2016

These are my top 9 *most-liked* instagram posts of this year. We had a lot of good times! Looking back at the whole year, it's really hard to believe how much happened in just one year!

At the beginning of 2016 we were just starting to look into the slight possibility of Collin switching jobs. I don't think we even really started talking about it as a "maybe we could do this" type thing until March. Before that, we talked about it from time to time but it was mostly like, "if you did, which you probably won't." But by April/ May the decision was made. Totally leaving education for the time being and entering a new world as a human relations manager.... at a dairy company!

At the beginning of 2016 we were still waiting on Elan's adoption to finalize. We had been told they really wanted to get it done by his first birthday... but that came and went with nothing. Finally we were able to get that done in Montana in May. Our family trip to Missoula for that was so fun! It will always be a great memory.

Of course another great event of 2016 was our little family getting to attend the temple together for Elan to be sealed to us. What a special moment. We loved having so many friends and family over afterwards for his blessing and lunch as well. Wow that really feels like it was SO much longer ago than it was!

In June we sold our Boise house! We had been renting out for 2 years, and had some renters that did NOT take very good care of it. Then a renter that did NOT pay. We finally got good renters in, and I really think how nicely they kept it and decorated it helped it sell quickly! Being landlords from a distance was not easy or fun, and we were very grateful that it sold and sold for enough that we not only broke even like we had originally hoped to, but even made some money on it!

We had some fun trips this year, like Midway for spring break, a week-long trip to Utah in June, Idaho Falls for the 4th of July, and then Idaho Falls again for Jodee's wedding and for Thanksgiving. We had our family reunion at the cabin near Lava Hot Springs, and took a couple of day trips to Tremonton to visit cousins. We also made trips to Utah for Alex's wedding and during Christmas break. I had fun visiting Idaho Falls on my own to judge their Sonatina Competition, and we made lots of trips to Boise to visit friends and watch wrestling throughout the year! We made it out for one camping trip too, which was interesting and freezing but also a great experience, especially since we had Auntie Andrea along.

Ashlyn started kindergarten... which was a big step for our family! Having a kid in school every day is sure a game changer!

In June I went in for a routine OBGYN checkup and later in July they confirmed that I had a 16 cm ovarian cyst that needed to be removed as soon as possible.... which meant surgery just 3 weeks later. We had a really rocky start to our fall with all of that. The surgery had complications in which they tore my bowel in a couple of places and then I had an adverse reaction called "ileus" in which my entire digestive system shut down for about 6 days. It was a torturous hospital stay to put it mildly. Recovering at home continued to be difficult, and after I'd been home a few days I began a long battle with pretty severe anxiety. Recovering both mentally and physically was a long process. I faked it a lot when I didn't think I could make it. I'm still working through that, 6 months later. September, October, and into November are sort of a blur of mental difficulties to me. I did a lot of stuff when I felt completely awful, and worked through a lot of things with both medication and counseling. I had a lot of support from my family and a few close friends, which was so life saving. I really tried my hardest to still make things like Halloween good for my kids even though I could care less and it actually sent me into a panic. BUT..... I could go on and on about all that, I'll save it for another time. :) Looking back I'm proud that I pushed through a lot of times when I seriously sometimes didn't think I could. I also really often wanted to just go to bed and never get up. Once when I was dealing with yet another medication that was making things worse, the nurse asked me on the phone if I was suicidal, and I paused and thought about it for quite a while. I know I wasn't really at that point yet, but I really did feel like I couldn't handle all of it much longer. I was starting to wonder. I remember that because now it's almost hard to remember what I truly felt like... but I know it was hard. I'm blessed that I can't remember that feeling as much now. And didn't I say I was going to be done talking about this? Ok I will be for reals now. Maybe I'll write more on that later.

We had a great Christmas at our own home. I was still working through mental issues but doing much better by then. I was actually thankful that the Christmas season gave me so much to be engaged in, and helped me to focus on others and my family. Ashlyn totally loved all things Christmas this year, and it was really fun. We got a decent amount of snow in December and had 2 snow days before Christmas break!

Anyway, those are about our highlights of 2016. A year to remember for sure!

Tuesday

December!

December! We are still adjusting to having actual Christmas at our own house. Married for 11 years and 8 of those Christmases were spent at one of our parents' houses. . . it has taken some adjusting to figure out what we want to do and what works for us! We're still figuring it out. But it gets better every year! This year we stayed home for Christmas and took a trip to Utah a few days after, and stayed over New Years weekend. It was WEIRD for Collin to not have a big break since he's not working at a school anymore, but he took plenty of days off and had a few days off, so it was pretty good.

Our Christmas countdown!

I had Ashlyn skip school so we could take a day trip to Boise to visit friends the first Friday in December. So glad we went then because the weather got pretty crazy not long after that! We love these friends so much and the kids played hard. Poor Elan had a double ear infection (I didn't know it yet) so he was a little more sad than usual, but he trooped pretty well too.

A huge thing!! Our new table and chairs were finally done and we got to start using them! Collin got them for me in June with the idea of it being my birthday present. Which was AWESOME! It just took us .... 5 months longer than we thought to get them finished. But I LOVE them! It has been awesome having this bigger and nicer table and chairs!!!

Before and After!

Cold enough for hats! Any time Ashlyn puts hers on for school, Elan of course has to do the same. :)

We got some snow! Not enough to have to fully bundle them up before they went outside! Elan liked it more than I thought he would.

Look at Elan's "just woke up" face! So cute.

My little buddy. He cries for 2 seconds every single time we drop Ashlyn off at school. (which is 5 days a week!) And when we pull into the pick up line he starts saying "Sashlyn! Sashlyn!", he's so excited to have her back. I'm so glad to have his sweet little company with me in the mornings, and we have fun together.

