Fahrenheit 451

I finished Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury last night. I LOVED this book. I didn't read it in high school like a lot of other kids. I decided to read it because everyone else seems to have read it, except me, and with good reason. It is an exceptional book. It really has sustenance for our day and age. No one is trying to burn books here, but they people are turning to television more and more. The "family" reminds me of how enthralled we all are with reality TV. Everyone is looking for an instant high and satisfaction. No one knows the joy of reading a good long book. People are murdering because it's fun. It was a horrible world to be living in, but it shows that there is always hope. Even in the end when devestation hits, Montag and his new found friends find a silver lining. They know they must get the books out to people who have been looking for them all along, they just didn't know what they were looking for.

Lord of the Flies

I finished Lord of the Flies by William Golding. It was a great book. Wonderfully written, exciting, but very, very disturbing. I wondered while reading it if the TV show Lost was slightly based on Lord of the Flies. Honestly, I suck at this review thing. I suggest reading it though. I loved toward the end when Ralph kept having the curtain close in his mind. It made me think of times when I get so swept up in something I forget who I am and what I am about.

Mere Christianity

I do not really know what to write in review of this book. C.S. Lewis wrote it during the 2nd World War. It originally was a series of radio addresses that he later compiled into a book and changed a little to make more sense for a novel. He was trying to explain how Christianity is the way to go and if you are a "true" christian, you will be a good person. It had some wonderful and inspiring chapters in the book, whether you believe in God or not. I especially liked the chapter about Hope. I would suggest this book to all. It had wonderful messages, but by no means is an easy or fast read. It took me a long time to read and isn't really a page turner. I enjoyed it, but would have enjoyed it more had I also been reading a more exciting book at the same time.

The Life and Words of Martin Luther King, Jr.

I read The Life and Words of Martin Luther King, Jr. by Ira Peck. Monday and Yesterday to remember the amazing man. It is a Scholastic Biography, so it was written for kids, but the message is still the same. What an amazing man he was. He did so many things for our country and we are still benefiting from them. Yesterday was a very important day in the history of our country. The first person that wasn't a white male was sworn in as our next president. While I didn't vote for him, I still see it as an inspiring occurrence for our country and for our children. This event may not have happened if it wasn't for Dr. King. His message was a fantastic one and one that we all should adhere to, if the need to protest ever happened. He believed in nonviolence. All of his protests were nonviolent and he taught others to do the same way. He lived in a time of so much conflict and hatred, and yet he was able to rise above it. He had a dream, and I believe his dream is coming true. Praise to that man!

My first book for 2009

I am starting out the year by reading Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis. He is an amazing author as you all know and has penned the amazing Narnia series. I would also love to read The Screwtape Letters by him sometime this year too. Here is the synopsis of the book from the Barnes and Noble website:
A forceful and accessible discussion of Christian belief that has become one of the most popular introductions to Christianity and one of the most popular of Lewis's books. This unabridged audio edition, read by Geoffrey Howard, uncovers common ground upon which all Christians can stand together.Read by Geoffrey Howard.
I am excited to read this book and have heard it is really good, so hopefully soon I will have my review for you all.

The Count of Monte Cristo by Alexander Dumas ***

This book started out very interesting. I really like the characters and truly felt for Edmond Dantes. As the book continued and he became the Count of Monte Cristo and arrived in Paris, I got a little lost. There were so many sub stories, I found it hard to follow. I couldn't remember who was who. In the end though it picked up again and I enjoyed it. I stayed up late the past two nights to finish it and find out what happened. It was a fun read, but one I would not want to read again. I give it a ***. I am trying to figure out how to put a picture of the book on here, so give me some time to work on the kinks.

My newest blog

This blog is mainly for me. I do not know if anyone will read it, but my goal this year is to read and read lots! What better way to track it then to blog. I got the idea from my friend Katie. This blog will be about books I have read, am reading or am asking wether or not I should read. I will have a star system for books I have read, 5 *'s being the highest and 0 *'s being the lowest.
