Looking forward to 2011

The rest of the week we have been relaxing.

The day after

The next day after Sunday school we hosted Tom’s side of the family. After some rodents ruined Uncle Frank, Aunt Charlotte’s & baby Zachary’s arrival it seemed pretty bleak. We had all been looking forward to their visit for weeks. But then everyone else started arriving. First Grandma & Grandpa, Jenny, Uncle Jeff, Aunt Kathy, Christopher & Lisa. We had a super fun day filled with laughter and silliness as always with this crew.

In fact we were having such a fun time I forgot to pick up the camera again.

Holiday weekend 2010 was everything we could have hoped it to be. How very blessed we are to have all been together.

Happy Christmas

Christmas morning arrived early for Annabelle & me. She came to my bedside at 4am, asking if Santa had been there. Asking if there were gifts for her. I convinced her it was too dark to tell but she could stay with me until it was light. She asked me every 10 minutes if it was morning yet until 5:30. We both dozed back off until Nate woke us at 8am yelling “Happy Christmas” through the monitor.

She was *thrilled* to see her much anticipated dollhouse along with a note from Santa telling her what a good girl she had been.

Nate just immediately went into the train zone, where he has been much of the time since.

Nate was not happy that I pulled him away from the train table to attempt pictures in their matchy pj’s. He would not cooperate one bit; even though this was over 3 hours later he was still a man on a mission.

Later Karen & Kurt, Josh, Mandy & Jeremy joined us for a lovely afternoon & evening. The godfathers immediately joined in on the train fun.

While Mandy & Annabelle rearranged the dollhouse. It was wonderful to have all the kids together playing so nicely.

After that, the house was so cluttered I couldn’t pick up the camera again. It was a long, wonderful day.

Aunt Stacie’s gifts arrived a few days early so I told the kids they could open them now, thinking they might be a little overwhelmed on Christmas Day. Nate couldn’t get the paper off fast enough.

Annabelle refused. You see, she had some issues this holiday season. After reading a Dora Christmas book where Swiper was on the Naughty List and wasn’t going to get any gifts she convinced herself she wouldn’t be getting any either. There was a small incident at school where the teacher had to talk to her (again) about hiding some of her favorite items. No big deal, it was addressed and let go. Except by Annabelle. She fretted about it for days. To the point of saying “just take the tree down, I don’t even want Christmas to come. I know only Nate is going to get gifts”. No matter how many different ways several of us tried to explain she would get gifts, there was no convincing Annabelle. So her gift from Aunt Stacie sat. Her one ace in the hole, in case there was no gifts for her to open Christmas morning.

Oh my dear child. You have the reasoning skills of an adult and the emotions of a 3 year old. I just don’t know what to do with you sometimes.

The tree farm

Later in the day of the cookie bake-off, Karen & Kurt took Annabelle to the Christmas tree farm to help them pick a tree.

As always, my girl had to break out in dance.

There was much elfing around.

The cookie bake off

We didn’t have our usual crew for the cookie bake-off this year, but that didn’t stop us from spending the entire Sunday before Christmas baking about a dozen different kinds of cookies.

Kurt is always in charge of buckeyes, Annabelle likes to help him with that.

Mom & I made our favorite Sugar Plums.
(I promise I only wear overalls around the house)

It’s a long day but it sure is fun.

Note to self:
Self. Take pictures of all the cookies next year.

Fun in the country

We had so much fun at Overly’s this year, we went twice.

We also learned our lesson – go.after.Christmas.

The first time we went to see the lights we waited in line over an hour. The second time a few days after Christmas we sailed right in.

It was worth it both times.

Once again a kind soul agreed to take our family picture at the entrance. Nate was a bit anxious to get in and not so much about the posing. I was too busy envying the woman’s coat, it was so super cool.

Nate was totally transfixed by the large train display.

Both kids *loved* the outdoor, fast running riding train.

And getting their pictures in the train cutout.

We went on a wagon ride which gave us another fabulous view of the millions of lights, plus allowing us to see some of the hidden things behind the buildings.

The bonfire was great; Annabelle was being silly and wouldn’t keep her tongue in her mouth.

She also had a big story to tell Nana about how the fire was built. It didn’t really make sense as it involved a princess, a jack-o-lantern and a flying elf.

When a strolling band went by, both kids broke out in dance.

They are both already asking when we can go back again.

The Mall

First we went to the mall to ride the train. The look on Nate’s face looks so serious, almost sad, but it is neither of those things. When Nate is on a train he is in the zone. He goes beyond the smiley happy child of usual, he goes almost trancelike.

After the kids rode the train they were having fun trying to catch the popcorn that was projected on the floor. There was dancing, hopping and lots of giggling.

