Chloe, Grandma, and Portland

Chloe turned 11 this year.  We tried really hard to give her a happy birthday.  Grandma Paula was here and I think that made all the difference.  March 14th was a crazy day.  Emma was still grumpy because she was recovering from the flu.  Brad and I were getting sick and trying to get ready to go out of town early the next morning.  The furnace broke the day before and it was scheduled to be fixed that day.  The big girls both had piano lessons that evening.

Chloe happily went to school where she could see her friends and share a treat (Birthday Oreos).  She came home to spend time with Grandma.  Because Chloe's birthday is also Pi Day (3.14...) she chose to have quiche for dinner and banana cream pie for dessert.  Yum!  Sadly, I didn't get very many pictures because I forgot to make sure the camera was charged.  Chloe got some fun gifts though and loved them all.  See, look how excited she is about just a hanger...

The real gift, a skirt from Grandma Paula.

Grandma watched the kiddos while Brad and I were in Portland with Brent and Ashley for March Madness (the basketball, not the previous two weeks of our life).  They really enjoyed having her visit.

And we discovered that Sarah and Grandma are within an inch of being the same height.  Watch out Grandma!  She'll probably be taller than you the next time we are together!

Brad and I had a nice time in Portland.  It would have been nicer if we hadn't been sick, but sometimes you take what you can get.  Brad and Brent saw some fun basketball games.  Ash and I got mani's and pedi's at the same time (as in, they worked on our hands and feet at the same time).  We all did lots of shopping and visited Multnomah Falls.  Ash's blog post is much more thorough than mine.  We arrived back home at noon on Sunday.  Just enough time to do laundry and head off to our next destination....

March Madness

You probably thought this would be a post about basketball, but nope!  The title is equally fitting to the first two weeks of March 2012 for our family.

We started out the month by welcoming Chloe home from 5th grade camp.  Every year, the 5th graders at EPO head up to Islandwood on Bainbridge.  They camp (in cabins), explore, learn, and have a ton of fun for 4 crazy days.  After coming home, Chloe retreated into the boys room to play Legos and enjoy some quiet time.  While I was in Emma's room putting her down for a nap, I kept hearing very one-sided conversations between Aaron and Chloe.  He was chatting up a storm and her responses were along the lines of, "mmm-hmm", "yeah", "huh".  Pretty soon it got quiet.  I figured Aaron had given up.  Well, he had, but for good reason:

Chloe was completely sacked out on top of a bunch of Legos.

She was still sleeping hard when I had to wake her up a couple of hours later for dinner.  She was totally worn out!  She'd had a great time at camp though, so it was worth waking up to Lego imprints on her face and arms.

Brad has been helping out different schools in the community with hands-on science stuff.  During one science fair thing, he was in charge of launching paper air rockets.  Totally up his alley!  So of course, what did he build the very next weekend?  His own air launcher!

He and Aaron had a blast.  The other kids and all the neighborhood boys did too, once they got home from school.  Plus, Brad got to use his new air compressor and that was very exciting.  ;)

Aaron loves to take pictures and it's fun to see what he captures.  Here is a shot of a typical day.  I'm on the couch doing who knows what on the computer and also talking on the phone.  The cat is begging for attention.  Aaron has built a pile of pillows and blankets for jumping and crashing on.  There is a laundry basket in the foreground because I am forever working on laundry.  Emma must have been napping or I'm sure she'd be in the picture too.

Sarah and Chloe had a little photo shoot with Chloe as the model.

She looks so different without her glasses!

One evening while Brent and Ash were here, the girls got silly with the blankets.  I can't remember what prompted this because I was in the other room trying to put Emma to bed.  I was unsuccessful though because of all the laughter in the family room.  We came out and joined in the giggles.

We were all laughing our heads off at these silly girls.  Emma wanted in on the action with her own cute hair.

And then it snowed.  This one was tough to take because by March I am sooooooo ready for spring!  The boys were excited though.

Kyle came home from school one day and made a flag for our front yard.  It says, "The Brown family's home".  I was so proud of him for putting that apostrophe in the right spot!  The flag stayed there for a couple of days until the rain and the wind had their way with it.

Brad was finally able to rewire his motorcycle.  It had some sort of short and burned up a bunch of stuff back in December.  He was worried about being able to get the parts since they aren't readily available anymore.  He got them though and came in happy and dirty after getting it all put back together.

I made a teddy bear hat for the new baby of one of Brad's coworkers.  It was my first attempt at bear ears and I think they turned out super cute.  The hat was a little big, but babies grow, right?

Sarah worked hard to complete her project for the History Day her Quest class was competing in.  The project involved a lot of research and hard work.  She didn't move on to the next level in the competition, but she felt like she learned a lot and will be better prepared for next year.  Thanks to Ash for helping out with the vinyl letters both for this and Chloe's science fair board!

And lastly, before we hit mid-March, we were struck with the flu.  First Kyle, then Emma, and then Brad and me.  Ugh.  No fun.  Emma was the worst off, being so young.  This picture is of Emma and Brad during one of the handful of breaks I got from holding her.  She wanted nothing but her momma for nearly 48 hours.
It was hard to battle through the sickness and have Chloe's birthday, grandmas coming to visit and two vacations that all needed preparations.  Those events, though, are for future posts.

Well, there we are.  The first half of March.  I wasn't sure I was ever going to get around to blogging about it.  Hurray for one more thing checked off the list!
