In Less Than 24 Hours

I don't usually think I'm a terrible mother, but I felt like I was trying to prove otherwise Sunday into Monday.

Sunday night I had taken Hadley into my room and placed him on the bed while I did some things. He likes to sit up on the bed and look around. Koda (the dog) came into the room with something stuck on his nose and I bent down to get it off. It was stuck better than I expected and I put all of my attention into getting it off. The next thing I knew, Hadley had pulled himself to, and off, the edge of the bed. Head first. I felt awful; I was right there and I didn't even see it happening, let alone stop it. He wasn't seriously hurt, but it still took quite a bit of comforting to make him feel better.

Monday morning I went to the gym. I got Adelyn out of the truck and put her down to get Hadley out. When I shut Hadley's door I found Adelyn on the other side with her fingers now pinned in the door. I quickly opened the door again and she pulled them out and started screaming. They didn't look or act broken but they DID look like they hurt a lot. We stayed in the parking garage for a little bit, while I decided what to do. I was pretty sure she didn't need to go to the doctor, and I gave her some tylenol for the pain and I was hoping she'd start feeling better soon, so we decided to go in -- maybe the nursery in the gym would be a good distraction for her.

So we went in -- with me carrying both kids, and both of them crying (Hadley cries when Adelyn does). The ladies in the nursery agreed with me that her fingers weren't broken. So they took Hadley and played with him while I tried to calm Adelyn down. We sat there for 25 minutes before she was calmed down enough to answer questions. I asked her if she wanted to stay and play or go home. She said go home.

As we were walking out of the gym, Adelyn wanted to hold my keys (a normal request) so I let her. When we got back to the truck she wouldn't give them back to me (not normal) so I sat her and Hadley down so I could get them from her. She got mad and stomped her feet -- on Hadley's hand. He started screaming which set Adelyn off again and neither one of them stopped until we were almost home. When I went to get them out of the truck to go inside I realized why they had stopped. They had both fallen asleep from so much crying.

Wow. What a day. I'm glad it's all over (all that's left of Adelyn's incident are a few bruises, and Hadley doesn't have any marks) and I hope I never do such stupid things again!

Oops!

I was soundly scolded by my sister-in-law yesterday about my "husband tag" post. (not really; she saw my post, thought it was funny, told her husband, who told my husband, who told me) The man jumping the 4-wheeler in my "husband tag" isn't my husband. He's my brother-in-law, Curtis' brother Roy. I knew Curtis had worn a black sweatshirt that day so that was what I was looking for in the pictures (4-wheeler color didn't help since we switched off periodically throughout the day), I did not pay any attention to helmet color, which is what gave it away. So this is a picture of Curtis jumping a 4-wheeler.

I had also wanted to get a picture of Curtis on his mountain bike at Slick Rock or in a raft on the Snake River or something, but he's always better about taking pictures than I am, so most of our good pictures have been taken by him -- and he's never in them. Alas. I need to get better about that.

Oh, and Kim, I'd like to tag you too on the husband post. Tell me all about Roy. :)

Husband Tag

Name: Curtis Dale Tubbs

Birthday: November 22, 1979

Where From: He moved around a lot as a kid, but he says he's from Roy.

Job: Financial Analyst for a government contractor (big fancy name for a relatively boring job), Owner of an elderly care company (that we hope someday will be full time -- if you know of anyone in need -- www.beathomeinc.com), and Glazier on the side (with his dad since his teenage years)

Favorite TV Show: The Office or MASH

Favorite Book: the only books I've ever seen him reread are the scriptures, so I can't be sure. He likes Michael Critchton and John Grisham books and any self-improvement books. He also liked Harry Potter

Hobbies/Interests: Anything outdoors. Rock climbing, hiking, mountain biking, camping, 4-wheeling and anything that involves tool, especially power tools (like cutting down huge [dead]  trees with chain saws). He also likes basketball, volleyball, and frisbee.

Favorite Food: Crab legs and passion fruit juice

Least Favorite Food: any vegetable, unless it's covered with unhealthy stuff like butter or cheese or mayo (artichokes with mayo are a rival for his favorite food)

What you like about him: He is a go-getter and can do it all. He has a very even temper and almost never has anything remotely like a mood swing. He dreams big and then achieves it. He loves spending time with the family and is an amazing dad and loving husband.

Any other interesting facts: He had a clef palate when he was born and now, when he grows a mustache he has an off-centered bald spot (barely noticeable) that I think is really cute.

Tagged -- It's all about the 4's

I almost forgot I was tagged. Sorry it took so long.

Here are the rules. You go to your picture files and pick the fourth picture in the fourth file. Then you tag four friends.

So here's the picture I found. This is Curtis' best friend Kevin and it's taken (probably by me) in Kevin's old house in their unfinished (at the time) basement while he's playing ping pong (probably against Curtis) while I was, like, 6 months pregnant with Adelyn. Wow, that was random.

Who could ever???

I took Hadley in for his 6 month appointment yesterday. It was scheduled for early morning, but was rescheduled last minute for later in the day because the doctor was stuck at the hospital. When I finally saw the doctor he explained that a 4 month old boy was brought in the night before (while he was the pediatrician on call) with "respiratory difficulties". It turned out that those "difficulties" were caused by a bunch of huge bruises around the boy's neck that had swollen, making it hard for him to breathe. The doctor then went on to undress the boy, discovering many more bruises. He then decided to take an x-ray and found that he had had lots of broken bones, including a few currently broken ones (all of them looking like they had been let to heal on their own). I don't know for sure if the doctor spent the whole night in the hospital or just stayed late and went back early, but it sounded like he was there the whole night. Now, this doctor is one of the most soft-spoken men I've ever met, but yesterday he had a lot to say and I totally agree with him. He said that he'd just love to strangle people who can do that to a baby.

He said that the baby cried just like any other would but that instead of reaching out for people to console him (like a baby his age usually does), he just laid there. He knew he wouldn't get comfort from his parents. I can't even think about that without crying. Every time I hear about a baby in a situation like that, I just want to take him away and show him how good the world can be.

I can't believe there are actually people out there that can be like that, but it's in the news enough to make me sick. Then there are people like my friend Tara who are/would be wonderful parents but they can't even have children of their own unless they adopt. I just wish our ability to procreate was dependent upon how good of a parent we will be. But that might cause problems of its own.
