Grandma and Santa Claus

This story came to me through email and I thought it would be a perfect blog post. This is definitely our stance on Santa around here, and will continue to be when the "question" is asked. I hope you enjoy this sweet story as much as I did!

* * *

Grandma and Santa Claus
I BELIEVE IN SANTA CLAUS

I remember my first Christmas adventure with Grandma. I was just a kid. I remember tearing across town on my bike to visit her. On the way, my big sister dropped the bomb: "There is no Santa Claus," she jeered. "Even dummies know that!"

My Grandma was not the gushy kind, never had been. I fled to her that day because I knew she would be straight with me. I knew Grandma always told the truth, and I knew that the truth always went down a whole lot easier when swallowed with one of her "world-famous" cinnamon buns. I knew they were world-famous, because Grandma said so.. It had to be true.

Grandma was home, and the buns were still warm. Between bites, I told her everything. She was ready for me. "No Santa Claus?" she snorted ..."Ridiculous! Don't believe it! That rumor has been going around for years, and it makes me mad, plain mad!! Now, put on your coat, and let's go.."

"Go? Go where, Grandma?" I asked. I hadn't even finished my second world-famous cinnamon bun.

"Where" turned out to be Kerby's General Store, the one store in town that had a little bit of just about everything. As we walked through its doors, Grandma handed me ten dollars. That was a bundle in those days. "Take this money," she said, "and buy something for someone who needs it. I'll wait for you in the car." Then she turned and walked out of Kerby's.

I was only eight years old. I'd often gone shopping with my mother, but never had I shopped for anything all by myself. The store seemed big and crowded, full of people scrambling to finish their Christmas shopping.

For a few moments I just stood there, confused, clutching that ten-dollar bill, wondering what to buy, and who on earth to buy it for. I thought of everybody I knew: my family, my friends, my neighbors, the kids at school, the people who went to my church.

I was just about thought out, when I suddenly thought of Bobby Decker. He was a kid with bad breath and messy hair, and he sat right behind me in Mrs. Pollock's grade-two class. Bobby Decker didn't have a coat. I knew that because he never went out to recess during the winter. His mother always wrote a note telling the teacher that he had a cough, but all we kids knew that Bobby Decker didn't have a cough; he didn't have a good coat.

I fingered the ten-dollar bill with growing excitement. I would buy Bobby Decker a coat! I settled on a red corduroy one that had a hood to it. It looked real warm, and he would like that. "Is this a Chris tmas present for someone?" the lady behind the counter asked kindly, as I laid my ten dollars down.

"Yes, ma'am," I replied shyly. "It's for Bobby."

The nice lady smiled at me, as I told her about how Bobby really needed a good winter coat. I didn't get any change, but she put the coat in a bag, smiled again, and wished me a Merry Christmas.

That evening, Grandma helped me wrap the coat (a little tag fell out of the coat, and Grandma tucked it in her Bible) in Christmas paper and ribbons and wrote, "To Bobby, From Santa Claus" on it. Grandma said that Santa always insisted on secrecy. Then she drove me over to Bobby Decker's house, explaining as we went that I was now and forever officially, one of Santa's helpers.

Grandma parked down the street from Bobby's house, and she and I crept noiselessly and hid in the bushes by his front walk. Then Grandma gave me a nudge. "All right, Santa Claus," she whispered, "get going."

I took a deep breath, dashed for his front door, threw the present down on his step, pounded his door and flew back to the safety of the bushes and Grandma.

Together we waited breathlessly in the darkness for the front door to open. Finally it did, and there stood Bobby.

Fifty years haven't dimmed the thrill of those moments spent shivering, beside my Grandma, in Bobby Decker's bushes. That night, I realized that those awful rumors about Santa Claus were just what Grandma said they were: ridiculous. Santa was alive and well, and we were on his team.

I still have the Bible, with the coat tag tucked inside: $19.95. May you always have LOVE to share, HEALTH to spare and FRIENDS that care...And may you always believe in the magic of Santa Claus!

All Ethan Wants for Christmas...

is his two front teeth!

I remember when I was little, probably Ethan's age around 7 or 8, I thought it would be the coolest thing to have my two front teeth missing for Christmas just so I could sing that song. I was pretty close that year when I had one missing front tooth and only part of the other one grown in. But Ethan is 100% official since he has two of his front teeth completely missing. The first one fell out a few weeks ago just before Thanksgiving and he finally pulled out the other one a few days ago. So if you happen to see Ethan around this holiday season make sure to ask him to wish you a "Merry Krithmas!"

