To Utah and Back Again

We had a fabulous trip to "Oo-tah," as Jane says. It would be an arduous task to try and document the trip in its entirety so I'm going to do a bullet-point list instead.

Jacob Lake and the North Rim

  • The photo opt with Jacob (the first of many)

  • Setting up the tent trailer at 1:00 AM in a day use area

  • Eating Jacob Lake Inn cookies for breakfast

  • Cape Royal and Angel’s Window

  • Watching Jane react to her first view of the Grand Canyon

  • Finding the most gorgeous primitive campsite in the Kaibab Forest

  • Sleeping in (me, not Bert) after two long nights in a row

  • Pipe Springs National Monument (we’d highly recommend this stop)

Katie and Nathan’s Home in Springville

  • Showering

  • Separate rooms

  • Homemade Enchiladas

  • Beating the Patricks every game night

  • Hiking Timp with Bert while Kate watched the kids

  • Getting thwarted in our attempt to summit Timp by treacherous snow fields

  • Eating at Beto’s and horchata

  • Running Kate’s neighborhood

  • Trying not to kill myself while running with Katie’s dog, Scarlett

  • Taking an evening walk with the Patricks

  • Café Rio and horchata

  • Tracking down a pediatrician in Provo to get Jacob’s double ear infection taken care of

Salt Lake City

  • Seeing the sites on Temple Square

  • Forgetting our camera so we don’t have any documentation except what Nathan took on his phone

  • Music and the Spoken Word

  • Running into dear friends and family

  • Picnic lunch on the lawn

  • Having Kate and Nate with us

  • Attending a “missionary” ward

  • Visiting Grandma Nichols and Jerry in Layton

  • Bert leaving his wallet in Layton
St. George and Zion’s

  • Staying with the Rebers and seeing so much of their family

  • Reber cousins everywhere

  • Jacob Hamblin’s home and another photo opt with Jacob on his saddle (don’t tell the tour guide lady)

  • Getting to know Zion’s so we’ll be pro’s for next time

  • Looking up

  • Emerald Pools hike

  • Ice cream after the Emerald Pools hike

  • The GEORGEOUS drive out, including a mile-long tunnel

  • Junior Ranger badges

    South Rim

  • Deciding to go there on a whim

  • Getting more Jacob Lake Inn Cookies

  • Racing across Navajo Bridge at Marble Canyon

  • Starbursts for anyone who beat Mom across the brigde

  • Camping at the 10X

  • Coming out on top of our National Parks Pass purchase

  • Eating a scrumptious breakfast at El Tovar with well-behaved children

  • Seeing a two California Condors (Finally! We’ve only been here half a dozen times)

  • Riding the shuttle out to Hermit’s Rest

  • Planning a hike down Hermit’s Rest

  • Packing up everything in 20 minutes or less

If you can’t tell already, we had a great time. Even though we resembled the Lampoon’s Family Vacation, we loved the tent trailer and are thinking we need one of our own. We had such a good time that 10 days of National Parks may become a yearly tradition of some sort.
