A derby. Done.

It's that time again...

And last night's Pinewood Derby was a nail-biter.

There were some pretty impressive entries.

Ours were not the fastest (by a long shot) but were fun to make.
"Killer" and Tate's Pick-up truck stayed behind the pack most of the time to make sure any trolls that fell off got a ride to the finish line.

Thankfully, amidst defeat, my boys were graceful in their losing, and clearly
still having a good time.

With 23 cars in a double-elimination tournament, you can imagine we were there for a while.

There were plenty of animated fans, astonished at some of the results.

But to be honest, by the end, a lot of us shared the obvious sentiments of this tired-out fan.

It got pretty heated there at the end as to who would claim victory.

After all...look at what was at stake!

Some of us couldn't wait for the treats.

But when that time FINALLY arrived, we were more than willing to consume these.

And so ...until we meet again, crowded around this same sturdy track, we'll be researching ideas on how to create faster cars.

random sampler...

Just like in the Friend. Or is it the Ensign that has the Random Sampler?
At any rate, I love how the sound of it justifies the discussion of completely un-related items.

♦ heart rate.

Funny, that I bought a heart rate monitor last week as a way to keep better tabs on myself during workouts....

and where I really needed it was when I bravely attended the follow-up to Bret's Geography Bee win last week, the district bee.
It would have been interesting to monitor my HR fluctuations during the competition. I'm pretty sure my heart was beating as fast as it was during my spin class this morning each time the questions crept up to Bret.

He was edged out by some fierce district-wide competition, but did great, and got a top-notch inflatable globe for participating. The framed certificate seems very pale in comparison.

♦ movie night

When we're not doing the date-night thing, we deem Friday night our "Pizza & Movie Night." A blanket is sprawled to cover our family room carpet and pizza is consumed as movies are viewed. I know, you're grateful for the explanation since the title was misleading.

I don't do well in the same room with pizza, since I want to eat every last piece, but have recently found comfort in this de-lite-ful version here, from our neighborhood Papa Murphy's that makes it all seem more feasible.

Doug and I split this one right down the middle.

♦ discovery
Am I the only one ??? who didn't know you could eliminate all kinds of fat and calories by simply popping the top of your favorite diet (or other) soda and pour the contents into a bowl with a cake mix and voila...you have this:

Where have I been? My kids couldn't tell the difference. Granted, they are a bit flat, but then again, maybe my stomach would be too, if I eat these instead of the original.

♦ curtains

Abby's preschool group took a field trip today to a local candy store. They received a fine tour of the facility and a demonstration of how to coat just about anything with chocolate. Two words were used somewhat nonchalantly, yet caught my attention and I haven't since been able to free them from my thoughts:

"chocolate curtain"
and I don't even LIKE chocolate...?

♦ language acquisition

a hollering sound of sorts just rang from the bathtub where my youngest is bathing.
It was:"ayudan me!"

How many of us does he want to help him out of there anyway?

and...that's it. Yeah, I told you it was random.

stok-ed-ness...

As long as I'm feeling associated with important people, I should add that...
I'm way stoked.
I just got off the phone with Mindy Gledhill

regarding the upcoming concert and all...

I'm heading down to Provo next weekend for the concert on Monday.

my lil' assignment: a lil' videography!

I'm excited to be able to contribute in this way.

You can still buy tickets or contribute to or participate in the silent auction by clicking on those links.

All proceeds from both are being donated to the Nie Recovery fund.
I continue to be inspired by Stephanie (& family)'s faith and optimism.
After complaining about not being able to wash my dishes in either the broken dishwasher or leaky kitchen faucet this morning, I read her latest post and suddenly feel like I should take them out into the 23° and wash them in the frozen hose water with my feet.

Redlands Represent...

It's a good thing I watched it at the gym because when I got home to show Doug, my DVR had sufficiently malfunctioned and it wasn't there.

While treading away on the mill and such, as this segment finally came on, I felt like interrupting everyone else watching it (almost half the floor) and saying,
"Hey! I know him! I was in that one roadshow with him and we sang Aladdin songs!"

This will be a fun season to watch!

For some reason, the video isn't loading to this post, but you can go HERE to see it.

Along with my spin instructor training on The Biggest Loser and Lost starting up again tonight...man, there's so much good TV and so few people to clean my house while I watch all of it.

Adoro el lunes

Unlike most, I love Mondays.
The house is a war zone,
yet I seem to have no problems leaving it this way as I...
1.) Run much-needed AM errands 2.) Take a nap with my toddler 3.) Teach some piano and then prepare for the
evening home with the family.

In honor of the Nie's return to blogdome, I added
avocado to our whole-wheat bagel pizzas tonight.

I thought of her each time one melted in my mouth amidst the marinara and mozzarella.

We mustered through and survived another FHE and I made a
note to self: Get Doug a pocket version of The Children's songbook.

For dessert?
What else but the leaning tower of chocolate cake.

