Willy’s Wonderful World (Bel) live (Gooik, Bel, 87-05-30)

Standard

Not really a punk band but did a few gigs in the punk-scene. Their music could be labeled garagerock. The members of the band were ‘Billy’ Lieven Vanoverbeke (guitar; ex ‘No Numbers’), Piet Vanoost (drums, R.I.P. 1988), Wim Albers (bass) and Lieven Deschuyter (vocals/guitar). They were from Deinze/Tielt area.

L => R: Wim – Piet – Lieven V. – Lieven D.

The recordings here were made at a concert in ‘De Vrede’ in Gooik (near Brussels), where they played with ‘X-Creta’ & ‘Deviant Gedrag’; May 30th, 1987. A contribution by ‘Deviant Gedrag’ guitarist ‘Izzy’ Isidoor Holvoet. Other concerts the band played: 86-12-26 ‘Mouterij’, Deinze; 87-08-30 ‘De Kronkel’, Wingene; 87-09-05 ‘D’Uilepanne’, Wakken; 87-09-13 ‘Jam Club’, Gent & 87-09-26 ‘De Kreun’ Bissegem.

Dirk Jans and myself [drummer & guitarist of ‘Deviant Gedrag’], plus some members of ‘X-Creta organised concerts in Ternat/Gooik. I guess ‘W.W.W.’ were acquaintances of the latter and got invited. The entrance was free and costs were payed with profits of the Halloween Party we did in Ternat [86-11-01; ‘Lärm’, ‘Cyclone’, ‘X-Creta’, ‘Deviant Gedrag’].

Nāc Dilonīt Apsēdies (Lat) live (Riga, Lat, 91-11-01)

Standard

tracks: Fire / Do It Fuck Earth / Mamma Radji Menja Obratno (?) / Mauzolejs [“mausoleum”] / Ringolds

This band also played at a concert where we [‘Inokentijs Mārpls’] also played; that was in our Latvian capital Riga.

‘Dambis’ Raimonds Lagimovs

‘Nāc Dilonīt Apsēdies’ (“come on, sit down”; also referred to as ‘N.D.A.’) was from Kuldīga [in the west of Latvia]). A few years later they changed their name to ‘Dilönis’ and after 4 years existence, in 1994, the people formed two new bands (Vonosonoloppus’ and ‘Čapajevs Vagons’). ‘N.D.A.’ was Edgars Embergs (vocals, guitar, noises), Māris Muitnieks a.k.a. Talons Balons (bass, backing vocals) & ‘Gunča’ (drums). Sometimes another bassist (‘Štruhs’ Aleksandrs Štro) got involved…

People can read an interview that Māris did for the Czech zine Hluboká Orba (translated by ‘Mišo’ Michal Kralovič; scroll down).

I suspect (not sure) that at tthe time of this show the band’s name has already changed to ‘Dilönis’… It could also have been the last concert under the name ‘N.D.A.’ … I really can’t remember the concert.

We were active between 1990 & 1992. We started when my neighbour Edgars Embergs and I, decided to form a band despite having almost no musical background. At the time the only thing we really knew about punk was that a band called the ‘Sex Pistols’ had once existed. Early rehearsals took place in the boiler-room of a kindergarten (where I worked as a stoker) and later in a guard-shack at the construction-site of a new hospital, where the band members were doing night-shifts during their alternative civil service. The third night, guard ‘Guncha’ [Gunča] joined on drums. Our equipment was extremely primitive. The band had a guitar, a bass and a drumkit, but no real amplifier. For a while a reel-to-reel tape-recorder was used as a guitar-amp; a proper microphone only appeared much later. The name loosely translates as “come and let it wear you down”; the phrase itself is intentionally absurd and doesn’t really make complete sense even in Latvian. It actually comes from a random moment when a local guy shouted “Nāc dilonīt apsēdies!” to a friend walking by. It sounded so ridiculous that we ended up using it as the band’s name.

The music was raw, noisy and mostly constructed around simple riffs. We had humourous, absurd lyrics and wordplay rather than political themes. The band did their first recordings for Tāpēc, Ka Es Uzskrēju! [“because I ran!”] in Riga for Tornis recs in 1991. We also played at the Iecava young rock bands festival [small town in Latvia] and later travelled to a punk-festival in Venta (Lithuania), together with several other Latvian underground bands.

