our way back

We took the fastest route back since there would be no pit stop on our way home. We got up early and finished packing up our things and got everything down to the cars and loaded. We lucked out that "the Leader" of the expedition brought a trailer, so we sent the stuff we didn't need back with him. We caravaned across the border and parted ways. We headed over to visit the Perry's in Mesa. They had us travel some small highway. It was fun, but very loopy. I swear the road followed every dune and wash the whole way. The Perry's met us a Chinese buffet and we had a great visit, then we were on our way. We didn't stop until we reached Page later in the evening. We ate dinner at McDonald's and let the kids stretch for a minute before we did the last leg. Did I mention we were trying to get back to Cameron's family reunion? We wanted to be back for church with them in Sterling by 9:00. Fun? I know.

Things were going to plan at this point. It was finally my turn to drive and give Cameron a break. Things were going well between Page and Kanab. We stopped for a brief second and then Cameron was just resting well when I passed the "Kanab 45 miles" sign and my low gas light went off. Yeah, we forgot to get gas in Page. Or I did, anyway. In my panic I woke up Cameron and asked him what to do. By this time we were closer to Kanab, so carried on. I said a lot a prayers at this point, mostly to just get us close enough to walk to the nearest gas station. Blessings seemed to a pouring, because rolled into Kanab just fine. After that, Cameron couldn't sleep, so he took over and got us the rest of the way home. I can't remember what time it was, but it was 2 or later. We put everyone to bed, crashed, and woke up early to make it to church on time. The kicker there was that only two families of the 10 were even there to visit with. The rest rolled out while we were at church. It was raining and miserable, so the headed out to get out the rain. I'm just glad we made it back safe and to all the places we were supposed to be.

Mexico miracles

We prayed a lot while we were on vacation. We were headed to a foreign country with recent unrest and completely new surroundings. We especially prayed when we headed to town which was twice. We never left the resort without a caravan, especially since we had no clue where we were headed. The first trip was by far our most eventful.

We headed in with most of the group to eat at "The Crazy Chicken" (sorry I don't have the spanish version on hand). Everything was going great when we stopped at a stoplight. Immediately we were surrounded by people trying to wash our windows with dirty water, so we didn't notice when the last car was suddenly not behind us as we took off. We went a little further to the restaurant and realized they weren't with us. They being a family of seven with 5 small girls. We immediately sent our "leader" to go and see if he could find them.

It so happened that while were stopped one of the window washers noticed that our friends tire was flat. It also just so happened to be right in front of tire repair shop. Seeing this, Brett got out of his car to try and tell the next family in line what he was doing, but they just thought it was another window washer and didn't pay attention. They got their tire fixed pronto and we were soon eating yummy chicken and relaxing.

After dinner we headed over to what was dubbed "the Mexican Wal-Mart" to check it out and pick up a few things. We had fun browsing, bought some vanilla and pastries and went back to our cars. Here's were things got really fun. When Steve went to start his car it wouldn't start. They thought maybe somebody had siphoned his gas while we were in the store, so they started to try and figure how to get gas. There was a really sweet man that saw our troubles and came over to offer his help. He took them to the gas station and helped the get gas. When it was filled and it didn't start again, he hung around to see what he could do. Best miracle of the trip...He happened to be a mechanic from Mexico city on his way to Tijuana to by a car that he would give a quick fix and take it back home to fix and sell. He and his wife and son were just stopped to buy a few things on their journey.

The other miracle was that we actually went to town that day. Cameron was the only one in the group who could speak Spanish and we weren't going to go until the last minute. Our plan was to just chill out for the night and I suddenly decided to go. If he hadn't been there, even with his poor mechanic Spanish, the car would never have been fixed. We had fuses to fix part of the problem, but the mechanic had a computer to test what was wrong and the starter had gone out. All the shops were closed for the night, but it just so happened that this man had the exact thing we needed in his car to fix that certain model of car. After some serious talking, the man sold it to them and even installed it. They were such a blessing at a time when we needed it most.

We all made it back safely, and the car never had a problem the rest of the trip. We were truly blessed the entire vacation. I'm so glad that we went.

Mexico part 3

The view from our balcony. So pretty.

The way we go to the pool. Umbrella stroller packed with all our extra's and the baby and we were on our way.

Somebody else built this, but my kids got to enjoy

pictures at sunset

I realize that there has to be at least one picture of me, just to prove I was there. Verdict: not even close to cute in a bathing suit.

The pool at night. We went swimming after dark the first and last nights we were in Mexico. Perfect temperature, and the only time we could one of the awesome beds by the pool.

Our goodbye pictures. Nope, none of them made it on the Christmas card, but still fun to have.

{Faith} little boys and prayer

This is my little man. I love him. He drives me crazy and makes me proud. This past fall when things were so very dry, our Stake had a fast for moisture. We discussed this with our kids, hoping that our eldest wouldn't grumble so much if she understood what we were doing. My little man listened in and piped up that he wanted to fast. If it met helping his Grandpa's Herb and Close, as well as uncle Glen and all the farmers in the neighborhood, then he wanted to help. We let him know he wasn't obligated (he was only 6) but we would love him to join us.

