Couple of weeks ago, Edna and I was at the Tuesday evening prayer meeting at Riverwalk. The prayer meeting was filled with people. What stuck with me for that prayer meeting was this verse Pastor Chee Kiang shared.
"that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love" - Ephesians 3:17
There are 2 parts to it. That Christ can dwell in our hearts through faith. Why is it through faith? Can it be via reasoning? So... what is faith?
"Now faith is the subtance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen." - Hebrews 11:1
The main thing that stuck to my heart was the 2nd part. "... that you, being rooted and grounded in love..." The idea of being rooted and grounded. Why rooted and grounded at the same time? Aren't the two the same? Rooted is defined as firmly implanted, and grounded can be defined as to place on a foundation (in online dictionary). The double emphasis to being firmly planted in love.
Christ represents love. The following verses of Ephesians 3:18-19 talk about the size of the love of Christ. To me, verse 17 in this context, spoke about being grounded in Christ. The Lord impressed upon me the importance of being grounded in Christ. Through the times when I feel down, when I face persecutions, when I face difficulties.... like a tree in a howling storm, blown by winds of circumstances, struck by bolts of emotional struggles... yet because the roots are deeply grounded in Christ, that tree will survive.
Why does God allow this kind of winds to blow at that tree? Why can't God provide just loads of sun shine and water for the tree to grow strong and big? Does He send the winds of persecutions so that the tree can be tested? And when the tree gets through that set of wind, the roots are strengthed? Will He allow this hurling hurricane which the tree cannot bear come down on the tree? Or will he use various winds to build the roots of the tree?