The core line-up consisted of Edgars (guitar, vocals, lyrics), Māris (bass, backing vocals) and ‘Guncha’ (drums). Occasionally we added another bassist: at first Mārtiņš (ex ‘Tukša Muca’) and later ‘Mad Rob’ (ex ‘Līksmā Masturbācija’); that was during our Riga period. When we returned to Kuldīga, ‘Štruhs’ (ex ‘Vihers’) joined as bassist. Then Edgars started doing drums and we played with 2 bass-guitars (that was ‘Dilönis‘ already). Later the band started working with drummer ‘Miškins, with whom we taped Gott Mit Uns [“god with us”], in our rehearsal-space in Kuldīga. That was released on Rotted Rat recs (1992). Around 1993 the band gradually evolved into ‘Dilönis’ (an old Latvian word for tuberculosis, a disease that slowly wastes a person away), moving towards a faster and more aggressive sound.

Unrest (Ger) Chinchilla Kill; tape (1998)

Standard

tracks:

Clichee Fuck And Freedom / Nothing In Between / Gang Zum Stuhl (“walk/passage to the chair”) / Nein (“no”) / Je Ne Crois Plus (“I don’t believe anymore”) / Chinchilla Kill Song / Revolution In C / Klaus, Der Arschlecker (“Klaus, the ass-licker”)

This tape was donated by Laura W. The band was labeled “anarcho-syndicalist straight edge crust punk emo” (screamo). They compared themselves with ‘Acme’ & ‘Carol’, “but with more punk influences”. Lyrics deal with nationalism, fascism, capitalism and anarchism (sung in German). The recordings were released by Custom recs (Detmold, near Bielefeld). People in the band were Felix Hedderich/Kleyderich (guitar/bass/screams) & Philipp (drums/vocals). It was a sideproject: they also played in the band ‘Endearment‘ (Köln/Cologne; together with Mirco Rappsilber).

I only know a band called ‘Unrest‘ from the Münster area. Some years ago these did an LP on my label Per Koro. They split up after some personal issues but reunited a couple months ago [2025]. Members playing in different other bands too…

Debiele Eenheid (Hol) Venus Has A Penis; tape (1990)

Standard

Listen! => (side 1) – (side 2)

On 91-10-05, the HC/punk band ‘Debiele Eenheid’ (from the Rotterdam Jazzbunker scene) played at the autonomous centre Vort’n Vis (where I volunteered). Back then the band consisted of Jorem (vocals; founder of ‘D.E.’), Niek Den Braven (bass), Henk Van Schaik (sax), Karel(tje) Dops (drums) and Joop ‘Dops’ De Doelder (guitar). ‘Long Tall’ Keesie, Kees Bijl, played guitar on this Venus Has A Penis tape and also on the 7” (released on Tirana Tunes, ’89; here’s some original studio recordings.).

Earlier I posted about a tape this “league of idiots/morons” did a couple of years before: Debiele Eenheid (Hol) Duizend Jaar Hoofdpijn; tape (1987). People can also check out some of their tracks on compilations such as Rotterdam Spunk (’83) & Thrashold (’88).

Here’s some band-history written by Michael Kopijn…

I lived in R’dam at that time and played for the band in the nineties. Small Kees (De Greef) [‘Anarcrust’ ’94-96] played drums when I was in the band between ‘92 and ‘94 I think. He also played with ‘Political Asylum’ for a bit and is on the recordings of the last two records. Long Kees still plays in ‘Reknub’ – a long-standing psychedelic punk duo.

This compilation was put together by Yann Boislève (France) in 1995. He lived in Rennes (Brittany), did the International SxE Bulletin, ran a distribution and released records. He was also a volunteer for an animal-rights organisation. After the turn of the century he did a blog entitled International Punk Hardcore for a while. Nowadays he lives in the south of France (with his partner Sandrine), where his brother Pierre ‘El Trasgo’ also is. Yann is active in the promotion of animal-rights, biodiversity, ecologic preservation and renewable energy. I already re-published an interview with him…

The title translates as “there are illusions we/people will hold onto until death”. It’s a donation from Laura W. (Synthesis).

