ABC Wednesday - X

X is for Xmas

I know this is often a debate some people have and therefore thought I would add this information I found on a website.

Xmas is not of modern coinage. The Oxford English Dictionary documents the use of this abbreviation back to 1551. Undoubtedly it was employed before that. Now 1551 is fifty years before the first English colonists came to America and sixty years earlier than the completion of the King James Version of the Bible! Moreover, at the same time, Xian and Xianity were in frequent use as abbreviations of Christian and Christianity.
You see, the X in Xmas did not originate as our English alphabet's X but as the symbol X in the Greek alphabet, called Chi, with a hard ch. The Greek Chi or X is the first letter in the Greek word Christos. Gration claims that as early as the first century the X was used as Christ's initial. Certainly through church history we can trace this usage. In many manuscripts of the New Testament, X abbreviates Christos (Xristos). In ancient Christian art X and XR (Chi Ro--the first two letters in Greek of Christos abbreviate his name. We find that this practice entered the Old English language as early as AD 100. Moreover, Wycliff and other devout believers used X as an abbreviation for Christ. Were they trying to take Christ away and substitute an unknown quantity? The idea is preposterous.
Monder culture may use Xmas today as an unchristian shortcut for Christmas, but the ancient abbreviation by no means originated as such. The scribes who copied New Testament manuscripts had no intention of taking Christ out of the New Testament. They used the abbreviation simply to save time and space. ... I do not use it because of the possible misunderstanding it often causes as a result of its is representation or abuse" [i.e., in its use for commercial purposes in modern times].

As far as our Christmas we had such a sweet time with both the Kovlak and Wilson family. We were able to spend exactly 3 days and 4 nights with each family and that never feels like it is long enough. We visited the Kovlaks first and I have completed this Video Montage of our time together. I am working on one for our time with the Wilsons, which includes Christmas morning when Annabelle recieved her slide from Santa! Look back to see that montage soon!

ABC Wednesday - W

W is for WEGESNAC

What is a WEGESNAC you may ask?  It stands for White Elephant Gift Exchange Sunday Night At Church. This is our 3rd annual WEGESNAC, and it was a lot of fun as always. I got a $5 gift card to Starbucks and Josh got a $5 gift card to Culvers. I think we were the only ones to actually get gift cards.

For those that don't know, a White Elephant Gift Exchange is when Gifts are wrapped, but are not labeled to reflect a specific sender or recipient. Gifts are typically inexpensive, humorous items or used items from home and sometimes, they are just plain trash; participants draw a number to determine their order. The 1st participant unwraps any gift from the pile and then shows it to everyone. Each successive participant, in the order determined from the drawing can either "steal" an already open gift or go for a wrapped gift from the pile.

If the participant chooses to steal, the person whose gift is stolen now repeat their turn and either steals another person's gift (they cannot immediately steal back the gift that was just stolen from them) or unwraps a new gift. This cycle of stealing can stometimes continue for a long time, until a new gift is chosen, at which point the turn is passed to the participant with the next number from the drawing. Since items can be stolen, the item in your possession is not yours until the game is over once all the names have been drawn.

ABC Wednesday-V

For ABC Wednesday all I could think of for V was...
The Value of Vera Bradely

I only got into Vera Bradely like 2 years ago and they are best pieces I have ever owned! The biggest pro of Vera Bradely is that you can wash it and it will look just like new. I have spilt hot chocolate all over my purse, put my diaper bag in the mud and all of it has come out in the wash!Everything you see here I have recieved as a gift, except the diaper bag. I love them. I just got the purse all the way to the right from a student for Christmas and on my christmas wishlist I have two more, one as a school bag and one as a catch all bag.

12 days until Christmas

Today starts the 12 days of Christmas . This year Josh and I aren't doing it for eachother, but here is Annabelle's gift and a video of her recieving it. I'll be honest I was a little shocked at her reaction to the gift because at the store when she saw this she was screaming, "Dora, Dora".

By the way, would anyone like to give a little parenting advice? Meal times have become extremely difficult. Would you say if she doesn't want to eat what you are eating to not let her get up until she eats or let her down and let her eat the meal when she is hungry?

So I took this quiz online...lol...I'd say it was pretty accurate...look what I gave my daughter tonight!

You Are a Practical Gift Giver

Your gifts are useful, appropriate, and custom tailored to each person.

In your opinion, the best gifts are gifts that someone will actually use.

