Baby Brookshire Update - Pregnancy at 32 weeks

I am now 32 weeks along. Baby is now head down and the fetal heartbeat is at 140bpm. Strong and healthy! My weight gain is at about 18 pounds and the baby's measurements are right on target. The doctor's have no concerns about this pregnancy at all.
My belly is getting bigger although women on the street love to tell me how small I am or how I am way too small. All I know is the doctors are saying all my stats are perfect, so I stick with that.
Bella moves all the time now and like to remind me when I am slouching with a nice strong kick! Sean can feel her moving now and I often spend time sitting on the couch or laying in bed watching my belly move. I have even had coworkers notice as my belly leaps and lurches during meetings, so I guess I can't be that small ... ha!
Anyway, that's really all the news I have for now. Doctor appointments are every two weeks for the next month and then I go in every week. We're in the homestretch with just 8 weeks left!

Baby Brookshire Update - pregnancy at 28 weeks

Another really bad picture of me, but a great look at my beautiful Bella bump! I really need to have Sean take better pictures of the belly!

The Proud Parents at 22 weeks

So as you may know, I was in my dear friend, Ann's wedding this weekend. My marvelous mother was kind enough to make me a dress that worked with my growing belly. We had this picture taken of Sean and I and our Bella bump. Sean is making her look bigger than she really is, but it's still a fun picture!

Betts-Porter Wedding

So this weekend, Ann and Cory tied the knot! I was so excited when Ann told me shortly after they met that she thought Cory was her guy and even more excited the night she called me to say that Cory had proposed and she said "yes!" So I felt enormously blessed that my dear friend asked me to be one of her bridesmaids on her and Cory's special day.

The weekend was marvelous ... perfect weather, great people and lots of good times. Here are just a few pictures from the festivities!

Congratulations, Mr. & Mrs. Porter!

Baby Brookshire update - pregnancy at 20 weeks

Here is the most recent update on Baby Brookshire.

I am now 20 weeks and 4 days along. We had a doctor’s appointment Friday afternoon. Baby is now approximately weighing in at 12 ounces and the fetal heartbeat is at about 140bpm. Strong and healthy! We had our anatomy ultrasound at this appointment and got to see the baby’s spine, stomach, legs, feet, lungs, brain, nasal passage, diaphragm, and face. Does the science amaze anyone else? They can now tell in utero if your child will have club foot and cleft palette … they can measure the femurs and the different lobes in the brain and even see the kids DIAPHRAGM … are you kidding me? Science certainly never ceases to amaze me.

Oh and of course, they can determine the sex of your child all at only 20 weeks pregnant … so stinkin’ cool. So now we can officially announce that in February we will be welcoming a little girl into the world. We’re going to have a daughter! Holy wow! Her name will be Bella Marie Brookshire and we can’t wait to meet her.

I can now feel Bella moving frequently. I can’t wait until Sean can feel it too! This weekend she kicked so hard that I swear if she was bigger it would have been one of those kicks where you can see the outline of the foot on the stomach.

I am still feeling good; and the good news is that baby has allowed me to start eating green vegetables again …yay! I get my salads back! Weight gain is now at 3 lbs. now and I am beginning to rapidly develop my baby bump. All pre-pregnancy pants, skirts, and shorts are no longer an option and I have learned that full panel pants are sooo much more comfortable than under belly … Bella is really low!

Same goal as last month which is to do much more yoga and get into the gym more frequently, so that I can look unmistakably pregnant and not just like a chunky monkey. Although, my Mom and one of the ladies in the office says my belly is definitely starting to pop out.

My next appointment is October 4th and that should just be my basic monthly check-up. The nursery is coming along so wonderfully (thank you mostly to my extremely talented husband). I will make sure to take pictures and post them soon.

Baby Brookshire Update - pregnancy at 12 weeks

I am now 12 weeks and 3 days along. Baby is now approximately 7.5cm and the fetal heartbeat is at 165bpm. Strong and healthy! Yesterday was amazing! The ultrasound had such high resolution that we could see the entire heart expanding and contracting … way cooler than just a blip on a screen. Baby was moving and kicking and had its hands up by its face and ankles crossed most of the time.

