Quality Service

About two months ago, my pest control applicator (who I coordinate with for WDI inspections for my clients) passed by the back of my truck and laughed. I said "What?"
He said, "I can't get over how many ladders you carry with you!"
I said, "Why?"
He said, "Most of the other inspectors I work with only carry one little telescoping ladder, you carry 3 or 4 full size ladders!"
I said, "Of course. I never know what I might need until I get to the property. Wait, they only carry ONE small telescoping ladder? How do they inspect roofs?"
He said, "They DON'T get on the roof! They look from the ground and write it up as "inaccessible"."
I said, "WHAT! I understand that some roofs are inaccessible depending on the circumstance- wet, steep, icy, etc. But as a general rule to NOT traverse the roof (and not even having that option by not having the proper equipment) is crazy! What a disservice they are doing for their clients!"
He said, "I know!"
This exchange got me thinking about how some "service" providers are not providing a quality service for their clients at all. If I was the client and you were inspecting for me, you better believe that I will be expecting you to get on that roof!
How many thousands of dollars could potentially be spent on repairs from water damage in an area that showed no sign of water intrusion (on the inside) that could have been caught by something as simple as inspecting the roof from the top side? Of course, the inspector waived liability by noting the areas of the roof that were not inspected but that doesn't make your wallet feel any better.
So, the sweet ending to this story? He called ME to do the inspection on his personal home purchase! I was marketing my professional service and didn't even know it!
