We have to break out of the silos; it’s clear that the success of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will depend on effective cross-sectoral governance and institutions. That is the powerful conclusion of a new book, Thinking Beyond Sectors for Sustainable Development, launched on Wednesday by UCL Grand Challenges and the London International Development Centre (LIDC).

Biodiversity and Ecosystems

Despite the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), progress on the conversation of biodiversity has been limited and decline in biodiversity is still apparent in many regions of the world, partly due to being in conflict with other goals. At the same time, maintenance of biodiversity is a prerequisite for achieving many of the proposed SDGs. Progress has been made where biodiversity has been useful for developing new high value products and new drug leads.

Aspects of biodiversity that have not been accounted for are its buffering effect, along with ecosystem integrity, on emerging infectious diseases and its importance in growing urban areas.