Your gifts may not be the most glamourous, but they are always appreciated.

Trimming the Tree

Due to the ER visit on Friday, we didn't have time to decorate the tree that night. So last night we decorated it. I love the story that Josh tells in this first video. I remember when he told me this story for the first time and it melted my heart. I never get tired of hearing it, and I hope he continues to tell me every year when I decorate the tree. It may be a little mushy for you all, but I love it!

Here is Annabelle helping me decorate the tree. She did a good job until she got side tracked by a Lion King commerical.

ABC Wednesday - T

I know I am a bit late for ABC Wednesday. It has been one of those weeks, but better late than never.
T is for TREE!!!

This year has been so exciting as we get ready for Christmas. Annabelle is actually understanding and getting excited for Christmas. She was so excited to show me the tree at Miss Cindy's and at church, so to get our own was very EXCITING for her. Here is a scrapbook of our trip.

A side note, I got home from work on Friday and her eyes were REALLY crusty. Josh said they had been like that all day long, so I took her to the ER around 4:30 and she has pink eye. You'll see in some of the pictures how crusty her eyes look.

Monthly Milestones

Annabelle is 23 Months old. Here are some things she did in her 22nd month.

1. Last month she learned to undress herself, this month she is trying to dress herself! She doesn't always get it right as you can see.

2. As I've said before she is sneaky. This took the sneakiness to a whole new level!

Align Center

3. Her new sayings: "Look at me!" " I see ____ (food, play zone, etc.)" "Merry Christmas" "Happy Birthday"

4. She went to Chuck E. Cheese for the first time and loved it!

5. Her favorite snacks are fruit snacks.

6. She started taking vitamins this month and loves them! We give them to her with her fruit snacks because she always wants more.

7. She is attached to her blankey! I tried so hard not to have my child attached to a blanket or animal, but try as I may we are now extremely attached to a homemade blanke that was given to me at my shower. I keep meaning to call the lady that made it and ask her to make me more!

8. She likes to walk down the steps by herself, which drives me nuts. She says, "I do, I do"

ABC Wednesday-S

Let us love, not in word or speech, but in truth and action.
1 John 3:18

I am glad I have an opportunity to blog about this for ABC Wednesday. Our church does this project for Samaritan's Purse. You get a shoe box and you choose a child and the age of the child and you fill it with gifts for Christmas. I had Josh get the box and I thought that we'd go shopping together, but one day I came home and Josh had done all the shopping. The story I am about to share, Josh will probably be embarassed, but I am thankful for a husband who is compassionate.

He said he was shopping and he saw all these inexpensive gifts that he could fill the box with, but then a thought struck him. He thought if this box were for Annabelle what would she like. And he proceeded to then by things based on what she'd like and not on the price tag. I got choked up! I thought how selfish I could be when giving to others, and yet he wasn't! He was so proud of this box and all the things that he chose. We did not show the box to Annabelle because we knew how she would want everything in it. Next year, we will have Annabelle shop for the items. We think this will be a great way to teach her how to truly care and love others, even those we don't know or will never meet!

Safe and Sensitive

As a parent one of the most enjoyable things Josh and I do is just watch Annabelle. Yesterday we had a family day since I had the day off of school. We went to the mall to do some Christmas shopping and we stopped at the play area for a while to let Annabelle play.

Two things Josh and I observed were that Annabelle is safe and sensitive. First, you can tell she is safe because she will only go down the slide on her belly. As she watched the other children she tried to go down on her bottom, but the whole time she went down she held onto the side of the slide. The second thing we noticed was she was sensitive to others. She watched others carefully and waited for them to be done with something before she played on it. One example was they had these cars (you'll see them in the video) and a couple of times she went to go play in one and someone else was in it. She waited there until they were done and then went in it, the whole time not complaining.

Sweet Story: Last night we were all doing our own thing when she started calling Daddy. She went and got him, then she started calling me. I came to them and she started pulling us, at this point we were now all holding hands. We thought she was just playing a game, but no! She pulled us all the way into the big room by the couches and then picked up a movie. She wanted all three of us to watch a movie together. So we made popcorn and did just that!

Marking Measurements

Josh was talking to his parents about how big Annabelle has gotten and got the idea that we should be marking her measurements on the wall. So tonight we did just that and are using her bedroom door frame. Josh even got the leveler out to make sure he was accurate!