I finished the evening with a leap of faith, allowing camera-handling privileges to my eldest for Abby's requested shot.

Tuesday, let me tell ya...you've got some big shoes to fill.

the girls with the hats...and stuff

I know, I know...these go on the other blog, but I had to do it...
I had to show you what level of cuteness I've been working with lately.

These sisters were here earlier in the week and kindly obliged when I expressed a need to experiment with some new hats.

Moms with girls: Come quick!
I have more hats and new backgrounds coming.

...and Kyle doesn't like it when I try them on him.

It's no wonder I need Nexium...

First of all, sorry for these really poor pictures.
I didn't have my beastly camera, but was glad my phone offered backup assistance.

Seriously, I think I was more nervous about the
School Geography Bee
than Bret was.
He decided last Thursday (after being nominated in his class) that he'd go ahead and do it,
then proceeded to study for five days straight.
Each time it was his turn to answer, I did everything I possibly could to avoid throwing up. I looked at the ceiling, out the window, crossed and un-crossed my legs six or seven times, etc. Each time, he sailed through, allowing for a leveling-off of my elevated heart rate.
It was almost more than I could cope with.
When he made it to the final round, we were cautiously excited, and even more nervous.
And then when he was left with just one other person,
I had to leave the room.
(well, and because Kyle was disrupting the seemingly necessary silence)

I came back in for the last two questions which were both answered correctly, and then an announcement, that with that...
he was the official winner!

He was so happy, I almost started to cry right there in the science fiction section.
Now he goes on to the district bee and takes a test to qualify for the state competition.

I should check my prescription before committing attendance to either.
I should add, that out of the 20 (or so) questions he was asked,
I knew the answer to one of them.
...and I claim to be a teacher.

the weekend, and stuff...

It's been a most fulfilling weekend. I love those kind.
(and I got to sleep in today! Thank you, kind husband, for allowing such.)

Saturday morning I got my behind handed to me in an old school
ward womens B-Ball game!
(you know, ward vs. ward with all the kids running around and the calling of your own fouls and so on)

Who knew they still did that? So fun. We had only one sub and needed oxygen, but we still won the game even if we weren't supposed to care about the score. (okay, but people like me always care about the score.)

Enjoying the so warm (42° ?) weather, we ventured out into the backyard for a picnic lunch. Our view of the hospital under construction is just...mmmmmm.....breathtaking. no?

Immediately following, I had a couple of photo shoots which were
oh, too much fun.

I'm having great fun scouring this town for unique locations.

Here are some (okay, a lot) of the bounties of the three hours...

This awesome senior beauty happened to bring along a shirt identical to the one I was wearing. So of course, we had to take a picture of that. I'm pretty sure she thinks I'm a little crazy.

Then as part of the town's "Cabin Fever Day," the kids and Doug went to the local planetarium for a free showing of their space exploration experience (or something to that effect) while Kyle and I made taquitos and salsa for an outing we went to that evening with some neighbors.

Today at ward conference, I was richly fed by ward and stake leaders. And, Kyle slept through Sacrament Meeting, proof that
miracles still happen.
After, we had some friends over for Thanksgiving Dinner (since I ran out of room in the freezer to house that other turkey I bought a couple months ago) and we did the DDR and the Wii and the root beer floats...tired everyone out for bed and hoping they'll all get up for school tomorrow.

Thanks weekend, see ya in another 5.

Night Riders...

so, last night at about 8:30 as I was scrubbing the rest of the day off my face, anxious to crawl into bed (and don't give me grief about my early bedtime either. I get up at 4:45 and as such have no qualms about dozing off before 9) the doorbell rings and hefty knocking follows.
I spring from the bathroom like a Siberian Husky wondering
what on earth...?
Turns out it was some friends down the street
on their quads
with their tubes,
for some (awesome) FHE
inquiring as to whom would like to take a spin around the block with them.
Of course, my boys' and their selectively-exceptional hearing skills couldn't pass up the opportunity to beg us if they could promptly emerge from their pjs to take a ride.
Heck, I wanted to go too, so how could I deny them such?
They were out for a good 20 minutes and upon returning, Tate's most succinct remarks say it all.
"That was the funnest ever thing I've ever done in my whole life, ever!"

Thanks Becky & co. ...they'll be talking about this nonstop for another 6 weeks (if not years) straight.
Mark my words.
And can I just say...? We love it here.

our NYE in order

The following sequence of events was only part of the excitement over
New Years in Sandy
with some Lehnhof cousins.

We shared the beloved Cafe Rio Salad again, (didn't I just blog about that? Maybe I'm obsessed. Because we also had it on the way home the next day?!?!)
played Ticket to Ride and Jen and I fell asleep to "Beat the Experts" trivia.

On our way home we got some Brazilian love from our Brazilian side of the family ;-)

and then stopped briefly for more cousin time (must do again. soon.) in Layton.
We're home now, loving our routine, and more snow!
