5 Cents

Today Brooke had her first visit to the Emergency Room. While riding in the car, she swallowed a nickel. I didn't actually see her swallow it; I just sort of remember a nickel being there and then it wasn't, and then Brooke was crying, "My money!" It was a good thing she was crying and talking, and breathing for that matter. I told David to drive to the hospital. It felt like a very long ride but we got there, and surprisingly for Memorial Day the waiting room was empty. Brooke did great with the nurses and doctors, and she was so brave for her x-ray, only crying for Mommy but remaining still as she was instructed.
They gave us the news: There was indeed a nickel in our girl's tummy. This is actually the best scenario, because hopefully she will not need any invasive procedures. The nickel should pass on its own in a couple of days.
In the meantime we plan to introduce her to a piggy bank.

First Swim of the Season

Yesterday Brooke and I went swimming for the first time this summer. She was so excited to go. She wanted her kitty "Higgaro" to ride along, but she knew he couldn't swim with us. She held my hand as we walked in, and she asked me to carry her for part of the way. We put our beach bag down next to our shoes. I placed her tiny purple crocs on the soles of my flip flops.
When we first dipped into the indoor pool she clung to me with excited laughter. She made it clear that she did not want to get her head wet. She rode piggy back around the pool and held on to me. Joy radiated from her face, and I felt she would be happy in this moment for a long time. She looked tiny compared to all the other kids there, with her bright tutu swimsuit she had personally picked out at Walmart. As we moved from the indoor pool to the outdoor one, we stopped to share an ice cream bar. We both liked pinching off the cold chocolate shell to eat. She accidentally knocked over my drink but I didn't care. We headed into the outdoor pool and she again clung to me, a welcome reassurance to me that she is still my little girl. I promised myself that I would remember this moment forever, when she was brave enough to get in the water but still needed her mommy's presence. She practiced kicking her legs, and she marveled at the kids who were swimming.
I eventually urged her to try the splash kiddie pool. She was intrigued by one of the sprinklers, and she ventured off to play with some other kids there. I watched her, smiling, as she skipped in the water and dipped her hat in the pool. For another hour it seemed, she was having too much fun to even notice where I was sitting.
When it was finally time to go, she fought me as usual. I carried her for part of the walk back to the car, and the other part she walked. She fell asleep on the way to get the Sonic chocolate milk I had used as a bribe to get her to go. We got home and her daddy laid her down in her bed. I fell into a heap on the couch and grinned. It was a good day.

Cinderella

A few days ago, Brooke and I went to see Cinderella put on by the children's theater. I love that she is starting to enjoy things like this.

Getting ready to head out the door, Brooke in her new purple polka dot dress from Grandma.

One excited girl!

Meanwhile these two kept Daddy busy at home.

Cranky Crankertons

Man what a week! Claire and Keely have not been feeling well at all. They are having reactions to their 1 year shots complete with fevers, rashes and painful looking bumps. They have been tired and very cranky. Factor in Brooke's recent nap strike and you've got one tired mama.
I feel bad for the girls; I am so ready for them to be back to their sweet and happy selves. I can tell that they are already starting to feel better. It was good to see them get their appetite back today. They enjoyed chowing down on some frozen blueberries.

Claire

Quick shout out to Mom & Dad. Happy Anniversary today!! Love you!

Guess Who's Walking?

 ...sort of.

It's Claire! Out of nowhere Friday night she decided to take 3 steps then 4 steps in the kitchen. She is still VERY wobbly, but I have a feeling she'll be walking steady soon!

Way to go Claire!!

Thought this was a cute shot of Keely the same night, just thought I'd add. She has not yet released a comment on how she feels about walking.

3 Under 3

As of this coming Saturday, I will no longer have 3 under 3. I guess now I have 3: 3 and under, or 3 under 4. Anywho, here are some major accomplishments we have made as a family with 3 kids under 3 years old.

1. One of them is out of diapers! Woohoo!

2. All three sleep through the night!

3. My arm muscles are super strong!

4. I have come a LONG way in finding ways to put meals together instead of going out to eat.

5. I realize now that my husband is not only a wonderful daddy, he is INCREDIBLE. He gives his all to his girls (including me), without ever a complaint.

6. Brooke made it through her first year of preschool. She had some unique challenges, but she has worked hard through them and has ended the year with stellar success!