Annabelle ran into one of her friends from music class and they wanted to ride the train together, so they did. Nate at this point was over the mall, over the train and wanted to leave. Once Nate has had his lunch he goes into nap mode, so Nate & I sat this one out while the girls had their fun.
Neither child would talk to Santa. He was pretty cool too, but they wouldn’t do it.

The Holiday Minute

Oh children of the future, I want to tell you all about this. I want to tell you what a wonderful holiday season 2010 turned out to be, despite our time constraints. Mommy was away during the week all this month for work so we had to fit our holiday time in when we could. I think we did OK; you sure seemed to have fun. I know I loved every minute watching you enjoy all the merriment of the season.

I wanted to get all this in our yearbook. I always want to remember this time in our lives.
So here you go, in a secession of posts because I can never get the pictures to line up correctly on the big ones.

I give you holiday 2010.

3 Pumpkins

This was the best of the bunch, even at that no one wanted to cooperate. But we had fun. Lots of fun. Even when Mommy had to take both kids into a port-a-john (worst fears realized), even when we had a scary few minutes in the corn maze, even when the fire trucks all blew their horns on the way out, we had fun. I mean, there was homemade ice-a-cream, how could it not be good?

Cozy Pillow

I was taking a picture of these pajamas the other night and didn’t realize until I looked on the camera that Nate was clutching his “Cozy Pillow”. It is such an appendage all day and night I don’t even see it anymore.

About 4 months ago I was putting him down for a nap and he said “I need a pillow” (pronounced pill-woah). I remembered I had Annabelle’s first bed pillow in her closet and went to get it for him. He had never seen it before and I still wonder why all of a sudden he felt the need for a pillow, but whatever. He immediately hugged it and stated “Nate’s cozy pillow” and lay down to sleep. Upon awakening he insisted on bringing it downstairs and so it started.

Nate has Cozy Pillow in his hand or at least in the same room with him constantly. We established a rule that Cozy Pillow does not leave the house unless we are going away overnight, but that doesn’t keep him from asking every single time we are on our way out the door. He crawls up in his booster seat at mealtimes, leans forward and says “Cozy Pillow peas” and we put it behind his back. Sometimes he will be in the middle of playing and look around until he connects with Cozy Pillow, then he will toddle over, give it a cuddle while saying “Comfy, Cozy Pillow”, then return to his activity.

Washing it is a challenge. Once I tried to do it while he was awake by explaining “Cozy pillow needs a bath” but he fretted so much for that hour that now I take my chances while he is sleeping. Some nights I have to check 2 or 3 times until he is in a position that I can extract it from his clutches without waking him.

I will admit at age 38 I still sleep with the toddler size pillow my Nana made for my crib. While I have spent several nights of my life without it, I think I sleep much better when it is present. So this I get. Life is just a little easier when you have a Comfy Cozy Pillow in which to lay your head.

Autumn Fun

We are still recovering from October.

October is our busy season. “We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that. Reverse it.”

We spent the second weekend of the month on the go.

Saturday was Trick or Treating at HalloBoo! Our favorite Story Book Forest turned into a non-scary Halloween setting.

Aunt Karen went with Nana, Mom, Snow White and Prince Charming to spend a warmer than normal (or necessary) day at the park. We trick or treated with the Storybook characters. The kids and Karen did their favorite “pumpkin dancing” in Peter Peter Pumpkin Eater’s house. We made our own S’Mores. Of course Nate’s favorite activity, riding the train. Other than Nate wanting to and almost taking a dive into the purple fountain we all agreed it was just the best day. Fun, relaxed and guaranteed to wear everyone out.

Sunday dawned bright and warm again so we headed to the mountains. The annual Autumnfest celebration at a ski resort we enjoy so much. Beautiful leaves on the drive, wonderful food at the buffet and great company. We met Aunt Karen & Kurt, Jeremy & Josh with Mandy to spend a family day celebrating the latter 3’s birthday on the 13th.

The kid’s favorite activity was running the hay maze. Annabelle rode a horse and jumped in a bouncy house. I finally got all to sit still moment to capture a cousin picture.

Another fun fall day.

A horse named Duck

Duck the horse
Originally uploaded by kristn1284
I expound my theory about how you either become your parents or the opposite of your parents when it comes to certain traits to anyone that will listen. Usually I mean things like how you keep your house or your grocery shopping habits. Today it is about horses.

I find no redeeming value in a horse. Maybe 100 years ago they served a purpose but today if I want to get from point A to B I will ride a car or bike that does not turn around and bite. That’s just my personal opinion. I don’t like a horse. I don’t choose a horse. Truthfully I’m a bit afraid of a horse. A trait my Nathaniel seems to have inherited.

