Arizona Day 3- Oatman, AZ

Oatman is an unincorporated community and census-designated place (CDP) in the Black Mountains of Mohave CountyArizona, United States, located at an elevation of 2,710 feet (830 m). It began as a small mining camp when two prospectors struck a $10 million gold find in 1915, though the vicinity had already been settled for a number of years. Oatman's population grew to more than 3,500 in the course of a year. As of the 2020 census, its population was 102.

The picture of Olive Oatman at the top of the building shows her tattooed chin.

"The name Oatman was chosen in honor of Olive Oatman, a young Illinois girl who was captured and enslaved by Indians, probably from the Tolkepayas tribe, during her pioneer family's massacre while on their journey westward in 1851. She was later sold or traded to the Mohave people, who adopted her and tattooed her face in the custom of the tribe. She was released in 1856 at Fort Yuma."

Arizona Day 3 - Lake Havasu

We packed a lot into day 3 because we decided to drive on home that night. I have always wanted to see London Bridge in Lake Havasu so we headed down that direction. After we enjoyed seeing the London Bridge we headed up to Oatman which is about 38 miles north of Lake Havasu. We were definitely having some nicer weather by now, but it was still windy. It is always fun to see some new things and we did enjoy this very much.

Driving across the bridge

London Bridge is a bridge in Lake Havasu City, Arizona. When it was built in the 1830s, it spanned the River Thames in London, England. In 1968, the bridge was purchased from the City of London by Robert P. McCulloch. McCulloch had exterior granite blocks from the original bridge cut and transported to the United States for use in the construction of a new bridge in Lake Havasu City, a planned community he established in 1964 on the shore of Lake Havasu. The Arizona bridge is a reinforced concrete structure clad in the original masonry of the 1830s bridge. The bridge was completed in 1971 (along with a canal), and links an island in the Colorado River with the main part of Lake Havasu City. The "rededication" of the London Bridge took place on October 10, 1971

Arizona Day 3

Part of the Route 66 museum consisted of old electric cars. It was sure interesting to see the old electric cars as you will see in the pictures below.

Custer Chair Cars

This is actor Andy Devine who was born in Flagstaff, but raised in Kingman. Part of Route 66 has been renamed for him.

Very humbling pictures of what so many went through at this time just looking for a better life for their families.