A Not-so-fun Vacation

In September Chad and I decided it would be fun to take the family on a little fall vacation. We planned to go to Moab, somewhere we've never been before (go figure!)--it sounded so nice to just get away for a few days. Well, not to long after our vacation discussion, Noah had an appointment with the ENT who determined that Noah needed his tonsils out...soon. THEN, Aaron had his initial speech therapy evaluation and they noticed that he was saying almost exclusively only vowel sounds. They said they didn't think his ear tubes (placed less than a year ago at the time) were working right. Hence another trip to the ENT who said Aaron needed new tubes and his adenoids out. Of course, all of our medical flex spending money for the year was gone by then and that meant we had two surgeries that needed to be done ASAP and paid for out of pocket. So we changed our plans. We decided to go on a vacation to the McKay Dee Surgical Center in nearby Ogden, Utah. I'm not certain since I've never been to Moab before, but I can almost bet that Moab would've been a whole lot more fun than the surgical center!

What wasn't meant to be. At least not this year.

Thankfully the surgeries went well. Noah was in on Monday and thankfully there haven't been any major complications. It's still taking him awhile to recover--he still seems a little out of it a lot of the time and is super moody. Aaron went in on Thursday and although his surgery was a lot less intensive he had some kind of reaction to one of the medicines they gave him after the surgery and it made for an interesting ride home. But he's doing excellent now, and other than his bad breath you'd never know he even had surgery!

Noah's tonsils. It seemed like a good idea to add a picture, but
since I last looked at them some of the blood has leaked out of the
tonsils into the fluid and it's kind of gross.

Aaron's tiny tubes from last year. They were still stuck in his ears,
just not in the right places unfortunately!

To add to the fun of our surgical center week, we continued with the medical theme of our "vacation" and Ethan had a dentist appointment on Thursday (it doesn't get any more fun than that!) and Aaron and Noah were able to get the H1N1 vaccination on Saturday. I will say that amidst all this fun, I am so grateful that my boy's were able to get these procedures they so desparately needed and that everyone is safe. I'm hoping that although my kids heads are lighter (void of adenoids, tonsils, and copius amounts of ear fluid) and our pocket books are lighter, that they will be in general more healthy and more happy in the years to come. :)

Noah and the Garbage Can

If you have kids, say age 10 and under, ask them what this is. Go ahead, ask. I'll wait.

We were at Maverik today picking out a Redbox movie. The Redbox machine stands next to an object that looks very similar to the item in the picture above. Thus sets the stage for the following conversation with Noah:

Noah: Ew! Ethan's playing with a garbage can!
Me: (alarmed at first, and then relieved) That's not a garbage can, Noah. Stop it Ethan.
Noah: Yes, it is too a garbage can!
Me: Are you serious Noah, you really think that's a garbage can?
Noah: Yesss...
Me: (smiling) What if I told you it wasn't a garbage can? What else do you think it might be?
Noah: A bathroom?
Me: Seriously? You think it's a bathroom?
Noah: I guess...
Me: Would you be surprised if I told you it was a telephone?
Noah: It doesn't look like a telephone.
Me: I promise, it really is a telephone.
Noah: Oh.

I guess I've never stopped to think how much phones have changed over the years! As I stopped to think about it I guess pay phones really don't look much like these, do they?I think his next guess about it being a bathroom might have been based on the shape of a urinal but I'm not sure. I sure got a good laugh out of this little conversation though! It reminds me of the time I was teaching a Young Women's lesson and the girls had no idea what a typewriter was! I must be getting old! :)

Kindergarten

Noah had his first day of Kindergarten today and true to form, he molded right into this new phase of his life without any hesitation. I took him to school this afternoon and as we waited out in front of the school for his teacher to open the door and let all the students in he kept asking me, "When can we go in?" and "When are we going to start?" The second the doors opened he rushed right in, found his desk, and sat down. He is so excited to start school and so far, really seems to love his teacher and his new class. I don't know if his teacher realizes this or not, but she is one lucky lady to have this little boy in her classroom every day. I'm pretty sure I'm biased, but he is such a sweet little boy and is always so willing to help. I will certainly miss him during those few hours that he's gone from home.

