Simple and Creative Valentines

2/8/12

Since we have less than a week left before Valentine's Day is upon us I thought I'd share some Valentine ideas that are quick and easy to make.  All of these great ideas come from Connie over at
(Please note that not all of these ideas were originally used as
Valentines, however you could easily use the same concept
and create your own personalized cards.)

More Valentine Container Ideas

2/1/12

Last year I shared this  Valentine Canister  idea with all of you.
I also suggested some fun Valentine gifts that you could stash inside of them.
They were a huge hit with my girls and will continue to be a Valentine's Day tradition here at our house partly because they were a great way to minimize how much stuff I purchased for my girls and ended up being a fun little package for them to open.  Since they were such a big hit I just had to share this other idea that I found from Yesterday on Tuesday...
I love the concept of using old food containers and recreating them into unique storage containers.  But, I thought it would also be a great way to create some additional Valentine containers for your kids, school teachers, neighbors or friends.  All you would have to do is change the color of your scrapbook paper and use and old red or pink sweater instead of a blue one.  Such simple ways to recreate what you already have on hand into the perfect little gifts.

Valentine Canister Goodies

2/4/11

Here are the fun little goodies that my girls will be getting in their canisters for Valentines Day (all found at Walmart):
Bubbles--$2.00
Stickers--$1.00
Plain White Shirts (for church)--$3.50 each
Finger Puppets--$1.00 each

I added the stickers and some ribbon to the bubble containers to make them a little more festive.  Then, I  rolled up the shirts and tied them with some ribbon so they would fit better in the canister.

The finger puppets also needed a little something to cuten them up, so I simply covered their tags with scrapbook paper, added a bow, and wrote a little Valentine message to them.  Even though they can't read.
Elephant:  You're Unforgettable
Monkey:  Let's Hangout sometime
Giraffe:  We're Longing to be with you
Tiger:  We're Wild about you

Valentine Canisters

2/3/11

I got two of these metal canisters full of cookies for Christmas one year and after the cookies were gone I put the canisters into a cupboard until I could think of something to do with them.  I finally realized they would make the perfect little Valentine containers for my hubby and girls.

You can really put anything and everything in one of these for your kids: pencils, stickers, a comic book, candy, even a rolled up shirt.  I'm going to fill my husbands up with some of these tasty treats.  I figure this will be the perfect tradition to start up each V-day.
If you have some canisters or tins on hand all you'll need to make them over is some scrapbook paper, scissors, Mod Podge, hot glue, ribbon, and any other embellishments you want to use.
First you want to measure you canister to determine how much paper you'll need to cover the exterior.  Then, cut your paper and wrap it around as tight as you can.  Now, take your Mod Podge and glue the paper on top of itself.  Make sure you hold the edge down until it dries.   Then cut out a circle of scrapbook paper for the lid.  (I used hot glue instead of Mod Podge since it sticks to the metal better.)  Finally, give it that personal touch by adding some ribbon, tags, buttons or bows.

Be Mine Banner

2/2/11

I wanted to make a little something for my girls to have in their room for V-day.  I got a free Valentines Day scrapbook kit, so I went ahead and used that.  I decided to keep it really simple in case little hands end up getting to it.  This took no time at all the throw together.  The hardest part was trying to figure out how I wanted it to look.  I think it will be perfect for their room.

Check out these other sites for more ideas on how to make you own V-day Banner.

Valentine Cell Phones

2/1/11

What you need:
  • Printer that can handle printing on cardstock
  • 8.5 x 11 grey cardstock
  • Necco button candy (I got mine at Amazon, but you can try Walgreens)
  • Scissors
  • Adhesive (I used mounting squares so the candy could be removed easily)
  • Heart Stickers
  • Pixie Sticks, Smarties, or medium sized Tootsie Rolls
  • Tape
Yes, I am making "phoney" Valentines!  I saw this idea last year at Disney Family Fun, but I made a few changes.  I didn't have time to do it last year, so, I planned in advance this time.  But when I went to the website, I was a little disappointed that they didn't have a template to print off.  No template?  No problem.  I made my own and FREE for your printing pleasure (non-commercial use only).  With the help of the template, this is a relatively fast and a very easy project.  Just click on the image to see it in full size.

I used grey cardstock because I could print my template onto it.  If you get something that has a shimmer to it, your ink will smudge.  Cardstock is the best bet because it is think enough to hold the candy and it is the same color on both sides...so when you open the phone you won't see a different color or no color at all.  Also, I've never had a problem with my printer handling cardstock, but some printers may not be cooperative.  If you have any problems, try Kinkos or any other printing place.

I then made these for the texting windows.  For the girls..."CALL ME UR VTINE!" in pink and the boys "U R G8!" in blue, with a little "Message Sent From: 'Child's Name' " at the bottom.  And all the kids needed their names on the front.  Here is the template for the texting windows.  You can go into Photoshop and add your own text or cut them out and write them out by hand. Just click on the images to see in full size.

I simply cut everything out, folded the cardstock to create the phone, adhered the texting windows to the cardstock, added a heart sticker, adhered the button candy, and taped a roll of Smarties onto the back for the antennae.  This project took a little bit of time, but was super easy.  My boys thought these were the coolest things ever and they can't wait to take them to their classmates!
