A Belated Birthday Tribute

So over a month later I'm paying tribute to my sweet Brady for his birthday!

6 years ago on August 23 2004, Brady Robert Brinkerhoff was born into our family. He arrived at a whopping 7 lbs 1 oz and surprised us right off the bat as we were 99.9% positive he was going to be a girl. When he popped out and the doctor flipped him over I was shocked to see he was a boy! Of course I was thrilled, since I didn't care either way if I had a boy or girl and little did we know at the time that Brady would continue to surprise us over the years!!!!

I knew right from the get go that Brady was a special little baby boy. In fact, the first night in the hospital I was holding him. He was awake and as I looked in his eyes I knew that he was a good one so I turned to TJ and told him! There was just something so wise in his deep dark eyes and there was a calmness in him (surprising right?) that I knew would be a blessing in our home. I was absolutely smitten with this little bundle from the moment I laid eyes on him!

Brady was a PERFECT baby. He ate well, slept well and would only cry when he was sleepy and during that 'witching hour' in the late afternoon, early evening. In fact one night TJ was taking Jackson to soccer practice so I decided I'd head out to the grocery store with Brady and Natalie. I figured he would just sleep in his bucket (baby carrier) but oh boy was I wrong! About 3/4 of the way through my shopping trip he started to wail! He would only stop crying if I was holding his bucket and that was rather difficult, as you can well imagine, seeing that I was trying to push a grocery cart, keep track of Natalie and hold a fussy baby in his carrier. Well I powered through as fast as I could and made it home. Thankfully I was able to find the humor in the situation and was telling some friends about it the next day. They suggested I get a baby bjorn to tote him around in and as it turned out one of my friends had one that she gave to me. From that day on I would strap Brady on to me during his fussy time of day. It solved the problem and made those 2 hours in the evening easy to deal with!

When Brady turned 2 we decided he needed to get rid of his soos. I thought he would have a terrible time with the loss, but he surprised us again and didn't skip a beat! When he was 2 1/2 I decided it was time to potty train him. Since he hardly spoke I figured he wasn't ready but I wanted to give it a whirl. I fully expected to have to attempt several times before he learned but he had #1 down in about 4 hours! He seriously had 7 accidents in the morning and by the afternoon he had the whole thing figured out and never had a pee pee accident again! Another surprise! It was then I realized that Brady was really very smart! And that has not changed!

Over the last few years we've realized that Brady is our kid who marches to the beat of his own drum. He is his own little dude and that quality is one of the things I love most about him!
He is wicked smart, creative, imaginative, energetic, loving, playful, and silly. He loves to build things, fix things, and take things apart just to put them back together again. He wants to know how things work or why something isn't working. Then he wants to figure out how to make the broken thing work again. This summer the DVD player in our car broke. TJ was fixing it and Brady sat to assist TJ and watched every thing he did. He even suggested some things TJ could do to make it work again!

Brady has so much energy and is, for lack of a better term, exhausting, but to know him is to love him! He lights up my life, blesses our home and brings joy to everyone who is lucky enough to know him. He truly is unique and I feel so blessed to have him as my son! 6 years later I'm still smitten with him and oh how it hurts my heart that he is getting so big so fast. But the world is his oyster, and at the risk of wishing time away, I look forward to seeing who and what Brady becomes! I love you Brady! Happy 6th Birthday!

Brady is a 6 Boy!

Brady celebrated his 6th birthday on August 23rd and for the first time EVER he had a birthday party with friends. I know that that makes me the LAMEST mom ever but that time of year is sooooooooooooo crazy with school starting and I've just never made his birthday party a priority. This year I knew that had to change so Brady invited 10 of his friends for an afternoon of bouncy house bouncing, cake and presents!

He was so cute and so super excited to party with all of his friends. Brady's a pretty enthusiastic kid as it is, but add a party to the excitement of his birthday and he was thrilled! Every present he opened he oooo'd and aaaaaah'd and he loved and enjoyed every minute of his celebration!

The Birthday Cake. We couldn't find a good cake pan for him so we just went basic. Thanks to Auntie Lindsay for helping out with frosting the cake!

Happy Birthday to You!!!

All of his friends getting ready to watch him open his presents.

The Bounce House!

When I booked the bounce house a few weeks prior to his birthday I showed him a small thumbnail picture of what the bouncy would look like. He probably looked at it for maybe 5 seconds. But later he told Uncle Colton that he was going to have a bounce house at his birthday party and that it was shaped like birthday cake, had a slide and candy canes candles on top. Colton asked me if that was really what it looked like or if that's what Brady was hoping it would look like. I told him that it was indeed what it was going to look like, but I wasn't sure if the candles were candy canes. I pulled the picture up on the internet again, and sure enough, the candles in the picture were red and white striped! I just thought it was so funny that he retained so much of the detail even though he only looked at the picture of it for a few seconds. Now, unfortunately this bouncy had blue and white candles, but I don't think Brady even really noticed!