ABC Wednesday-Q

ABC Wednesday is on the Letter Q. This was QUITE tough!
Quintessential Q-utie
(Listen to this kids laugh! I just love her.
She is actually watching a video the video below)

This is the video she is watching in the above clip

When I first thought of the letter Q, all I could think of this week was when I play scrabble I always get stuck with the Q and when you get stuck with the Q and all the Us are used it is pretty hard to find a word. So I learned an easy three letter Q word a couple of years ago that does NOT need a U.

qat-noun
the leaves of the shrub Catha edulis which are chewed like tobacco or used to make tea; has the effect of a euphoric stimulant; "in Yemen kat is used daily by 85% of adults" [syn: kat]

Quotes: (Some of my favorites)

I can't help at a higher level than I live.

To whom much is given much is required. Luke 10

Watch you thoughts; they become words. Watch your words; they become actions. Watch your actions; they become habits. Watch your habits; they become your character. Watch your character; it becomes your destiny.

The best use of one's life is to spend it for something that will outlast it. - William James (Philosopher)

Politics in Perspective

And the LORD said to Samuel, “Obey the voice of the people in all that they say to you, for they have not rejected you, but they have rejected me from being king over them. [...]only you shall solemnly warn them and show them the ways of the king who shall reign over them.” 1 Sam. 8:7, 9 (ESV)

This past election--and every presidential election--is a good reminder to Christians that their hope is not, nor has it ever been, in human government. Here 1 Samuel 8 goes on to describe what the kings of Israel will be characterized by, including taking from the sons of Israel to set up an army for himself, taxing excessively, and redistributing Israel's wealth for his own ends. In spite of this the people still respond in verse 19, "No, but there shall be a king over us [...]"  If ancient Israel's God-sanctioned human government wasn't the "answer," surely 21st Century American government is not either.

Instead, the New Testament is overwhelmingly concerned with the "Kingdom." Of the 158 times the word is used in the New Testament, only a few don't refer to the "Kingdom of Heaven" or the "Kingdom of God," which of course has nothing to do with human government, but what God will establish in spite of failed human government. As Jesus says in John 18:36, "My kingdom is not of this world." And Peter's admonition to "honor the king" (1 Pet 2:17) essentially amounts to a command to pay your taxes, not to look to human government as any sort of answer for society's problems. Often government itself is the problem, as it often was for ancient Israel.

Fear on the part of Christians over what the next few years will bring is misplaced, and so is excessive happiness about the results of the election. Even the best of human governments (American) has proven its inability to bring about a positive moral climate, and we can be sure this trend will continue. Instead our hope lies completely outside the realm of human government. It lies in what God will do when he abolishes government and brings about his own kingdom--the kingdom John refers to when he says in Revelation 11:15:  “The kingdom of the world has become the kingdom of our Lord and of his Christ, and he shall reign forever and ever," reminding us that Jesus Christ is the only one to whom we pay homage, and his the only kingdom in which we place our hope.

Trick or Treating Together

At School on Friday
Josh is a Bear Market, I am Mr. B (our principal) and Annie is a lady bug Saturday night in Onstead

We went trick or treating with our friends, Gina and Dan, a couple from our church that has a daughter, Riley, Annabelle's age. We drove up to where Gina's parents live to trick or treat in their neighborhood.

Josh and I had never seen anything like what we saw there, it was an incredible experience to say the least. I honestly felt like I was a part of a Gilmore Girls community celebration. It was great because it was a very FUN atmosphere.

It wasn't spooky or scary. It was family friendly and there were over 500 people out! I heard one lady say she had 500 pieces of candy and gave away every single piece! Often at houses we had to wait in LINE for Annabelle to get candy.

Annabelle quickly got the hang of it. Her only issue was everytime she got candy she wanted to take it out of her bucket and eat it right away! We gave her a lollipop and other than being extremely sticky it satisfied her for the rest of the night!

Monthly Milestones

Our little ladybug is 22 months old today! Here are some things she did in her 21st Month!
1. She knows what the word, "My" means and knows how to use it....my daddy, my Nemo, my book.

2. She is sneaky! Funny Story: I told her to go put her pacy into the crib after a nap one day. She walked over to the crib, put her arm through the slates and put her pacy in the crib or so I thought. She walked back over to me and her arm seemed funny, so I looked close and she had stuffed the pacy under her armpit and was trying to hide it from me. We have to watch this one!

