The Lion City

Ya know the term, 'fish out of water?'  Well, that's exactly how I feel now that I live in Singapore. I know we have only been here for 5 days, but I don't feel as if I have any kind of grasp on what we have gotten ourselves into.  Everything is just so different. I am sure things will become more familiar as the days go on...but right now, it is difficult to think that I will figure things out.  I know there is a learning curve with any change in life.   I just need to stay positive that I will figure this one out, right?

Currently, we live in corporate housing until the end of the month.  After that, we need to move into our own apartment.  I have seen 16 apartments since we have been here - two of which I love.  Both are good locations - fairly close to Brett's work, good shopping nearby, close to MRT station or a free shuttle, and they are both a good size.  Here is my dilemma: dishwashers and ovens are not common here.  Most places don't have a dishwasher...and many places come with a microwave/convection oven combination to cook your food in.  This microwave/convection oven is small...like the size of a microwave.  Who can cook a roast...or cookies...or chicken in a microwave sized oven?!?!

Sorry, I got a little carried away there...Anyway, one of the apartments I love has a dishwasher...and a microwave/convection oven.  The other apartment I love has no dishwasher but a more regular sized oven (still not as big as in the states...think small NY apartment size). So, which do I choose?  Do I want a dishwasher? (note - I hate doing dishes by hand) OR do I want a semi normal sized oven? (note - I will have to buy all new cookie sheets, pans, etc...because mine are all too large for it)  Which would you choose?

Of course, there are other perks to each of the apartments...but I just can't get over the idea that I have to choose between having a bite-sized oven or having a dishwasher.  The corporate housing we are in now only has a microwave/convection oven.  Perhaps I should try and cook something in it and decide from there.  Does anyone know how to cook in a convection oven?  Am I worrying over nothing?

Other than the apartment hunting, I have been trying to explore the city and adjust to the insane heat and humidity.  I definitely miss the SoCal weather right now.  The people here are extremely nice, (minus the cab drivers) and Brett likes working in his new office.  We are slowly adjusting to the time difference, and I think we will like it here.  We get to go to our new ward today...wish us luck!

Singapore

So...it's official...we are moving to Singapore April 1st.  Wow.  I am still in crazy shock about this.  I mean, I was just barely getting used to the idea of moving to Texas in June...and now, I am in a state of complete shock all over again. I have no idea how to move half way across the world, but I have already started making a list of all the things I need to buy in bulk before we leave.  The top of that list is hair dye.  I am sure other things will jump to the top at some point, but right now that is my number one concern.

Brett and I have received an enormous amount of support from all of our friends and family about this move...my boss, on the other hand, wasn't as thrilled and hasn't been nice to me since I told her, but that's a whole other story.  Anyway, when Brett first told me we could possibly move to Singapore, I cried...for like an entire day...and then I cried some more.  I guess you could say I was being a bit dramatic in the moment. But, to me, the idea of moving to Singapore was extremely scary.  I didn't even know where it was, what language they spoke there, climate, how often we could come home, the list goes on and on.  Luckily, my wonderful husband was able to calm me down and we researched it together.

Here is a little information about where we are moving: Singapore is located in Malaysia and is comprised of somewhere around 60 islands.  They speak English, Malay, Tamil and Chinese.  The population is about 5 million people, and transportation on the island is supposed to be great.  The climate is a bit hot...temperatures range from about 71-94 degrees and it is crazy humid.  Like incredibly humid...I am not going to like that part.  The list goes on and on...

Researching helped me be more open to the idea of Singapore, along with the fact that this move is only temporary...we should only be there for 2-3 years, and the company will pay to fly us home twice a year.  I only see my parents once a year now, so that will actually be an improvement!

I am excited for our new adventure, and will hopefully be able to share our ups and downs on here.
