August 2003

(I had another post of Matthew and JoBecka with my original birthday posts, but it somehow got lost in cyberspace, so I try again.)

Upstairs Dog

Martha's (upstairs) boyfriend's doggie.
"Things" were dropping down upon us but
Martha finally put a covering over the
landing floor so we are now "protected."

This shows how all the homes are built
up in the mountains. You see how they
look blue--Blue Ridge Mountains.

No Church?

Church was cancelled today due to the
snow????? Well, I guess it was worse
in the mountains. We just finished driving
around to a couple of people who were
going to come but we couldn't contact
them by phone--and it was a little slick
on the straight up driveways. In NC the
snow plows drop small rocks on the freeway
as their solution to snowy roads. You can
imagine what that means when a car
whizzes past--small rocks flying everywhere,
into the windshields, etc. We were hit, but luckily
not cracked.

West to Tennessee

On Friday we were able to visit Donna Scruggs
who lives on the top of a mountain. You remember
our tales of trying to visit previously--hiking in,
worrying about being shot at by her husband's
relatives and maybe even her husband, etc.
This is the view from her home looking west
toward Tennessee. It is a lovely view, even in
the winter. The mountains look blue here--all
the time. Maybe that is where the Blue Ridge
Mountans name comes from.

Catherine cuts her hair....

Catherine donated about 10 inches of her hair to Locks of Love today.  Here is the after shot....(complete with siblings who must be in the picture too...of course).

Aforementioned Confederate Flag

Sinister Signs

After visiting a friendly older
couple who invited us in to their home,
we continued down the road to the end
and found this and other unfriendly signs.
These postings coupled with the fact that
there was a Confederate Flag flying over
the house, seemed like good reasons not
to proceed further.

Herd of Goats

Today as we were driving along one
of the roads we saw this herd of goats
in a field by the road. Now, we know you
have all seen goats before, but I had never
seen so many in one group. You see their
long horns. The black goat in the middle
was the largest.

Brandon

Brandon on the left. He is
a bright little fellow. He told us
he taught himself the multiplication
tables. Chum See said he got some
award for being the smartest kid
in math and is on an elevated grade
level in his math skills.

Birthday Party

Chum See invited us to their
restaurant this evening for a
birthday party for her son, Ric, who is four.
Chum See is to the right of center and on her
left is her husband, Wen Jiang. Down in
the very left corner is Catherine, the woman
who tends Ric, day and night. All the other
people there are children of Catherine who
has ten children, or children of the other baby
sitters who tend Brandon. Chum See and Wen
are only with their children for a few hours
each week.