And, if you'd like to know how I feel about all of this, please read the post below. ;) Yep, still feeling that way.

Feeling Torn

When school got out in June I remember feeling overwhelmed at the though of having three kids at home--all day, every day. The thought of running errands with all three kids was scary, and the task of lining up activities to stave off boredom each and every day seemed daunting. But I had big plans. I printed out a calendar for June, July and August and planned to schedule our summer with fun and to squeeze out every drop and enjoy every moment of our summer.

I threw out those calendars the other day--nothing had ever been written on them. The summer flew by! Here it is the end of August and as the weather is starting to turn cool I'm ready to cry foul. I want my summer back--where did it go!?! Ethan started 1st grade today and Noah will begin Kindergarten next week. I feel so torn about all of this! Am I excited about having quiet afternoons while the boys are at school and Aaron naps? Do I look forward to the end of "those days" when my boys would argue and fight all day? Yes, of course! And I love knowing that my boys are having new opportunities to make new friends, adjusting to different environments, and learning and experiencing all kinds of cool stuff. I love seeing my kids grow.

But I'm also sad to think of how quiet it will be while they're gone. They are my little friends--they keep me company throughout the day and frequently help me clean up and keep Aaron entertained (some days that's a pretty tough job!) There are so many things we didn't get to do this summer. We never went on our adventure to check out the aquatic center near our house, we didn't have our picnic in the park, we never went to Lagoon (our boys have never even been there, how sad is that!) and we only visited the library once. Most of all, as much as I love to see my children grow it makes me so sad to watch them growing up. I wish they could just stay little--sweet, loving, naive, and cute--forever.

So, once again, I'm feeling torn. I know we'll adjust to this new schedule and the boys will love the time they spend in school. And I know I'll love having some time to myself and a window of time to run errands with just one boy. But best of all, in less than 10 months it'll be summer again and we'll have three whole months of time to laugh and play!

Summer Time

A few months ago Chad was organizing all of our digital photos and he said, "We have way more pictures from the winter seasons than we do from the summer. Does that mean we actually DO more in the winter?" I laughed. "No," I said, "It's because winter is so miserable that when you do something that's fun you feel like you need to document with a million pictures!"

And so it goes with bloging. I can't believe I haven't posted since May. Where has the summer gone?! It makes me sad to think that in just a few weeks the boys will be starting back to school and fall will be on its way. We've had such a wonderful but busy summer and it's just flown by so fast. We've spent countless hours putting in our yard (the last batch of sod was laid just last weekend!), went camping up at Lava Hot Springs, swimming at Bear Lake, and just celebrated our 10th anniversary with a "Chad and Andrea only" cruise down to Mexico. It's been an amazing summer.

So, no, we haven't been sucked into a big black hole the past few months. We've just been out enjoying life and loving every minute of it! ;)

This spring season was a particular rough one for playing soccer. The boys had a blast and did great, no doubt, but we had horrible weather and it either rained or snowed during most of their games this spring! Boys will be boys so of course they still played most of the games, but I didn't have a chance to take pictures until their final games last Saturday. Noah can't wait to play again in the fall and Ethan has decided to try baseball (is it t-ball at this age?) next year instead. Here are a few pics from the last day.

Some Real Parenting Advice

I just read a really great article on one of my favorite blogs, Light Refreshments Served. We all go to great lengths to ensure our children are physically safe, but what about keeping them morally and spiritually safe? If you have a minute, read this post by Emily Watts (a co-worker of mine, and one of my favorite authors) -- it's a good one.

Parenting Tip #418

If you decide to let your toddler color easter eggs, it's best to check and make sure you grabbed the cooked batch of eggs out of the fridge instead of the raw ones.

And we had a wonderful Easter weekend. Hope you all did too!

Grandparent's Day

Yesterday was Grandparent's Day at Noah's preschool! Noah was so excited to have his grandparents come with him to school. We made cherry chip cupcakes the night before that he wanted to take as his treat and his teacher put the recipe in a special book she made to give to all the grandparents. He got to ride to school in Grandma Brann's car and met Grandma and Grandpa Premo there (unfortunately Grandma and Grandpa Barker couldn't make it.) They all had a special lunch together, eating all of the "favorite lunch treats" that the kids brought (Noah brought his cupcakes), they read books together, played the computer, and Noah got to make a bookmark for each one of his grandparents. What a fun day!