Overall it was a fun time and I'm so glad Brady will have good memories of his first 'friend' birthday party! Along with that, he'll probably also have memories of how it took his lame mother 6 years to plan one!!!!!

Road Trip...AGAIN!

A few days after we returned home from Canada, the kids and I hopped in the car for a trip to Denver. The purpose of the trip was 4 fold, in no particular order...1. For me to attend Scentsy Convention with LouLou, Lindsay, Erin, Eve (Erin's mom) and Patty (sort of) 2. For baby Savannah's blessing 3. For Ali and Phil's wedding celebration party 4. For funsies!!!!!!

Now, to go off on a tangent, Denver is another one of my happy places. I LOVE to go and hang out with the Brink family. I love to sit outside and watch the kids play, I love the late afternoon rain showers and I love to hang out with people I love. We play games, we watch HILARIOUS family videos and we laugh, and laugh, and laugh some more. Oh yeah, and we eat!!!!!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, I feel so blessed to have married into such a wonderful family. We have so much fun together and love to be together!

So anyways, we arrived in Denver on Wed evening. After meeting baby Savannah for the first time, we ditched the kids with Uncle Matt and Papa and went to our first session of Scentsy convention. Now I'm not gonna lie to you about Scentsy Convention. It was so not my favorite thing and I really only wanted to go so I could get my free loot and get a sneak peek at the fall catalog and products. As far as the workshops and such went I really didn't have much interest in it at all. But I tagged along with my sisters and m.i.l. and ended up a fun time with all of them! And while I'm on the topic of Scentsy Convention, I owe a HUGE HUGE HUGE thank you to Matt and Papa for taking care of my kids!!!!!! It was awesome of them to spend their vacation babysitting!

Thursday morning we headed back out to convention, but Thursday night TJ flew in so he could join in on all the weekend festivities! We sent Papa and Matt and Taylor off to the airport so LouLou, Ali and Phil could go wedding party food shopping, and Lindsay, Erin, Eve and I could take the kids to McDonald's for dinner! When we all returned home from our different places we ate, chatted and Ali and Phil started a game of Monopoly with the kids!!!! Then, after all of us went to bed, Matt and TJ stayed up going through old family videos and oh boy did they find some treasures, that we all watched on Friday night after dinner at Red Robin!

Friday was another day at convention and then dinner at Red Robin (yummmmm) where we had the pleasure of seeing a lady's thong underwear due to her low cute jeans. I didn't happen to get a picture of her pretty silky undies, but Lindsay did! It was actually super funny! After dinner we headed back to the house to chat and hang and watch the awesome family video treasure that TJ and Matt had discovered the night before!

Saturday was a super busy day! The men woke up bright and early to help Lindsay and Colton pack up their truck, as they were in the middle of moving to Utah, and then over to Patty and Greg's to help set up for the party! It really didn't take very long and the backyard looked beautiful after we were finished. It was a super good thing that Erin, aka Orange County Catering was there since LouLou's friend who was supposed to help us with everything had to leave town suddenly! I'm not sure about Loulou and Ali, but I don't know that the decorations would've looked as good without Erin's talent!!!!

Now some of you may be wondering why the wedding celebration was so far out from the actual wedding, but due to the out of the ordinary circumstances surrounding the wedding, they thought it would be best to forego a formal reception and have a rockin, casual party instead. And rockin it was!!!! Super Kenn came to DeeJay so there was dancing, singing, chatting, eating, eating and eating and more dancing! The kids had so much fun and it was great to see old friends and family. Ali and Phil looked just as in love and gooey over each other as they did the day they got married and all in all it was a fantastic night.

Now onto Sunday...we woke up early to attend the blessing of Savannah Emory Smith in Lindsay and Colton's ward. Despite the happy occasion, it was a bittersweet day for them, as it was their last Sunday in their ward before moving, but Colton gave Savannah a beautiful blessing and we were grateful to have been there with everyone. Immediately following the blessing, TJ, the kids and I hopped in the car to drive home! Thankfully it was an uneventful drive home and we arrived safe and sound!

So all in all it was an action packed weekend. It was so fun to all be together though, despite the craziness of 18 people being under the same roof and despite the broken air conditioning! Thanks to LouLou and Papa for letting us come and destroy their house and for all the fun!

Now, enjoy the pictures!

Natalie holding Savannah for the first time

Colton and TJ at the party! What silly boys they are!

Who knows???? But she sure looked beautiful in the dancing dress that LouLou made for her!

I LOVE this picture of Madison! She looks so grown up and just gorgeous!

