Christmas in Utah

We got to spend Christmas in Utah with the Brower side of our family.  We had so much fun and loved spending so much time with everyone!  Looking back at my pictures, I realize that I really didn't take any good pictures and I didn't take any of family even though that was our purpose in being there.  I really tried to take a lot at Thanksgiving with the Gibb side and then I blew it for Christmas.

We celebrated Christmas Eve and Christmas a day early so everyone could be there without missing the other sides of their families (except us of course).  We had Christmas Eve at the Slaughter house and had a blast kazooing Christmas songs until Mitchell started the Star Wars song... then someone did Indiana Jones too.  We just can't help it I guess.  It was fun to see so many cousins and their kids we haven't seen in a very long time (and new ones we got to meet).

Now for Christmas!  Kaitlyn is walking upstairs to see her presents.

She got a rocking horse!  She really liked it at first, but soon became scared of riding it.  It makes a wonderful noise that might be trying to imitate a dying horse instead of a neighing horse.  Alta and Ellie loved making it "neigh," but Grandpa didn't love it so much.

Sadly, this is the only picture I have as proof that Kaitlyn has two cousins she had so much fun with.  Alta and Ellie aren't really paying attention to her right now, but they loved playing with her, and Kaitlyn loved them too.  It was so fun to watch.  They loved helping her walk.

Kaitlyn got so many presents that she absolutely loves, but I didn't take pictures of her with them.  Here are two bibs Grandma made for her out of Grinch fabric to match aprons that Alta and Ellie have.  So cute!  We have gotten them so dirty so many times already, thanks Mom!  Kaitlyn also got fun wooden toys and one with a hammer and balls that she played with the rest of the trip.

Kaitlyn hates her sunglasses.

Grandma got a new lense for her camera and took these very professional pictures with it while I was gone skiing.  Oh yes, I went skiing 4 wonderful days (Jeremy went 3 of those days with me).  It's so much fun to go skiing with my family.  I had so much fun and loved the first two days- perfect weather and hero snow.  I carved to my hearts content.  It had been 2 years because I was too pregnant last year.  The second two days weren't as sunny, but there was powder.  I wasn't in good enough shape to enjoy the powder as much as the hard snow, but I still had a blast.

The only weird part about skiing for me was that I left Kaitlyn for longer than I ever have.  It was hard on her too, but she got to know Grandma better and got happier every day.  She also loved playing with Alta and Ellie, so they helped some of the time too.  One of the days I came back from skiing and they were all dancing while Shalane played the piano.  Kaitlyn laughed and laughed watching Alta and Ellie dance and even tried to dance herself.

Kaitlyn loved standing up with the coffee table and playing with these little train ornaments.  She learned how to walk around the table and went around and around.  By the end of our trip, Kaitlyn could walk.  She was doing 6 or 7 steps when we got there, and one of the last days when we went to the Clubhouse to eat dinner, she walked across a big room all by herself.  I don't know when people say kids are actually walking, but I will say it was that time.  She was 9 1/2 months old.  She could take 2-4 steps at Thanksgiving at 8 1/2 months, but I don't count that as walking yet since she was basically falling the whole time.

Kaitlyn struggled eating, nursing, and sleeping, but had lots of fun anyways.  She got separation anxiety and only wanted me a lot of the time.  She loved Bennie the golden retriever and he didn't mind when she pulled his hair and hit his mouth while he was asleep.  He's a great dog for babies.  He basically ignored her most of the time except the time he licked her in the face.  She thought it was funny.

One of the nights, Jeremy and I took Kaitlyn to Temple Square to see the lights.  Nobody else came with us, but we still had fun in the cold.  I borrowed Alta and Ellie's hats for us since they forgot to take them to Provo.  Kaitlyn loved looking at the temple and would lean all the way back to see the top of the temple.  She kept doing it over and over again as seen in the next two pictures.

We had fun at the lights, but boy was it cold.  We are too used to California weather for this cold.

The traditional Brower dinner was at Deer Valley with really really good cheese.  We got to ride up and back with Kevin and Malorie which was so fun getting to talk to them one on one.