7. We made it through the first year of having twins!! Isn't that what all the passers by say: that the first year is the hardest? Well, I guess it will all be a breeze from here. ;) Ha!

8. We got to spend the year watching three of God's greatest blessings blossom. Each one of our girls brings such joy to our lives.

I don't think I ever pictured myself as someone who would have three kids in two years, but isn't it amazing how God knows what is best for you before you do? I cannot imagine my life any other way.

Strange Happenings

Hello bubble wand, plastic sea horse, and Easter stamps.

It's nice to see you again. I am not sure how you ended up here, but you must be relieved someone found you before the grill was fired up.

Hello, babies eating golfish that I did not give you. Hmm...

There are some strange things going on at our house. And I am sure this one wouldn't know anything about them.

Evolution of the Headbound

If you know Brooke at all, you know she loves her headbands. We keep a basket full of them in her room.
It all started with stretchy bands for bows back when she was a very bald baby. Rarely did you see my baby girl without some big bow or flower on her head.
When she got too old for baby bands and there was not enough hair for pigtails, I started buying her headbands. She liked wearing them because they reminded her of a princess crown. When she finally got a little hair, I tried pigtails and bows. She still preferred to wear a headband instead, or as she likes to call it, a "headbound".
It's kind of her signature at preschool. Cute short haircut (because her hair is still so slow to come in) and a headband.
Brooke has become so attached to her "headbounds", she now falls asleep wearing one most of the time. When I go in to check on her after she is asleep, that is the time that I usually give her a kiss on the forehead and take her headband off of her head.

Word has spread about her love for this accessory, and aunts and grandmas alike adorn her little head lavishly with headbands. And she couldn't be happier.

1 Year Check Up

Claire and Keely aced their one year check up! The doctor said they looked perfectly healthy! Praise God!

Doc said we shouldn't worry about them not walking yet. She was very sure they would be walking by their 15 month checkup.

I was so thankful that my sis Kelly was in town for the checkup. I did not even have to take the stroller in to the office. Thanks Kel!

Here are their stats.

Claire
Weight at birth: 4lbs 15oz (3rd percentile)
Weight at 1 year: 21lbs 15oz (55-60%)
Height at birth: 18 in (5th%)
Height at 1 year: 29 1/2 in tall (55-60%)
Head Circ at 1 year: 18 1/2 in (90-92%) Ha! Big brains like Brookie!

Keely
Weight at birth: 5lbs 7oz (5th percentile)
Weight at 1 year: 22lbs 2.5oz (65-70%)
Height at birth: 18 1/4 in (10th%)
Height at 1 year: 29 1/2 in tall (55-60%)
Head Circ at 1 year: 18 5/8 in (90-92%)

Both girls are babbling like crazy these days, and their two recognizable words much to our delight, are Dada and Mama. They continue to be such good babies, and they are in an excellent routine right now.

No more fear of the bathtub. Hooray!

Everyone is super excited about the big birthday party tomorrow. I will update soon!

Tutus & Balloons

Recently I was able to buy something that had been on my wish list for a very long time: a digital SLR camera. I have been having so much fun practicing, and my little subjects are great sports.
I have a lot to learn when it comes to photography, but I think I have found myself a really fun new hobby. :)

A Long Line of Love

The confidence I have in myself to be a great mother comes from the foundation given to me by my Mom.
I will never fully appreciate what her love has meant to me, how much her dedication has shaped me into the person I am today.
Always present, kind, selfless, sincere.
Warm, giving, respectful, humblecommitted
A deep love for the Lord.
And it is comforting to know that Mom learned all of these things from her mother, my Grandma Ree.
I have hope that I can further the tradition.
Because my daughters and I come from a long line of love.

Mom, I love you so much. You are so special to me.
I hope you can feel your heart strings tug from me today.
Happy Mothers Day.

Bye Bye Bottles

The babies have had their very last bottles! We have been slowly mixing whole milk into their formula, and the girls have been practicing with sippy straw cups.
They are doing so great with the new cups that I threw the bottles away. As soon as I threw them away I had a moment of panic. But I really think they'll do fine without the bottles. Cross your fingers the girls will transition well. Hooray for big girls! (And hooray for not buying insane amounts of expensive formula!)
