Three weeks ago, just after all three girls had overcome an ugly virus, Brooke began rubbing her left eye. The following day, our suspicions were confirmed when she was diagnosed with conjunctivitis, more commonly known as "pink eye". Though the drops cost more than $70 for the tiniest bottle of eye drops you can imagine, we were ready to be rid of the pink eye. We sanitized our house and prayed the dreaded bug would not affect anyone else in the house. Six days later, things were looking up; all signs of pink eye were gone. One trip to church later it was back, and this time all three girls were affected.
We used up every single drop from the tiny bottle, yet it was not enough to cure all the girls. So back to the doctor we went with Keely. Another $70 later (plus the extra co-pay at the office), we were ready to knock it out.
This brings me to part two of my post. Not 12 hours after buying this bottle of eye drops, Brooke found a moment when I wasn't looking to squeeze out half of the bottle. I would estimate the damage at around $40.
Normally I would be very upset about this, but it is only one incident in a line of many. Since Brooke grew tall enough to reach counters or climb onto shelves, I am confronted with many new challenges. In the last couple of weeks I have happened upon:
-the contents of an entire bottle of Bath & Body Works body wash poured on the bathroom toilet lid (and lock) and strewn all over the bathroom floor, including bath mat.
-the contents of an entire bottle of another body wash poured on our master bathroom floor.
-honey, squeezed onto the dining room table, left to drip slowly onto the floor.
-my can of Diet Dr. Pepper, empty on its side; the liquid in a pool on the floor.
-an entire basket of headbands, hair ties, clips strewn across Brooke's bedroom floor.
-several shirts and dresses in piles on the floor, yanked from the closet rod.
-a naked matress; its comforter, fitted and flat sheets, and mattress pad in a pile on the floor.
-my Valentine roses, dismantled, in about 100 pieces on the floor.
and let's not even talk about potty training/poop issues.
She is also having trouble following directions at preschool.
The Naughty Rug no longer phases her. You would think I would know a thing or two about child rearing, but I feel lost! I am frustrated. The thing that worries me most is imagining this naughtiness times two in two years.
A couple of people have suggested books to me on the subject. I will have to find some time when I am not evading disaster to read them. I hope it gives me some suggestions. In the meantime I welcome yours!
I was so glad to be able to attend our church's ladies retreat, thanks to the support of my wonderful husband and my mother-in-law who took such great care of the kids. I am going over and over the verses I took from my weekend of worship. I have hope! May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. -Romans 15:13
Please hope and pray with me that God will show us direction in how to help Brooke in the coming days.