[only live here *** the band prefers not to have their released material on DIY platforms; even it’s available from bigtech multinationals…]

My mate ‘Sies’ contributed these live recordings of the ‘Instigators (86-01-24; K.O.B., Berlin). The promo-tape for the band’s LP Phoenix (recorded and mixed March/April 1986) was a donation of Steven ‘Stel’ R. Both document the transition of the band from the ‘Hammy’ period to the ‘Tez’ era. Phoenix was the first proper album with ex-‘Xpozez‘ Andy ‘Tez’ Turner singing (though there are live recordings dating from July ’85) and ‘Trimble’ Andrew Turnbull playing bass. These gradually joined, together with Stephen/Steve ‘Cuzzy’ Curran (drums) and original member Simon Mooney (guitar), when the others – ‘Semi’ Simon Bridgewater (vocals), ‘Tab’ Simon Elsey (bass) & ‘Hammy’ Paul Halmshaw (drums) – had quit. An interview in the American zine No Answers (late ’85, early ’86) mentions ‘Semi’ became disillusioned. At that time ‘Hammy’ was still in the band; he is/was also running Peaceville (distro & label). ‘Tez’ had started doing his own ‘business’ (Retaliation / Full Circle) … In Axe Of Freedom #4 (1985-86) ‘Tez’ explains: “Hammy & Tab left on good terms. When we started to gig regularly and things got really hectic, they decided they didn’t wanna continue on a fulltime basis. Tab wanted the security of his job and Hammy wanted more time to patch his personal life up.”. In Raising Hell #13 Mooney (writes all the music and most lyrics, though Hammy writes some too) states: “When Tab & Hammy left, I definitely thought it was gonna be a different band, and if I’d thought it wouldn’t be as good, I would’ve left there; but now I think it’s as good and in its own way better.”.

Gino’s Eyeball (Bel) Me, You And Him; tape (1999)

Standard

(Listen!)

Gino’s Eyeball‘ were ‘Geoff’ Jef Van Calster (bass/vocals), Tom De Ridder (guitar/vocals) & David Crocaerts (drums/vocals; later ‘Jake’ Jan Boon) and played poppy fun-punkrock (“influenced by ‘Green Day’, ‘Blink 182’, ‘Millencolin’, etc.”). The band came across as many of that era that believed they were punk because they played punkrock music (think of ‘Sum 41’, Avril Lavigne, etc.). These people resided in the Antwerp region (Ranst). The tape was sent as a demo, for review in my zine – which didn’t happen because I had too much on my plate to finish Tilt! #10…

Brob

‘Gino’s Eyeball’ was the first best name we could think of when we wanted to participate in a ‘free stage’ contest of Studio Brussel [national “alternative” radiostation] in 1999. Being big fans of ‘Janez Detd.’ [Belgian commercial pop-punk band] could’ve had something to to with that [Gino could’ve been derived from Janez]; but Gino is no one in particular. Jan Boon joined in 2003. We took whatever gigs we could get: the more/the crazier, the better…

D-beat crust/noise from Kochi-city (Shikoku island, south Japan) with Hideki Kawakami (guitar/vocals; R.I.P.), Yousei/Fukugawa (bass), Naoto (drums) & Tsukasa (vocals). They did a few splits (7″/12″), e.g. with ‘Totalitär’ (Swe), Hellkrusher (UK), HomoMilitia (Pol), ‘Selfish’ & ‘Wind Of Pain’ (Fin) and the Japanese ‘Insane Youth’. I reviewed them in Tilt! #8 as follows: >>The Japanse Wills [‘Hiatus’ vocalist] on the mike!? More songs about war.<<

This tape was a gift of Laura W.: “I picked this tape up in a record-shop in Georgetown [historic neighbourhood in Washington DC], probably in 1991. I love the song Stop by ‘Desiderata’. The singer is Amanda MacKaye (younger sister of Ian)…”.

The bands were all connected to the Washington DC scene: most of them were from the city or the neighbouring area; styles vary (punk, HardCore, indie rock, ska). It was a benefit for the Zacchaeus free clinic (volunteer-run free medical clinic) and it was released by the label More Than Sound recs (Bethesda, Md).

I fear I have little information on these bands, though if there is any info on who assembled the compilation (I seem to recall it was someone on the edges of Postive Force but can’t recall who), I might be able to find that person and they are bound to know more. I remember being aware of ‘Repercussion’ and ‘Food’. I saw both ‘Blind Ambition’ (John Sybert might have been in this band. Could he have been the one to assemble the compilation? I can’t recall.) and ‘Rise’ who I recall as a very cool female-fronted (?) band (I liked them a lot). Sadly, I think the band ended before their time, because Noah Eig (one of their members; bass maybe?) died in a terrible accident, struck by lightning, sigh. I went to his funeral at Temple Sinai in upper NW DC. Wish I could remember more…