Here are some other things we did (because this is becoming my journal and I want to remember).
We met our friends, Angie Nelson and friend, and Eric Godfrey and friend at Cafe Rio for our annual Christmastime dinner/lunch.
I got to go see Heidi and Craig Johnson and their two boys (the snowstorm made it so Lindsey Patterson and family couldn't make it which was really sad).
We spent an hour with Christa and Brent Sheffield and their two girls.
All the girls (even my Grandma Meiners) went to Les Miserables.
We saw The Hobbit in 3D with Mit, Pat, Kevin and Malorie.
I got a haircut from Jessie Price and Shalane was nice enough to drive there with me.
We saw Skyfall.
The boys played lots of video games.
We ate many delicious meals that my mom made for us.
We toured Grandma and Grandpa's house with all their new remodels.  It looks great!

9 days might have been too long for Kaitlyn, but we enjoyed every minute of it.  Too bad the next two weeks were spent trying to get Kaitlyn back to normal and trusting that I wouldn't leave her every time I walked into the kitchen.  I'm sure everyone with kids already knew this, but traveling has a cost with kids.  It's a good thing it was all worth it ;)

In between holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas)

After Thanksgiving, my parents could not wait to see Kaitlyn any longer, so they came to visit.  I didn't take any pictures with them, but we took some of Kaitlyn while they were here.  We had so much fun even though the weather decided not to cooperate.  It was the most rain we have had since we have moved here.  All of our plans for outdoor fun were ruined, but we still had a great time.

On Friday, we drove up into the beautiful mountains and my Dad has an amazing ability to drive straight to nice golf courses that we didn't know were there.  On Saturday, I had previously signed up to help elementary aged girls run a 5K, so we all drove up to San Fransisco and I ran a 5K in Golden Gate Park in the rain.  Then we drove around and got a great view of the ocean and the Golden Gate Bridge.  Then we went to Fisherman's Warf and ate at Boudin's.  We had amazing fish and chips, clam chowder, and of course, Sourdough bread.  I would eat that bread every day if I could. Then because we were not full enough, we walked to Ghirardelli Square and shared a delicious ice cream sundae.  We finally had to go home and for dinner we ate more sourdough bread and some yummy cheese and fruit.

On Sunday, we went to church, and on the way home from church, we went to find my great grandpa's apartments in Menlo Park.  We found them and my Mom reminisced about the summers she spent in the apartment pool with all her cousins.  She also told us about how her Grandma used to pay her a nickle to paint the stairs.  Only now did my Mom realize that she was probably given a paintbrush and water to paint with.  We also found my Great Grandpa's old house that he built.  It still has the same ugly stained glass front doors.

I found out that this same Great Grandpa, Orion Packer, built the church building that we go to on Valparaiso Ave.  I told some ladies in Relief Society this, and they pointed me to one of the oldest ladies in our ward, June Soelberg, who can't really hear or see anymore.  I went and talked to her and she remembers him.  In fact, I couldn't remember his first name, but she knew it off the top of her head, as well as some of the names of his daughters.  She has a gift with names.  She even knew the street that he used to live on.  Amazing!

We also walked around Stanford campus to show my parents the sights.  My parents left that night and Stan, our brother-in-law came to stay the night because he had an interview here.  It was so fun to have all the family and Kaitlyn loved having family in her own territory.  She was much more relaxed than she was at Thanksgiving (and Christmas for that matter).

Now here are the Kaitlyn pictures.

After getting walked around so much in Ellensburg for Thanksgiving, Kaitlyn just wanted to walk.  She would go back and forth and smile and laugh when she was falling.  I think its crazy she thought that falling was so fun.  I guess she never actually fell without being caught.

Grandma and Grandpa Gibb sent us this Nativity and Kaitlyn loved it!  She knocked everything off and scattered the pieces until you put them back and she would do it again.

We went to Yosemite for a day after Jeremy finished finals to go cross country skiing.  Since there wasn't enough snow, we just went hiking.  Aside from the fact that Kaitlyn won't nurse in a car so she didn't get a ton to eat (only a little solid food), she was pretty happy until she got too cold.

She always wants to walk.  Especially over obstacles like big rocks.

After the first short hike, we learned a better way to keep her face warm and she was much happier after that.  We tucked some fleece pants into her shirt and she wore it like a scarf.

All bundled up... like A Christmas Story.

This coyote walked right up to our car...

At our ward Christmas party, Kaitlyn got her first picture with Santa.  She wasn't so sure about him.

We went to see the Oakland Temple all lit up.  So beautiful.  We also went to a sing along of Handel's Messiah that was fun even if we couldn't sing and we had to leave early because Kaitlyn was done.  It was probably better we went to this informal one where Kaitlyn could make a few noises without anyone getting upset.
