giver

i'm pretty sure i mentioned that i was totally obsessed with this book.  and the 3 that follow it.  well, i am.  so, so good.  so~let's begin.  had a great night with the book nook ladies last thursday!  the giver centers on a boy jonas, his family, and the community in which they live.  the community is full of sameness=no growth=no differences=true emotion is lost=no choice=it's just how it is.  sameness.  a few thoughts that came from this:  how do you know true good in the world when there isn't true joy or even bad?  especially if those choices aren't allowed.  if you take  choices away, what you have is control and that isn't what is real.  yet, you do have to have rules to make a balance.  jonas has a family unit.  they were assigned to each other.  that's how it works.  you apply to be married, you apply to have children, and everything is assigned based on what the leaders think would be a good match.  that also includes your job.  so again, no choice making or outside thinking goes on.  sameness is key.  jonas is assigned receiver.  it's an honor.  he works with the giver who holds memories of the past.  the giver gives those memories to jonas who now receives them.  and it is painful to be the only ones to hold on to these memories.  if you had others to share with, then you could come together in the joys of sledding and christmas for example or if there are hard times you could work together to figure it out…and here that doesn't happen.  it is all on the giver and receiver.  a tough place to be.  and it is hard for jonas.  when his family takes in gabriel it brings in a feeling for jonas he hasn't had and that is love.  and it is out of love that this book ends how it does.  which i won't say…i am going to end with a quote brought in by marie:
but while the atonement is meant to help us all become more like christ, it is not meant to make us all the same.  sometimes we confuse differences in personality with sin.  we can even make the mistake of thinking that because someone is different from us, it must mean they are not pleasing to god.  this line of thinkings leads some to believe that the church wants to create every member from a single mold-that each one should look, feel, think, and behave like every other.  this could contradict the genius of god who created man different from his brother, every son different from his father.  even identical twins are not identical in their personalities and spiritual identity. ~president uchtdorf.
this was a great choice marie.  loved it!  i enjoyed the story alone and how it fits as a whole with the ones that come next.  such a great discussion.  so until next time, happy reading!

and next time

next up-we will be meeting oct 2nd at 8pm my house.  we are going to be reading the giver by lois lowdry.  happy reading to all!!

a little austen

last night was a great back to book nook night!  friends, food, and books in one night-the best!  over the summer it was decided that we would pick a book by jane austen and share when we regrouped.  a couple of us started with persuasion and ended up reading sense and sensibility.  which by the way is a lovely read.  persuasion is not.  and emma was read.  and pride and prejudice was also read.  it was interesting to compare movies to books and books to books.
some of favorite quotes and thoughts of the night:  in sense and sensibility it is understood why marianne does not initially take to colonel brandon.  he is old. er.  the book makes a bigger deal of the ousted dashwood girls and mom.  it is a very promenent part of the beginning.  willoughby really is not a good person.  elinor says of that "you made your own choice.  no one forced you."  i like that.  also, where it all started "  the old gentleman dies:  his will was read; and , like almost every other will, gave as much disappointment as pleasure."  this is certainly true for the dashwood ladies.  i also like that there is a growth in character.  i think that growth in character is seen throughout the austen books.  in emma, by the end she is a changed person.  from spoiled to aware.  things i didn't know because i haven't read the book-she was not an only child, her father loved porridge, she marries mr. knightly sooner rather than the very end.  it intrigues me when there are differences from book to movie and what they choose to leave out and put in.  what becomes important.  then i have that idea in my head.  good.  but different.  unless you watch the harry potter movies and that is a whole different posting rant.    pride and prejudice is another epic and well known story that stands the test of time.  it is so perfectly perfect.  we have read that one before in our nook so i don't need to add too much more, but in case you forgot- elizabeth is the best heroine to a book and  i love her strength and composure.
so to cap it off, it was a fun night to gather again.  i love jane austen and when you get a chance-i highly recommend skimming through and giving her books a chance.  until we meet again, happy reading.

long awaited

today's the day!  we are back in book club mode.  tonight we start back up with our little nook after taking a few months off.  we will meet at my house at 8pm.  up for discussion is a jane austen book of your choosing.  i have to admit-i started one and switched mid-way.  i will not give anything away just yet, but the one i went for was solidly good and not prideful nor prejudiced.    okay, so tonight is the night and until then happy reading!

summer list

do you have a summer reading list already made out?  reading is one of my most favorite past times.  i just enjoy a good book that can transport you places and make you believe the story.  silly or serious-it's a joy to find those "finds".  i have begun my jane austen reading.  i picked two.  but, i am not going to share which ones.  i have really enjoyed getting into them.  i love a good throwback!  so here is a mini list that may occupy your summer if you so need…
1.  anything jane austen
2.  blackmoore
3.  the fault in our stars (it's potentially sad)
4.  orphan train (see above)
5.  one summer
6.  battle hymn of the tiger mother (it's a bringing your kids up thing…)
7.  the pioneer woman: black heels and tractor wheels (her food always looks great~ it's her backstory)
8.  1963 (i haven't read it yet, but i know the author and he is looking for feedback)
9.  anything harry potter
10. anything sara eden

it's not a very heavy list, because after all, it is summer and sometimes you need not so heavy lists.  it is a little of this and that, with some being better than others.  if i find more, i will share.
until then, happy summer reading!
