Little Explorer (ElKayla)

Kayla has a budding interest in nature. While I am excited that she is so interested in nature, I don't think Nature shares her enthusiasm. The other day, while doing some planting in our little patio, she kept asking for a worm and, once she had one, if she could bring him inside. Then she wanted to dry him off, then put him underwater. Poor creature!

Today's discovery was a little pill bug, which joined us from near our house to the Boy's Club and back. In the photo below, Kayla is kicking a ball around holding the poor bug.

Once home, she made the pill bug a little home in an Easter egg and then a yogurt carton. Last I heard, Daddy had her put him outside.

This all has reminded me of Tiny Toon Adventures (circa 1990) in which one of its main characters, Elmyra, loved the life out of little animals. So I deem our 3 year-old ElKayla.

Kids Crafts, etc.

Living in sunny California, it took awhile to find some extra leaves to finish the leaf chandelier (maybe "chandelier" is an overstatement. "Embellishment" might be better...). I finally broke down and resorted to taking some leaves off of a tree at Target and here it is:

Other Kayla activities... I saw this idea online and thought it would be a great way not to waste expired oatmeal. At the end of her pretend baking session, Mommy gets to teach her about clean up. :-D

These bottles were a combination of two ideas: bowling + fun colored rice. The bowling idea: weight some empty bottles with rice and then knock them down with beanbag or other non-destructive item. I got the colored rice idea from a former preschool teacher (thanks, Barbie!) and thought color would be more fun than plain white rice. To color: mix food colors and rubbing alcohol in plastic bags and then let the rice dry overnight or until dry.
Well, I tried to demonstrate bowling to Kayla but was a total bomb. Kayla started wailing that I needed to stop hitting the bottles. So...maybe we'll try bowling next year. In the meantime, Kayla is content to play with pretty rice.*

*Warning! The rolly little grains of rice makes this messier than the oatmeal.
