Fun with Cousins

Meeting Nannie

Gracie got to meet her Nannie this week. She was all smiles and coos every time Nannie was around.

(I am almost positive that Nannie will be furious with me for posting these pictures. Her hair is not "done".)

I realized that I have a picture of Gracie and Jonah at almost the same age, in the same chair, with their Nannie.

Unfortunately, I don't have one of Gracie like this...

Hangin' with the boys

I finally got my act together enough to coordinate some play-dates. It's the first time Jonah's been with all his boys since May! We met them at a splashpad this morning, and I could tell it had been long overdue. The boys were running in all directions, soaking wet, and happy as a pig in mud.

In fact, Jonah DID find some mud, and I dragged him away just before he rolled in it. I did not catch him, however, before he dropped his drawers and peed in the splashpad, his white hiney in plain view of everyone. This, apparently, is what happens when Gracie gets hungry and I'm not watching Jonah every second.

He behaved well, aside from the public nudity.

Jonah spent quite a while convincing Lester to get in the water. They chased each other around the palm trees, up and down the stairs, over the lion statues, but Lester would NOT follow Jonah into the water. Eventually his mom walked him into the fountains and got his hands wet...and then he spent the rest of the playdate saying, "Becky! Look at me! I'm wet!" We love Lester so much :)

The boys were famished after about an hour and a half, so we walked over to Johnny Rockets. That poor wait staff had no idea what was coming. Four moms, three strollers, two tiny babies, and four 2 to 3 year old boys. It actually went pretty smoothly, considering!

Gracie wasn't sure what to think about the boys. She cried off and on the whole time, because she was hot, the sun was too bright, she was hungry then tired, and the boys were loud. But the result of Jonah being out of the house and playing with his friends was rewarding enough that I wasn't even phased by Gracie's grumps. It was a fun day.

Big Boy & Little Girl

I can't believe how much Jonah has changed since he started preschool. He's such a little man. Here's what he's been up to lately...

  • It suddenly matters to him what shirt he's wearing, and he will change clothes at LEAST five times every day. He always asks, "you help me button me up?" and all shirts must be buttoned all the way to the top or major melt downs ensue. In addition to that, all shorts must match exactly. Red shorts with red shirts. Matchy-matchy! No more khaki shorts for this kid.
  • He started asking me how things work, when before he was content to describe things to me. I'm going to have to brush up on my tractor/truck studies.
  • He started singing on pitch! Suddenly the Twinkle Rap became the Twinkle theme. In fact, he's driving his four-wheeler around the kitchen right now singing "Jesus loves the little Daddies".
  • He gets embarrassed now. I noticed when Christel and Kak were visiting, and Jonah got in trouble while they were in the room. It broke my heart!
  • Here's the big one. Drum roll, please....he's potty trained. Poop and all. Thank you Jesus.
SUPER POOPER

Gracie's been smiling a lot lately, she's making more sounds, and has outgrown all her newborn clothes and diapers. She adores bath/shower time. I can see pure bliss on her face when she's in the water...

Conversations with my kids

While Aunts Kathleen and Christel were visiting here last month, Kathleen made some playdough for Jonah. He sat with Kathleen at the kitchen table and cut out shapes with my cookie cutters while Christel and I listened from the living room. They were using my valentine cookie cutter when I overheard,
"Oh nooooo! Dixie breakin' my heart!"
(Dixie is our jack russell "terror")

I've had a running commentary from the back seat of my car for a couple of years now. I love hearing Jonah's description of the things he sees while we drive around Arizona. For example, there's a church being built near our house. It has a dome that has been under construction for a month now. Every time we drive past it, I hear about that "bird cage".

Jonah: "Mama, what is that?"
Me: "That is a humidifier."
Jonah: "A herrid flower?"
Me: "A humid-i-fier"
Jonah: "Mama, fire will burn you."

Yesterday, in the car, I heard Jonah hollering across the backseat, "Gracie! Stop stankin' me!" I figured out eventually that she was pooping and he was grossed out by the smell.