Not Annabelle. Annabelle loves horses. She gravitates to them in person and in books. Especially white ones. She climbs up in the saddle with the biggest smile on her face and rides regally as if she was born on a ranch.

Last week at our family autumn fest outing there was an opportunity to ride a horse. She spent some time talking to the white horse named Duck through the fence before going in, waiting until he was over his break. As soon as he was ready she was first in line.
I’ll admit to some trepidation when the woman invited me in to take pictures. I stood a good distance away and used the zoom, but still I captured that moment of pure happiness for my daughter.

Nate waited far away with the rest of the family. Anytime whoever was holding him would take a few steps toward the horse ring he would proclaim “No horse, No horse!” Now that I get, really get.

Annabelle’s love of a horse I don’t get. But it doesn’t matter. She is the opposite of me when it comes to this trait. Proving my theory true once again.

Pumpkin picking – Divide & conquer

Annabelle had a field trip at a local Pumpkin Patch. We had fun with her class then took the opportunity to purchase our pumpkins for this year. The easiest way to do was to split up the duties.

Nate was in charge of heavy lifting (Tom makes this exact face when picking up something weighty)

------------------------And inspection------------------------

-----------------And taste testing---------------------

Annabelle was in charge of finding our lucky white pumpkin for the season.

----------And small pumpkin selection-----------

------------------And entertainment-------------------

Teamwork netted us 2 large, 2 small and 1 white pumpkin.

Children's Museum

Niece, cousin, Godmother Jenny & I took the kids to the Children’s Museum 2 weeks ago. It was the last day to see the Curious George exhibit that had been installed all summer. The kids loved it. I was *better* than I thought I would be about them touching everything (I only sprayed their hands twice with anti-bacterial mist) and due to either good immunities or lack of bugs that day neither one got sick.

Their first interest was this wall in the Mr. Rogers area that had 26 doors, one for each letter of the alphabet. Behind each door was a shadow box filled with items represented by that letter. The B one had a Bunny, Barrette, Ball, etc. Well Mr. Nate can open and shut doors all day if we let him, but eventually other kids wanted to play so we moved on.

There was a peg board that when you touched it the pegs indented so you could put your handprint or whatever on it. The pegs came out the other side. There were little kids on the other side pushing them back, which seemed to freak both kids out. How were these pegs magically popping back up? Jenny picked up Nate so he could play at the top without others interfering. Then he really liked it.

Annabelle loved the grocery scale; I found a new job for her when we go shopping. Who knew?

Nate was so into the peg board area. He just kept taking them out of one and putting them into another. I kept hearing Annabelle’s Montessori teacher in my head saying “if they are engaged in an activity don’t interrupt”. So as much as I wanted to say “Come on, let’s go do something fun” I let him go for a long time putting pegs from one board to another.

They had a Smart Car on display. I was surprised at how Annabelle walked right up to it, opened up the gas cap, placed the gas nozzle in the tank and stood there with her hand on her hip. I had no idea she was so closely observing me the million times I have pumped gas with her in the car. I wondered if she will have to do this for real in her lifetime or if by the time she drives we will just be plugging cars in at night.

The line to meet Curious George was at least 30 minutes, so we opted to keep playing and just get a picture with the statue. Nate liked beating on his head.

Then we came upon the train table. Discussion over, Nate is done exploring anything else the rest of the day. For as much as I kept thinking we didn’t have the room I don’t think there is a way I can not get him one for Christmas.

It was a really great day. The kids are wild about spending time with Jenny and so am I.

Besties

This post started out because I wanted to remember the first picture, it makes me smile. I *thought* Nana & Nate were reading a book while I put Annabelle to bed. When I came to fetch him for his bedtime routine I found them cuddled on the couch watching TV. Mom looked at me ½ guilty and said “Nate wanted to watch the Simpsons”. Another special treat with Nana, Mom says no TV in the evening, Nana lets you watch a completely inappropriate cartoon if you happen upon it while turning to the weather channel. What else could I do but laugh?

The more I thought about what to write, the more I thought about the special role she has played in their lives.

Nate is completely a Nana’s boy. I mean Annabelle & Nana are like peas & carrots but Nate and Nana; well those two just have a special bond. Always have.

My Mom retired when Annabelle was born so she could keep her while we worked. 6 months later she moved in. Neither child remembers a time when Nana wasn’t there. Even with my occasional travel, Tom’s long work hours and varying shifts the kids are content & secure. There is a constant, there is Nana.

I often feel an overwhelming appreciation for the relationships my children have with my Mom. I know I am so very blessed. I know they are so very blessed.

These pictures are just a snapshot of their daily interactions. A great deal of time spent reading & playing, with an occasional interjection of something you only get away with when you have Nana.