3. She is so fast. When she runs we are literally running after her now!

4. She tries to sing songs even if she can't say all the words, she tries to repeat some of the song and even attempts to carry the tunes. She loves Jesus Loves Me, You are My Sunshine, Old Mac Donald, Veggie Tales theme song, and My Friends Tigger and Pooh theme song.

5. Her listening skills are improving. When we read familiar books to her she has started to fill in some of the words she knows are coming if we pause for her to say them. One of her favorite books to do this with is Peek a Who?

6. She likes to read on her own now. She knows how to hold the book correctly if it is given to her upside down and she talks as she flips the pages.

7. Her new favorite questions are, "What's this?" and "Why?" Tonight we were at wal-mart and as I got her out of the cart to go to the car she said, "Walk" and I told her, "no" and she said, "why?"

8. She is understanding emotions. I recently was in a car accident, don't worry everyone is OK, but Josh brought her to the scene and I was crying. As soon as she saw me, she started crying uncontrollably and wanted me. Of course, this made me cry even more. I held her for about 5 minutes before we both stopped crying.

9. She has learned to undress herself. Cindy told me one day at daycare she was taking her shirt off as fast as Cindy could put it back on! She is very good at taking off her jacket and if we are holding it putting it on.

Carpenter's Corn Maze

This week has been full of a lot of Fall activities for our family. It started on Wednesday night with taking the youth group to Carpenter's Corn Maze. It was really fun and of course everyone got lost, but it was really cold that night as you'll see from the pictures!

ABC Wednesday -O

The challenge for ABC Wednesday this week was the letter O. I had a whole list of O's but no pictures to go with them. I talked to Josh about writing an "obituary" for Nemo, so he has decided to help me out. ABC Wednesday can be more than pictures, so I am taking creative liberties with this one.

Ode to Nemo
By Josh
(To the rhyme scheme of the Raven by Edgar Allan Poe)
Ah, distinctly I remember,
It was in the bleak September,
And each helpful pet store member, paced and scurried ‘cross the floor.
For we’d come to buy a Nemo,
Though unlikely it might seem-o,
(The U of M game set on Teevo), to make this our Saturday chore.

Little Annie squealed and giggled,
Out from my arms she wriggled,
And Nemo swam and wiggled, when he saw our bright-eyed gal,
“Nemo! Nemo!” she said excited,
When first that fish was sighted,
The fish was brightly lighted—orange and white from head to tail.

We bought him—it was late,
Took him home to acclimate,
Was he family, or bait? He looked shocked and forlorn,
We set him in a room,
Next to the chairs and broom,
Where he’d meet untimely doom, and from our hearts be torn.

One day the tank was greening,
And I knew it needed cleaning,
So I did so, gently gleaning nasty gunk from off the side,
Then replaced the decoration,
When I saw with some frustration,
That with little provocation, our small hermit crabs had died.

‘Twas not a week from hence,
That at Nemo’s expense,
(I won’t leave you in suspense) our new friend had followed suit,
He looked slightly askew,
When I looked up close I knew,
So we bid our friend adieu, and our pain was quite acute.

Nemo, we will miss you,
In our hearts we hug and kiss you,
And have used more than one tissue, mourning your untimely fate,
For our daughter’s heart you’ve broken,
Leaving nothing as a token,
But this poem so aptly spoken, will your memory relate.

Sauder's Village

You may not know this about me, but I am really fascinated by history, particularly the 18oos. I think it all began in 8th grade when I went to Old Bedford Village on a class field trip. I loved that time period and always thought it would have been so cool to live back then. So anytime I hear of a place like this I want to go. If you are faithful blog reader you might remember that Josh took me to Colonial Williamsburg for my 30th birthday in June.

That history brings me to Sauder's Village. Since we moved here I have wanted to go to Sauder's Village. We actually tried going for my birthday one year, but my birthday fell on a Monday and they are closed on Mondays! I was telling my friend, Sarah, at school who actually works there in the summer and she gave us two free admission tickets! Josh and I set yesterday aside as our day to go and let me tell you I was anxiously anticipating our trip! Can I just tell you my dream retirement job would be to work at one of these places! Thank you, Sarah!

By the way I hear there is a colonial place in MI, so that is next! What places have you been to that I can add to my list?

This is Sarah who gave us the tickets
Here is a video montage Josh made of our day!

