
Last weekend we went on a Faery Hunt. Nana Pat watched David at home so it was just Mommy, Daddy and Kacey. She was so thrilled! She got all dressed up in her best fairy outfit and off we went to Griffith Park. Kacey always managed to get herself up to the very front.

Towards the end, there was a big finale skit. Kacey started out with the rest of the kids watching.
Then she slowly made her way out...
Next thing you knew, she was standing up in the skit right next to her favorite fairy, Penelope.

I would say she loved it and it was worth every penny ($45 worth of pennies!!)

It's official!
We have a walking toddler. We went to Huntington Gardens today adn David walked ALL OVER the children's garden. He would easily take 20 or so steps before falling. At home he walks everywhere. I would say we're at about 95% waling and 5% crawling now.
In other big boy news. He has weaned himself. I was slowly trying to wean him the same way I did Kacey by timing it. We were down to nighttime, before bed only (so just once a day) and I was down to 4 minutes each side. I would reduce a minute each week. During his illness last week, he just looked at me and said "Noooo." very nicely but very firmly. I tried the other side and again he said no. So I put him to bed. I tried again the next night just in case it was illness only and again he refused. So by the third night I rocked him and he never moved toward my chest at all. It's now been 6 nights and he doesn't seem to miss it at all. I really don't think he was getting much because my boobs have not changed at all. Lucky me!

More misc pics
Thanks Dashell for my birthday train set, I am really starting to get into it now!
A week before preschool started we got to go to an ice cream social/ meet the teacher night. Kacey loved the ice cream social part. Here she is with Lilli who she will be going to school with!
Daddy and his kidlets.
A rare moment of quiet, Kacey playing by herself. This is soooooooo unusual, we had to take a picture!
My cousin Renee got engaged on her birthday weekend. 2 reasons for cake!
This is what happens when you let Uncle Mike hold David and eat cake! :)
David is VERY into brushing his teeth and runs to the bathroom whenever he hears the door open.
Eating lunch with Lorelei
More of the wedding dress pictures. This is what I could have looked like had I waited to get married after I had 2 kids!
She just LOVED the veil!
She thought it was hysterical that her "boobies" kept falling out.
Sound asleep on Renee, the wedding talk finally wore her out.
Another rare moment of them playing together.
Remember our gorgeous fairies and pirates party that Gwynn put on? Well she did a beautiful Circus train one for her son Dashell. I can't show pictures but I can show Kacey's face as she devours the cake in her mind!!
Zoned out watching tv. David lies down everywhere, all the time.

His other favorite pasttime
Brushing his teeth. Anytime he hears the bathroom door open, he goes running! He climbs up on the stepstool and begs for his toothbrush.
Getting closer!
In the last couple of days David has really started walking. He constantly walks along the walls and almost runs the length of the kitchen holding onto the walls. I would say he walks holding the walls more than crawls now. He also lets go alot and actually walks to things. Kitchen gate to the high chair, wine cabinet to the couch, and lots of letting go wherever he is and walking to me. :)
This has had a some negative consequences aside from some red bruises! For example, he falls alot more and cries a lot more, go figure. He gets alot of attention for the falling and the walking which is making Kacey jealous I think (combined with having been gone all summer, starting preschool, etc (thanks Danielle for pointing all this out!))So Kacey is acting out very badly. She is hitting him, kicking him and even bit him yesterday so hard she left a mark that is still there today. At one point he walked up to her as she was sitting on the couch and she kicked him in the face making him fall backwards. Argh!
David is also not sleeping as well. This can be due to the big new milestone of walking or the recent plague that has taken over our house... not sure but hoping everything resumes a bit of normalcy again very soon!