This picture just makes me laugh! I love Joshie and wish him a speedy recovery after getting his block practically knocked off in his football game yesterday!

Handsome Jackson!

Rewind

So time just keeps getting away from me and before I know it I'm waaaaaaay behind on my blogging again. Now that I've gotten all this crazy private blog stuff figured out, I'm going to rewind and finish up blogging about the summer!

CANADA TRIP--PART #6--WRAP UP!

So our trip to Canada ended with...

Adult Date Night at a golf course, overlooking the gorgeous Canadian Rockies!

Grandad, Steve, and TJ taking Annie, Spencer, Natalie, Tyler and Jackson golfing!!!! They had a blast!

Me waterskiing!!!!! Woo-Hoo!!! I must say that being able to get up on 1 ski again, after about 13 years, was one of the best feelings in the world. Of course I couldn't stay up for as long as I used to be able to, but it was still so fun!!!!! The lake was PERFECT, which is so rare. We used to have to wake up at 5:30 in the morning to get out on the glassy water, but this day the Lake Windermere gods were smiling upon us and gave us glassy water in the middle of the day!

Grandad...65 years young and he's still got it!

Canoeing down the river...so here's a little story for you...First of all, the term lake is actually false when it comes to Lake Windermere. Its actually an opening in the Columbia River (I think). So for YEARS my Dad has had a wish to canoe from where the opening of the lake, down the river about 15 km, to the town of Radium. Well this year he actually did it! And he took along TJ, Steve, Spencer, Annie, Tyler, Natalie, and Jackson. It took them about 3 hours and they had a blast! They all switched back an forth in between a canoe a Kayak and they all agreed it was so hard! Mom, Marilee, Heather and I drove and picked them up at their stopping point to bring them lunch and drive them home, and let me tell you, I have never seen A&W devoured like that before!

So there ya have it folks...another Canadian vacation wrapped up! Looking back I really can't believe how much we jammed in to 1 week...waterskiing, a birthday party for Reece, canoeing, golfing, swimming, Boo the bear! All that plus a little puking here and there, because of course most of us got the stomach flu! As I said earlier, I LOVE going 'home' and I'm so glad I have the chance to build some of the same memories with my kids that I had growing up!

BRILLIANT IDEA!

So in light of all this going private on my blog business, my brilliant cousin McKenna suggested that I create a new blog that tells you all when this blog has been updated!

So my new blog address is www.brinks-blog-update.blogspot.com.

Put the new address in your google reader and I'll post on that blog when I've done a new post on my private blog. I'll put a link to my private blog on my 'update' blog so you can link directly to and from the 2 blogs! Does that make sense?????

Thanks for all your patience with all of this. Its a crazy world out there and I just feel like I need to have control over who looks at my life!!!!

And again, if you look at my blog and want to be added to my list, let me know through a comment or an email to juliebean5@yahoo.com. I'm going to leave it open through the weekend and will go private on Monday morning!!!!!

From Jackson to J.B.

Jackson--6 months old

Let's just start by saying this baby picture of Jackson makes me laugh but it really hurts my heart! He is so fat and so cute and oh my...time goes so fast! Seriously people...just felt and heard my heart break!

Okay, enough of the nostalgia...I decided I needed to blog about the transition of Jackson's name, since some of you who aren't around us a ton might be wondering. And if you're not wondering then its just good for posterity purposes!

Almost 11 years ago I gave birth to a son who TJ and I decided to name Jackson McBride. He remained Jackson, or Jack, or Jack-o-beans up until about 2 years ago when we moved to Utah.
In the late summer of 2008, Jackson was put on a football team with another Jackson and a Jack. His coach, to avoid any confusion, dubbed my Jackson, J.B, the other Jackson, J.T. and the Jack remained Jack. Needless to say J.B. stuck and the rest is history!

Now, I have mixed feelings about the impromptu name change of my child. I don't think his coach intended the initial name to stick in every facet of Jackson's life so I certainly don't blame him, but it did. His friends were all on his football team so they would call him J.B. at school and when they phoned the house. Then TJ started using it outside of football/basketball practice, then his teachers at school. It was really surprising to me when one day I was using his real name to get his attention and he wasn't answering me. When I said 'J.B.' he responded! That's when I knew the name I chose for him was no longer what he went by! It was a little bittersweet for me. I don't hate 'J.B.' but at the same time its not what I named him, yet I find myself calling him 'J.B.' and referring to him as such on the blog, because let's be honest, its easier to type!

Bottom line, his name is Jackson and I try to call him that as often as possible, but in reality most of the people in his life call him J.B. and even I have picked it up! I certainly don't mind if you choose to call him J.B. but if you still want to call him Jackson or Jack or Jack-O-Beans, please do!