My Workout Companion

Can I just say that I have been so tired this week. The whole daylight savings time has really thrown me for a loop this year and I'm struggling to readjust my schedule! Not only am I physically tired but I've been dieting and exercising for three months now to lose the extra 10 pounds I've put on since Aaron was born and I've lost only three pounds. THREE. So not only am I tired from lack of sleep, but I'm tired of not eating my favorite foods and I'm tired of working out every day and not seeing any results. Am I whining? Yes, sorry. ;)

So this morning when it was time for my usual workout with the Wii "My Fitness Coach" I decided that I just wasn't up for it today. I was going to take a break. As I started fixing my breakfast (instead of working out) Noah picked up on the break from routine asked, "Are you going to exercise with the Wii Mom?" I told him no, that I was too tired today.

I watched him go over, turn on the Wii, and put in a disc. I assumed he decided to play his own game if I wasn't going to use it! The next thing I knew he was setting up his own profile in "My Fitness Coach" then logged in to a Group Workout. He said "Come on Mom. We're doing a group workout together!"

And how could I turn that down?! If my five year old is willing to work out, I figured I better too. I've always heard that if you have a workout partner you're more likely to workout on a regular basis. I guess that's true no matter how young your companion is!

So we had an excellent workout together today, minus the time I spent taking pictures! Thanks Noah, for being my best little buddy and giving me the inspiration to keep going!

The Things We Love

In honor of Valentine's Day we thought we'd share a list of a few things we love. I asked the boys the question, "What five things do you love the most?", and to be honest I expected more off-the-wall answers. But their answers were simple and sweet...just like they are. So, without further ado:

Ethan loves...
1- Pokemon Cards and Toys
2- Froot Loops (he was eating some at the time)
3- Mommy (awwww!)
4- Daddy
5- Aaron and Noah

Noah loves...
1- Going to the park
2- Pokemon
3- Mommy
4- Going to school
5- Playing the Wii

Aaron loves... (Of course he doesn't talk, so his list is based on priorities)
1- Milky-milk (Vitamin D milk in his beloved Nuk sippy cup)
2- Mommy
3- Daddy
4- Little People train
5- Oreos

And what are my favorite five things? I'll explain in pictures:

Happy Valentines Day everyone!

Love,

Sledding at the Cabin

Last weekend we went up to Chad's parents cabin in the Uintah's for a much needed winter break. All of the boys (including Chad) were so excited to spend some time outside playing in the snow. We went for a snowmobile ride then the boys, Chad, and his dad made a sledding hill out behind the back of the cabin--they really caught some air on some of the turns! And I of course stayed where any good summer-lovin' momma should, inside the warm cabin reading a book! ;)

Who, us, irresponsible?!?!

We tried to be responsible this year for Christmas (you have to know that we are ultra-responsible, logical people) so here's what we needed and should have got:

New pots and pans (ours are almost 10 years old), a new computer, or money in the bank towards our yard that we'll have to put in before June 1. But we decided to be irresponsible (gasp!) and with a little talking into on Chad's part we decided to do something fun and get...

A WII! And "wii" have been having so much fun. (Thanks Mom and Ray!)

Christmas Update

We've had a great couple of months and a wonderful Christmas. We spent a lot of time with family, shoveled a lot of snow, and ate plenty of yummy, calorie-laden treats. We had a visit to Temple Square, read stories and scriptures about the birth of our Savior, Jesus Christ, and had special conversations with the boys and also reminded ourselves about the real reason why this was such a special season--I love that they are old enough to finally understand and appreciate that miraculous event.

(Please excuse the date imprint on the pictures, and the fact that
even the dates are wrong. Silly camera.)

We also had a lot of fun. It makes me laugh that Santa always tries to bring an abundance of well-rounded toys and the boys, specifically Ethan and Noah, always focus on one little thing as their favorite. This year their favorite was Pokemon cards (does that surprise anybody?!). Santa brought Ethan a new digital camera, Noah a new Hot Wheels racetrack and Leapster games. Ethan took three or four pictures on Christmas day, Noah just played with his racetrack yesterday for the first time, but ooohhhhh those Pokemon cards! :) And Aaron's favorites were of course those from his Grandma's and Grandpa's (Gs & Gs always pick the best things!), the fun little Lawn Mower and Little People train that he can push around the house. I'm just glad they're happy and are having fun.