His prayers were said, and without a complaint, he willingly fasted for it to rain. It seemed just hours and the weather forecast predicted storms. A few days later when the Heaven's opened, my little boy said, "See Mom. I fasted and Heavenly Father gave us rain. I'm so glad I fasted."

I'm so grateful for that little miracle. That he now knows prayers are answered and someone cares and listens to him. He is so strong and gets stronger everyday. I'm grateful for my little boy. Even when sacrament meeting feels like a bust, I know his seed has been planted and it continues to grow. I'm excited to see who he is growing up to be.

life...

Things have been fun around here. Meaning we are so busy living that the Mom has to let something go, and my poor blog isn't the only thing. But that's okay. You see, we got a new/old computer for a friend, and so I didn't have access to my old pictures, so I never finished blogging about my life and I didn't want to miss that part and just move, so, here we are. That computer crashed and 6 months of my life in pictures is also gone, so I might as well begin again.

Right now I have two kiddo's in school full time and get to spend most of the day with my two little princesses. That means I almost get my laundry done every week and I get to visit my friends a lot more than I used to.  I teach clogging for two hours every Tuesday and have moved into the "let your kids be responsible and walk/ride their bikes around town without me" stage. It's kind of nice and scary at the same time. It's also sad that they are growing up so fast. On that note, my awesome six year can mow my lawn all by himself. I love it when they turn out the be like their Dad. Life is just sweet.

Did I mention we have grass?! Oh, it's a beautiful thing. It's only in the back, but that's okay with me. I'm a little sick of dirt and mud and general messiness. We are currently working on side walk in the front so maybe we can get to grass by next year. (me crossing my fingers, but not letting myself get too hopeful, we have a lot more to do first.)

Well, I'll shove off for now. This week looks like a doozer, so I should probably get some shut eye so I can focus.

Paradise: Day 2

So you may be asking yourself, why are they going to Mexico for vacation and why are they driving? We went to a resort on the top of the Gulf of California (Sea of Cortez) about an a hour and a half from Arizona to a place known as Rocky Point. We were in a caravan of cars once we hit the border, and really I never felt like I was going to be kidnapped or robbed. The ghetto in L.A. is much worse. No drug lords (that I know of) and we were on a secure beach area. So, back to the vaca.

We left Phoenix in the morning and stopped at Wal-Mart to pick up some more water to make sure we had enough. We had to have a chat with our children in the van when we got back about not being at home any more and how important it is to stay with their parents because we no longer knew anyone! They were giving us a heart attack and the thought of not "being in Kansas anymore" gave us some heart palpitations. We then traveled on to the lovely little town of Why, AZ to meet up with our group and by car insurance for our stay across the border. The farther we went the hotter it got.
Awesome cactus forest.

Crossing the border. Bye bye home.

Welcome to Mexico!

It was fairly uneventful out the Resort. There really wasn't much there, just a lot of desert. We were glad we were driving with friends in case there was any problems.

Check-in was a process, but we finally got to our room. It's amazing what the bell-boys can pack on those carts. It was incredible. We lucked out getting the first room on the first floor because we had the youngest child there (Thanks Monte!) and had a perfect view of the sea and an awesome deck. It took us a while to get everything situated and put away and we didn't make it to go swimming until it was already dark, but the kids didn't even notice.

The next day was Sunday and we were nervous to try and find the Branch in town because we had no idea where to go and no one to go with us. We found out later the only family we didn't talk to ended up going in. We told our kids we weren't going to play in the water but would go for a walk down at the beach. We stayed dry for a little while and then the waves "suddenly started to go over our heads." Whatever, I did try.

Poor Alice still wasn't feeling great and fell asleep everywhere. Beach, pool, shoulders, floatation devices...it was great. She crashed while we were out on our walk/soak. That night we had some friends over to play games and had a blast.

On our way to paradise: Day 1

Don't laugh, but we went our first "vacation" this past June. Now, don't get me wrong, we really do go places with our kids and have fun, but they usually involve mountains and four-wheelers and occasionally a trip northward. When Cameron came home from work and told me he'd been invited to go to Mexico with some guys from work I really thought he was going to say no. I was in complete shock when he was the one being gung-ho about it. Who would have thunk it. So away we went. We spent several months getting everything ready and, despite our flooding adventure, made it out the door on Friday June 10th.

We took the scenic route down 89 and up over the Kaibab and then over Marble Canyon. The kids were troopers. Especially when traffic slowed to a measly 35 mph in construction and there was no place to eat until Flagstaff. :( Instead of a tiny 9 inch DVD system where only two kids could see it, we purchased a 19 inch flat screen, made a stand to go in between the front seats and hooked it up to a DVD player and power converter and our kids rode in style.
First picture out. Notice James and Emma strategically placed where they couldn't touch anyone and Hannah in the back to take care of the baby.

Picture on Marble Canyon Bridge overlooking the Colorado River. This is where Emma decides she has to go potty and there isn't one on this side of the Canyon, so we have to turn around and go over the bridge to find one.

We went on to Phoenix for the night so it wasn't the whole 13 hours in one shot. We were a little annoyed at the La Quinta because they ended up not having a crib for Alice so we got stuck in a King room with the 3 kids on the pull out sleeping sideways so they fit and Alice in bed with us. She had a fever for the first few days, so it was a ruff night.
