Just being [with] Goofy

Photobucket - Video and Image Hosting
I was going through some files on my jump drive and found this photo from 2003. That was one of my favorite trips. Both the kids were so little! Jake's feet were smaller than mine back then and Katie's hair was so long! This was the trip in which she danced with the musicians in Mexico and on Main Street in Magic Kingdom. I'll have to create a special post for that sometime.

So glad to have these memories...

Day 6 - Goodbye Magic Kingdom!

Image hosting by Photobucket
Another wonderful day spent in The Magic Kingdom! We said farewell to the castle at around 8:45 pm and headed to Epcot for the EMH. It was our last day and even though we were tired, we had to squeeze that last bit of magic out. It was a good thing we had somewhere else to go because nobody cried when we left! Well, that I know of, anyway. Someday I'll have to share the story of the night Katie cried all the way out of Magic Kingdom.

Thanks to Cris' wonderful navigation, we took a quick and scenic route to Epcot. We took the Boardwalk bus and then the ferry into the World Showcase entrance. Wow, is the
Boardwalk area really cool at night! We must go back and visit that part of the world next time.

After getting our wristbands, the group split off and our group headed to The Land to ride
Soarin'. It was a fairly long wait, but we met some interesting people including the young man with the light-up string thing-a-ma-jig that I later convinced Eddy that he needed to purchase at the Mission Space gift shop. We also met some nice folks wearing Harvard sweatshirts that Katie enjoyed talking to. Okay, who did Katie not enjoy talking to?

After Soarin', we rode Test Track. I didn't remember the place being so
bright. Maybe it was my tired eyes. It was probably around 11:00 pm at this point and we had had another full Disney day if you know what I mean. Test Track was wonderful as usual. It was really chilly out and it made the outside test seem so much more intense. I'll never forget Katie screaming out "I love feeling the wind in my hair!"

After Test Track, we had like 15 minutes left in our EMH. Could we squeeze just one more thing out of it? Sure! Jake, Emily, Ben, and I walked (and I mean literally walked) onto Mission Space at 11:56 pm! As I am watching
Gary Sinise telling me about the mission I was about to embark on, it occurred to me that I must be totally out of my mind to ride Mission Space at this hour! Well, you know what folks? It must have been the extra magic part of the Extra Magic Hour at work, because it was the best ride on Mission Space I've ever experienced. Maybe I was just too tired to care that I was spinning in a centrifuge. :)

After Mission Space, we walked what I call "The Long Walk Home" from Epcot to the Pop Century bus terminal. It felt like ten miles to my tired legs. Good thing we got a seat when the bus arrived. I think we all almost went to sleep on that quiet ride back to Pop. We were tired, but it was such a good tired...

Day 6 - Dining with Friends

We had a wonderful dinner at Liberty Tree Tavern. It was wonderful dining among friends, those we came with and the characters whom we've come to feel like we know over the past five years. This was our fourth visit here. The photo to the left is of Jake and Katie with Minnie this year. The kids have really changed since that first visit in 2001. Here they are again in 2003 and 2005.

The gang was all present and they made several trips around the restaurant. Liberty Tree Tavern is by far the best character interaction we've experienced at Disney World. We did happen to catch a first this time at LTT. We had one of the first dinner ADRs available and we got to see the characters and a guest family officially start dinner from the balcony.

Day 6 - Mystery of Space Revealed

I have mixed emotions. I am both amazed and disappointed at the same time. The mystery of Space Mountain was revealed to me while in line with my son. Yes, they turned on the lights to inspect the tracks. Of course, I had to take some pictures.

I've been riding Space Mountain since I was close to my son's age. He saw it with the lights on for the first time five years ago right before his first ride. He's almost eleven and he has seen it twice!? Is he lucky or do they just turn the lights on a lot?

It doesn't really look like much of a ride when you see it exposed. Good thing it still feels like one!

Day 6 - The Castle

Image hosting by Photobucket

They say that Cinderella's castle in Magic Kingdom is one of the most photographed objects in the world. I don't doubt it. I know that outside of my own kids, I probably have more photos of the castle than anything else. What is it about it that just beckons you to photograph it? Is it the majestic way it stands there in the hub of the kingdom? Is it the way the castle's personality changes so subtly at night with different lighting effects?

It may be something different for you or a combination of things. However, I think it is just what the castle represents that makes you want to photograph it -- memories of your childhood and those memories now being made with your own children.

