Inspired by Stained Glass
Canadian Scrapbooker had a page call for projects inspired by Stained Glass last spring and this is one of the projects I created. I typically use an obsolete photo editing software called Microsoft Digital Image Suite to tweak any of my pictures, and it had a stained glass filter in the Effects menu. Kind of a fun look! I made the background paper by randomly dripping alcohol ink onto a sheet of 12x12 glossy paper. The butterfly is cut out of one of my photographs to use as an embellishment.

Canadian Scrapbooker Basics Volume 6
The sixth volume of this fabulous series of books was released on December 1 of last year. The theme is 'more stamping' and features step by step instructions for many of Cathie Allan's wonderful stamping techniques. If you don't see it in your local stores, you can purchase it on the Canadian Scrapbooker website.
I did quite a few projects for this book and had a ton of fun getting inky and trying new techniques. Here are a couple of my favourites.

I followed this butterfly around my garden for ages this past summer trying to get a good photo but patience finally paid off. The border around the page uses the stamping resist technique and some wonderful stamps from Magenta. I stamped with Clearsnap embossing ink (Top Boss), embossed with clear embossing powder, then covered the image with Colorbox chalk inks in different colours and punched them out with a square punch. The ink wipes right off of the embossed design. A very neat effect!
I was in northern Manitoba last summer for work. REALLY far north. Flew in on a tiny chartered plane and stayed at a rustic cabin. It didn't get dark until really late because of the latitude and time of year, so we went fishing after supper and were still fishing close to midnight. I don't know anything about fishing so it was quite the adventure for me! The layout uses Kaisercraft papers and stamps - the Hunt and Gather line. One of my favourites. I used Cathie Allan's Stamp Smoosh technique to make the lighter coloured patterend paper with the Kaisercraft stamps and some Colorbox chalk ink. I also added a little Magic Mesh for texture. That gorgeous sun is a piece of Magenta chipboard covered with ink.
This layout features some dimension where I stamped images, then popped them up with Scrapbook Adhesives dimensional adhesive. The alphabet and grass stamps are from Stampin Up, the dragonflies are from Local King rubber stamp and the loon is made by Frogs Whiskers Ink. The last two are Canadian companies.

Through Black Spruce
Reader friends - I just finished Through Black Spruce for my book club. Highly recommend it. It took me a few pages to get into, but then I was really able to enjoy the story and savour the writing. It is really an unforgettable story, an "astonishingly powerful novel of contemporary aboriginal life, full of the
dangers and harsh beauty of both forest and city".

It's a New Year
Not sure where November and December went, but now we are almost three weeks into the New Year and I still have not posted anything on this blog. I do blog occasionally but when I do, I usually do it for the Canadian Scrapbooker blog. There is only so much time in a day. I'm teaching university again this term in my 'free' time and just returned from CHA in Anaheim.
Typically CHA is around the end of January, so it was earlier this year (seemed like Christmas had just ended and I was headed to the airport) and is supposed to be even earlier in January next year. That might play havoc with the holiday season for a lot of people that need to prepare projects and displays for booths at the last minute.
Every year the CHA show in California seems smaller. This year was no exception, many of the usual manufacturers did not have booths, or the booths were downsized from their 'usual' display. It is still an amazing trade show to attend - so much to see, so many crafts and colours and textures down every aisle. Booths for other crafts and hobbies such as sewing and knitting and even cake decorating were interspersed between scrapbooking type booths.
I am getting lazy and hardly taking any photographs while I am there. Here's one I borrowed from Cathie Allan. The weather was quite chilly by California standards, but for us sun-starved Canadians, still warm enough to eat lunch outside.
There was lots of scrapbooking inspiration on the show floor and many beautiful new products. There seemed to be trends towards many companies to offer 'smash book' style of mini-albums, lots of speech bubbles, arrows, honeycomb/hexagons and mixed media. I adored the new lines from Glitz Designs, Webster's Pages and Basic Grey. Oh, and don't let me forget KaiserCraft. I always love KaiserCraft.

Just love the patterns and colours of this line.
Perfect for boy pages.
The DCWV booth was spectacular as always. Check out this elephant!