The tech took the time so show us everything she could … as she was waiting for baby to cooperate so she could get the image she needed. So Sean asked if the tech saw a third leg (haha!). So with that she searched and searched and could not find the third leg Sean was hoping for. The MD and the tech weren’t willing to call it for sure, but they both were inclined to bet on a girl. We should know for sure next month. Sean texted me this morning: “Our baby is already cute. I need to go rifle shopping.” Haha! Love it!

I am still feeling good; the majority of the nausea has stopped. I am still just tired all the time! I still haven’t gained any weight yet (phfew!), but my waist is slowly vanishing. I have another doctor’s appointment next Wednesday with my OB and we’ll see what she says then.

Big Announcement!

As I eluded to in my previous post, Havasupai was a life changing experience for Sean and I. At the time, we had no clue exactly how big of a life change it truly was. Sean and I are proud to announce that (courtesy of an amazing weekend in the Grand Canyon), we are expecting our first child! We don't know much yet, but we do know that our baby is expected in February 2011.

Yay! We are so excited! First grandbaby for both sides of the family!

Havasupai

I can't really explain why it has taken me so long to post on our blog, other than perhaps I have been just too busy with life to stop and try to find the right words to tell our stories. However, this adventure is one that I have to share. This adventure is one that i know has changed both of our lives forever.

Just three weeks ago, after more than nine months of anticipation, Sean and I went on our first multi-day backpacking adventure together. We and my dear friends, Ann and Beth, and a whole gaggle of new friends all hiked into a remote corner of the Grand Canyon to a place known as Havasupai.

I have been hearing astounding things about Havasupai every since I moved to Arizona. Every time I have heard someone speak of it or looked at someone's pictures of it.

So after four days of waiting for a call to get through to the village Campground, Ann finally got through and was able to book our weekend in Havasupai - one of those places on Earth that reminds you how lucky you are to be alive.

Sean was completely amped to go! This was going to be a challenge with a HUGE reward at the end. To get to Havasupai, you either hike, helicopter in, or take a mule. We decided to hike in (of course) and to carry all our supplies that we would need for the trip. The others we were making the trip with hiked as well, but opted to have the pack mules do all the heavy lifting for them. What can I say, Sean and I love a challenge, so we trained for months carrying our large multi-day packs which by the time it came to go, weighed a little more than 40 pounds each.

So we left Thursday afternoon to drive North to Seligman, Arizona where we dined at the Roadkill Cafe and then slept for the evening so that we could get an early start on the trail. Sean and I opted to leave at sun-up so that we could enjoy watching the Canyon walls come alive with the sun, which meant we woke up at 4am to drive the 82 miles to the trailhead to get underway as the morning settled in.

To get to Havasupai, you start at the rim of the Canyon and hike about a mile and a half down sharp, steep, rocky switchbacks to reach the canyon floor.

This is a local dog that hiked with us from the parking lot until about three miles into the canyon when he found another canine friend of his running with one of the muletrains! We named him Max.

Once you get to the canyon floor, you begin to hike a little more than six miles down a wash that winds gradually between the red canyon walls slowly bringing you down even further into the canyon where you finally come upon the first signs of water ...

We stopped on occasion to let the mules and horses pass or to tighten our boots.

... this is when we finally came upon the first sign of the emerald green stream that eventually widens up to revel the brilliant topaz colored water that runs along the side of the Supai village.
There is a native American tribe that still lives here, this is where Sean and I stopped to have lunch and wait for the rest of our group to check into the campground.

Once the group arrived and we were all checked in, Sean and i started our way through the village and down the sandy trail that would take us the last two miles to the campground. As e travel down that sandy trail, we finally get a view of the first set of falls.

The sign says it all!

Two members of the group had left ahead of us to scope out a camping area large enough for the 14 people in our group, but once Sean and I got to the campground, we couldn't find them, We walked up and down the campground, up and down each side of the creek and to no avail. We just never found Ko and Kara, so with my foot killing me (something had just popped inside the ball of my foot) and us both running low on water and ready to be done with those heavy packs, we decided to find a place to set up camp vowing to find the rest of the group later.
So once we were all setup, we wandered through the campground once more in search of our group and could not find them, so we decided to put on our swim suits and head down to the falls nearest to the back of the campground.
So it was on our way down the steep cliff face on the way to the falls that we finally found the rest of our group, so with that resolved, we climbed our way down the slippery, steep footholds to the pool at the bottom of Mooney Falls.
Once to the bottom, we stripped down and waded through the water to delight in the invigorating spray from the fall.
After we returned from Mooney Falls, we went to find our group when Ann, Beth, and Nichelle were already walking up to our campground ... together at last! Sean and I kinda laughed off the prospect of moving our campsite, but agreed to go join the rest of the group for dinner conversation, games, and other nighttime campground antics.
I think we headed back to our camp around 7 o' clock that night, we played a couple card games, sipped on some of the wine we packed in and then fell fast asleep to the sounds of the creek running by.
The rest of the weekend consisted of more of the same: hiking, eating, crawling down rocks to get to waterfalls, swimming, playing, and making new friends.