J.B.

As a side note, his teacher asked him what he wanted to go by this year in school and he told her 'Jackson'. Now we have a bet going to see if she'll pick up J.B. by the end of the year because his teacher last year did!!!!!

Natalie's Braces

Yep! You read that right! My Natalie Rae got braces a few weeks ago! She'll only have them on for about 5 months and then again when she's a teenager. She was very excited to get them, but that lasted about 4 hours and then they started to hurt! But she was a trooper, and we had Advil handy so she got through those first 2 days like a CHAMP! Besides that, our orthodontist is AWESOME and he gives all his patients who get braces a free smoothie from Roxberry! Seriously, if you live near me and you're looking for an Orthodontist click here!

Anyways, back to my cute Natalie. So these pictures were taken a day apart and you can already see how much her teeth moved! CRAZY!

You can see the toll the pain took on her. She didn't sleep well and was super tearful! I know anyone who's had braces can remember how absolutely exhausting it is to be in that kind of pain for 2 days straight.

So in a few months I'll post the results of round #1 of braces.

Back to School, Back to Reality!

Well here we all are, yet again...back to school time! We had such a fun summer that just FLEW by, so sending the kids back to school was bittersweet for me! I could've used another week with my chickens home but since by law I have to educate them somehow I sent them off to their institution of learning!

J.B. and Natalie started a week ago, Reece started pre-school yesterday and Brady started Kindergarten today! So far they've all been pleased with their teachers and have had an easy transition so enjoy the pictures!

I swear J.B. poses the same way every year!

Me and my big Jack who is measuring in at 5 ft 3.5 inches

Beautiful Girl Nanny Rae!

Me and my girl. She's such a sweetie and is growing up way too fast!

Brady Robert...oh, how I love him! He was so excited about his handsome new shirt and didn't want to mess it up or wrinkle it at all!!!! So so so cute!

Playing on the playground that is reserved for the Kindergarteners! And oh boy what a difference from last year. He didn't even look back once I told him to go play!

How is it possible that Reecey is old enough for pre-school? WHAT???

I thought it was hilarious that her 'pack-pack' is as big as her!

Now onto the issue of my blog going private...turns out I can only email 10 people that I've posted, so if you don't get emails that I've updated once I go private, please keep looking. Hopefully blogger will change that and I'll be able to email everyone at some point!

And last, but certainly not least, a story for all of you out there who have sent your little kids off to school! My sister-in-law posted this on her blog last year when her daughter started Kindergarten and I just have to put it on mine. Its so sweet and even though I've read it about 20 times I still cry!!!!!!

Once upon a time there was a little boy named Jack who was about to climb his very first beanstalk. He had a fresh haircut and a brand new book bag.

Even though his friends in the neighborhood had climbed this same beanstalk almost every day last year, this was Jack's first day and he was a little nervous. So was his mother.

Early in the morning she brought him to the foot of the beanstalk. She talked encouragingly to Jack about all the fun he would have that day and how nice his giant would be. She reassured him that she would be back to pick him up at the end of the day. For a moment they stood together, silently holding hands, gazing up at the beanstalk. To Jack it seemed much bigger than it had when his mother had pointed it out on the way to the store last week. His mother thought it looked big too. She swallowed. Maybe she should have held Jack out a year....

Jack's mother straighted his shirt one last time, patted his shoulder and smiled down at him. She promised to stay and wave while he started climbing. Jack didn't say a word.

He walked forward, grabbed a low growing stem and slowly pulled himself up to the first leaf. He balanced there for a moment and then climbed more eagerly to the second leaf, then to the third and soon he had vanished into a high tangle of leaves and stems with never a backward glance at his mother.

She stood alone at the bottom of the beanstalk, gazing up at the spot where Jack had disappeared. There was no rustle, no movement, no sound to indicate that he was anywhere inside.

"Sometimes," she thought, "it's harder to be the one who waves good-bye than it is to be the one who climbs the beanstalk."

She wondered how Jack would do. Would he miss her? How would he behave? Did his giant understand that little boys sometimes acted silly when they felt unsure? She fought down an urge to spring up the stalk after Jack & maybe duck behind a bean to take a peek at how he was doing.

"I'd better not. What if he saw me?" She knew Jack was old enoguh to handle this on his own. She reminded herself that, after all this was thought to be an excellent beanstalk and that everyone said his giant was not only kind but had outstanding qualifications.

"It's not so much that I'm worried about him," she thought, rubbing the back of her neck. "It's just that he's growing up and I'm going to miss him."

Jack's mother turned to leave. "Jack's going to have lots of bigger beanstalks to climb in his life," she told herself. "Today's the day he started practicing for them....And today's the day I start practicing something too: cheering him on and waving good-bye."