Collin turned 38! Downhill to 40 from here! Yikes! :) I had to teach the evening of his birthday but had a 30 minute break in which we quickly had dinner and ice cream cake. Then he got to bathe the kids and put them to bed. Happy birthday, honey! He's such a good guy. The storms we have been through have brought us closer together, and remind me all the time how blessed I am to have him as my partner in everything. I sure married up!

The night after Collin's birthday we DID do something fun! Double date with our friends Tara and Cory Musgrave. We went to Red Robin (yikes-- NOT very impressed with the Twin Falls R.R.! frowny face) and then bowling. Which I somehow won! Probably my best bowling game ever! Anyway, we love the Musgraves and it was fun to spend the evening laughing together.

Ward Christmas party... and Elan's first visit to Santa! He was really not to sure about it! Oh that face! I just want to pick him up and snuggle him just looking at it!

Ashlyn, on the other hand, knows all about how important Santa is. She was thrilled to see him!

Ashlyn had made a really fancy sticker picture for Santa at home earlier that day, but when we got to the church she couldn't find it and thought she had left it at home. (and was so sad.) But later after her first visit with him I found it in the bottom of my bag! When she took it in to him it was a cute moment. Right when she was leaving she turned back around and said, "I love you, Santa!" And ran back to give him one more big hug. She sure has a gift of sharing her love with others.

These 3 were a "wise family" in the little Christmas pageant they put on at the ward party. I played the piano for the songs so I dodged that bullet, ha ha! But I about died when I saw the little costumes for the kids. So so cute! Ashlyn was really reverent in her part as a wise man (woman? person?). She just sat there kneeling quietly looking at the baby Jesus that Mary was holding. (it was a real newborn baby) I found out later from Collin that she thought it was the real baby Jesus! So sweet.

I accompanied for a friend's violin studio's Christmas concert. I've done it a few times before and I enjoy it. This time was the maiden voyage of using the ipad in a performance like that! It went great. I was feeling all hip, even though the piano was turned so I'm sure no one had any idea I was using it. :)

More school spirit days! Crazy hair day!

I had been planning to take the kids (on my own) over to IF on the 16-18th for Alex and Mary's open house at my mom's home. And on the 16th (Friday) a big blizzard made its way through southern Idaho.... from us over to Idaho Falls was terrible weather. I literally had the car packed and ready to go, but ultimately felt like it would be best not to go that day. I was SO sad. Cried about it. Collin had to go to a tournament, so I was all of a sudden just stuck at home with kids, instead of visiting my family! Anyway, I never unpacked the car because I thought there might be a chance it would improve by morning. First thing when I got up, I looked at the road reports, and they actually were much improved! Woohoo! So I jumped out of bed, got us all ready as quick as I could, and we were off! It took over an hour longer than usual, and it was the worst winter conditions I've driven in in a pretty long time, but we made it! There were parts when I was slowed down to 20 or less, and even stopped at times. There were a lot of cars off the road. But I was surprisingly calm about it (can you say anti-anxiety medication, ha ha?!) and even enjoyed the drive. That was probably because I was listening to the Hamilton soundtrack the entire time, but either way..... I was glad we made the trip! It was our only Christmastime visit we got with my side of the family this year.

Elan likes to do things like fill up the shopping cart with wipes and run around the house pushing it.

This girl and her coloring... she sure loves it.

We had plenty of Saturdays without Collin around, so I usually got us out of the house for something or other! We all had some pretty nice shades on this particular day.

He really hates the sun in his eyes, and requests these whenever the sun is shining on him! And he really keeps them on! It's pretty funny.

Elan got his first hair cut! Collin took him on a morning he was home, while I was doing Ashlyn's hair. I knew I would be S-A-D to see those wispy little curls go... and I sure was! He came back looking WAY older! Not fair! But what a handsome boy. Collin said he was super good while it was done.

Collin's boss gave him a couple of gift cards to a restaurant we've found we really like here--Canyon Crest. So we went out on a date night! It was great!

Decorating cookies!

Christmas eve!

First of all, we had a white Christmas! We got several inches of snow Christmas Eve. Dreamy!
Christmas morning was kind of weird. It was on a Sunday so we had the whole church thing. I was the organist, and also did a piano solo as a musical number in sacrament meeting. SO, I had to get showered and ready decently early and we had to kind of postpone most of our present opening until after church. But then it ended up being more spread out, and that was fun too. It was nice hanging out all together all day, the kids had so much fun. We played games together (like Pie Face!), and watched movies and had way too many snacks. Collin left around 7:00pm to go help someone in the ward dig out their driveway, but came back before too long with one of the young men from a less-fortunate family, and I was able to load him up with treats to take home to his family.

We went sledding the day after Christmas. It was fun to get out for a little family activity together! "Sledding" is almost a stretch for what we did... it was a small hill next to the Twin Falls YMCA. But it was perfect for our kids, plus not much hiking back up which is a huge bonus in my opinion! Both kids loved it.

Then our trip to Utah! We went for 6 days. We did plenty of fun things and visited a LOT of family!

Went to a wrestling tournament

Had fun with Robertson cousins

We visited Beau

Tara and I had a girls night out

Visited with Collin's cousins Trevor and Adrienne and their families, who we don't see very often. This cute baby is Hayes, Adrienne's youngest. Elan got all kinds of jealous while I was holding him and made sure he found himself a spot on my lap too. :)

And this was my big Christmas gift! A new bedspread. I wish I had taken a before picture. Our old one was looking pretty dated. Picture maroon and gold brocade.... ;) Anyway, I bought most of the extra accent pillow covers for it, but I LOVE it! One of my next projects I hope to do is some master bedroom redecorating!