Sean even ended up swimming up to one of the falls, finger gripping his way along side of the rushing water, to dive under a large rock to leap out into the rushing fall and allow it to push him out into the pool - smiling and laughing like an eight-year-old boy. It was great! I haven't seen him smile like that since our wedding day.

All this while, my left foot was in excruciating pain, I had injured it somehow a couple days prior and knew that the hike in and all the activity was probably only going to male it worse, but I just couldn't help myself. I had to go! We had been waiting way too long for this and chances were we wouldn't be able to reschedule this for a couple years since we plan to try to start our family this summer. So I powered through, but let me tell you after hiking more than 10 miles on Friday, probably close to six miles on Saturday, the hike out on Sunday was not so appealing.
So Sunday morning came, we broke down camp, loaded our packs and headed out. Sunday morning was a windy one to say the least; we had a 10-30mph head wind the entire time out of the Canyon. We got sandblasted the entire way. My foot hurt so bad on the way out that I started to favor my foot even more and in turn felt the blisters on my feet enlarging, and we still had that mile and a half of steep, switchbacks up the side of the canyon wall before we were back to the car.

Sean is amazing and cheered me on the entire way and I, of course, was too stubborn to let him help me. However, he eventually took about 10 pounds of the weight from my pack to make my load easier and made me stop to take in the view and remember why we were doing all of this ... and we finally made it!

... and let me tell you, despite all the pain in our legs when we tried to get out of the car in Prescott to grab dinner and the fact that our feet were so sore that we took baby steps for the next two days, we would do it again in a heartbeat.
This trip changed our lives ... it was our first real HUGE adventure together! We loved everything about the trip ... even the tears in my eyes the last three miles out of the canyon. We were so good together on this trip! We can't wait until our next big adventire! Havasupai will always be very dear to us!

Birthday in a Hot Air Balloon

Since I was a young teenager in San Diego going to the beach in Del Mar, I have dreamed of taking a hot air balloon ride. I never looked into it, I just always dreamed and never did anything about it ... which, let's face it, is not like me at all.

So imagine my intense excitement, when Sean told me that for my birthday this year, he was taking me on a sunrise hot air balloon ride! That's right ... I have the most thoughtful husband! So on Saturday, April 17th, we woke up before the sun and drove down to Chandler to dance in the clouds with the sun!

Due to a hilarious and fabulously coincidental chain of events, we ended up with our own private balloon and Sean got to help the pilot prepare our balloon. Here is what my fabulous birthday morning looked like.
To make a great thing even better, there just happened to be a gathering of ballooners that morning, so what would normally be two or three balloons in the air turned out to be more than a dozen balloons dancing in the sunrise!

We reached a max elevation of a little over 3,000 ft. This was our view from the balloon of the Chandler and Gilbert farmland.

Our pilot was so super talented! These balloon pilots are captive to wind patterns although they can control where the wind takes them, they can't always go the exact route or direction they want. So this morning the winds took us over some huge housing developments, so the pilot set our balloon down smooth as silk in the middle of an HOA park. Ha!

As we were descending, we noticed people walking into their back yards to watch the balloon flying over head. When we landed loads of Chandler moms and their beautiful pajama clad, bright eyed children poured out of their SUVs and mini-vans to look at the balloon. So while Sean and I ate fruit and poundcake and sipped on mimosas, the neighborhood kids helped the balloon team push all the air out.
I took these pictures for one of the Moms who didn't have her camera. So I emailed them to her later that weekend, so she could have this rare and adorable Saturday morning to share with her loved ones.

One of the best birthdays ever! Well, other than the one two years ago when Sean made me the happiest woman in the world by proposing!
I like this whole let's see who can spoil the other one more thing Sean and I have going on. It's good ... we are great ... life is amazing!