Day 5 - Illuminations

Image hosting by Photobucket

After dinner at Boma's, we decided to go to Epcot to watch Illuminations. We had a great view from near the bridge between France and the U.K. Well, we had an even better view until someone came at the last minute and stood right in front of us! There are rude people even at Happiest Place on Earth. What makes someone think they can walk right up a few minutes before a show starts and expect to get the best viewing spot? That never ceases to amaze me and neither does Illuminations. Awesome show y'all!

Here are some more photos of Illuminations:

Day 5 - Boma

Image hosting by Photobucket

After a day at Animal Kingdom, it was perfectly fitting to eat at Boma's at Animal Kingdom Lodge. It was the first time some of us had eaten there and it was a treat for us all. There were a lot of exotic foods on the buffet. Man, those zebra domes were wonderful!

Day 5 - Jammin' Jungle Parade

Image hosting by Photobucket
If I had to pick my favorite parade, it would have to be the Jammin' Jungle Parade in Disney's Animal Kingdom. I love the music of this parade; it's got lots of good percussion. The stilt walkers are so amazing and usually very friendly with the kids. The best part is the colorful array of puppet animals and how the people working them really give them life.

"Bark, and howl, and screech, and roar, and stomp, and jump, and leap, and soar...."

Day 5 - The Festival of the Lion King

We went to an afternoon showing of the Festival of the Lion King. Such an incredible show!

Day 5 - Big Foot

Image hosting by Photobucket

See, they told you a big foot was in Everest! That's about all I got of the thing as we flew past him -- one of his big ol' hairy feet. It's not as scary as I thought it would be. By the time you realize that he's there, you are already past him. Dude, those are some big, hairy feet!

We were able to ride Everest several times. I guess you could say it's one of our favorites now. Disney has done a really outstanding job with this new attraction. It is one of the smoothest coasters I've been on. The only rough spot is when you get on the lift up; it kind of jerks you for a few seconds.

Here are some photos from the new Expedition Everest attraction:

Day 3 - Dinner and a Show

Image hosting by Photobucket

We finished our day at Disney-MGM Studios with dinner and a show.

Not an ordinary dinner, but dinner at one of our family's favorites, Hollywood and Vine.

Definitely not an ordinary show. It was Fantasmic! -- something that you really can't accurately describe. It's something you've got to see for yourself!

Day 3 - Hang on to the Rope!

Image hosting by Photobucket Our kids and a few others were asked to hold the rope in the Stars and Motors Car Parade. As soon as the last character, Pluto, passed, they had the kids get up and grab a place on the rope. I walked behind them and took photos all the way through the parade route.

The kids held the rope and were given instructions to follow closely behind Pluto, making sure they slowed down when he stopped to greet people. They did an awesome job. It was so neat to be in the parade and to watch the kids waving at people and smiling.

The cast member, Mary Belle, on the far left was incredible. She played ball with the kids before the parade started and was the one that picked the kids to be in the parade.

I took this photo right at the end of the parade. This was truly a magical moment for all of us, especially the kids.

Day 3 - Traditional Photos

Image hosting by Photobucket

It started so innocently; photos taken of kids on their first Disney trip. However, somewhere along the way it became a tradition for us to take our kids' photos in certain spots to see how they change. One of those places is at the fountain in Disney-MGM Studios. Here is the same pose in 2005 and 2003.

I guess our most favorite spot for photos in this park is on the crates by the boat. It's neat to see how much the kids and the crates have changed over the past six years:

Day 2 - Fantasyland, Part II

Image hosting by Photobucket

"We interrupt this blog entry to remind you of the importance of proper 3D eyewear and frequent use of hand sanitizer. Now, back to report."

After breakfast in the castle, we went back to finish up in Fantasyland. We saw Mickey's Philharmagic, It's a Small World, Peter Pan's Flight, and my first time <gasp> on The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh. Jake got to take a spin in the Teacups with Emily. Some of the kids played in the new Pooh playground which was really cute. My kids have gotten too big for Pooh now and that's just really sad.

This reminds me that so many people wait for their kids to get "old enough" to enjoy Disney World. Please don't wait if you don't have to. There are so many things for young children to enjoy. The longer you wait, the more you take a risk of it not being so magical for them. Sure, wait until they are ten or older to take them to Six Flags. But my opinion is that the perfect "Disney age" is six. If you are only going once, then a six year old is old enough to enjoy most rides, but young enough to believe in the magic. However, regardless of age, Disney has something everyone.