Pumpkin Patch

Today I went with my friends, Deb, Gina, and Olivia to Kapnick Orchards. We had 6 kids between the four of us ranging from 9 to 7 weeks old! Today was the 3oth Annual Apple Festival at the orchard, so there were a lot of special things for the kids to do. They rode ponies, bounced in a bouncy castle, slid down a huge slide, went on a hay ride and enjoyed treats and cider. We could have picked apples from the orchard, but I think as mom's of young children none of us were very interested in doing that this time!

Here is Ashton, Deb's daughter, and Annabelle Riley, one of Gina's daughters, and Annabelle
Riley is Annabelle's age and they are best buds!
We have a lot of play dates with Leah and Riley.

This was Annabelle's favorite thing today
If you click on the picture to enlarge it, you can see how happy she is!

Here is a Smilebox of our day.
I am so bummed becuase I didn't get a pictures of Gina with her two girls. I emailed her to send me one from the day, I will post it as soon as I get it!

The Mosher's held their 1st Chili Cookoff this weekend. Josh thought I for sure had the winner with our Brett Farve Family Chili recipe. The winner was Deb who made a White Chicken Chili recipe! It was so good I even voted for it over my own. I got the recipe from her this morning at church and made it this afternoon. It was THAT good!

As many of you know, Annabelle has been running a fever for the past 3 days and she was such a trooper on Saturday. We went to the Chili Cookoff and then to our friend's, Cory and Deb, house for dinner. Saturday made us thankful for good friends and family!

Monthly Milestones

Wow, did this month fly by or what! Here are some things she did in her 20th month!
  1. She can climb down the steps the right way. In fact, she can do it without holding on. Funny Story: I was picking her up at Cindy's and we were talking and all of a sudden I went to look for Annabelle and she was going down her stairs WITHOUT holding on. Cindy and I stood there in shock! I wasn't sure if I should grab her or let her go. I let her go and she made it all the way down by herself.
  2. She is finally at the height to reach door handles and light switches. So we see a lot of doors open and close and lights going on and off!
  3. She continues to talk up a storm. For the most part we can understand, but every now and then she just goes off talking we have no idea what she says. Josh said one morning when she woke up she just started talking away and he thinks she was trying to tell him about her dream. Hopefully, soon we'll be able to understand all the jibber jabber.
  4. He favorite book this month is one Granny got her called, I Love Animals. There are over 100 animals in it. She loves pointing and says, "What's this?"
  5. She continues to love Pooh and Nemo. She likes to say, "Pink, pink, pink" and touch her forehead. She hasn't quite got the "th" sound down yet.
  6. Her attention span has grown. She can now sit through an entire book!
  7. We use a little bit of 1-2-3 Magic with our discipline and she can now count from 1 to 3. She is so funny because if I count 1 and she obeys then I don't continue to count, so she'll walk over to me and say, "two!"
  8. Daddy's new thing with her is to give her horsey back rides.
  9. Mommy's new thing with her is we have been going to Burger King every Tuesday night for dinner, since Daddy has school. Sweet Story: there is an older man who has been there every night we go. The first night I took her I said, "Annabelle go find a seat." She went right over to the older man's booth and climbed in! We sat at the booth next to him and she kept talking to him. Now we see him every week and she goes over and talks to him (not literally, but jibber jabber). I am so thankful for how sweet she is, I wonder if the man looks forward to seeing her now?

First Friday Football Game

On Friday night we went to Evergreen's football game. It was Annabelle's first Friday night football game. She loved the band, the cheerleaders, popcorn, and walking up and down the bleachers. Enjoy our video!

Tigers Trip 08

Every year to kick off the new school year Josh takes the teens to a Detroit Tigers baseball game. He presents his plan for the youth group for the upcoming year before we go and we get new Youth Group T-shirts. Josh actually made a design contest for the T-shirts this year and then the Teens voted on the one they liked the best! Hallie, a ninth grader won this years contest.

Our teens got a lot of comments on their T-shirts, all very positive comments! I always appreciate hearing that because I think it motivates the teens to not be ashamed of Christ and their commitment to Him!

Pajama Party

The ladies of our church started a new ministry for women called Sister Circle Ministies and to kick it off they threw a Pajama Party/Spa night. We got massages, manicures, gave ourselves pedicures, did a make and take and could even take a spiritual gift inventory test! It was a huge success. My favorite part was the massage! She worked on my neck and it felt so good!!

Surprise Slide

Since I posted the post where Annabelle was crying because she didn't have a slide some of you have been asking if we are getting her a slide. Well, we did GET her a slide, but we are saving it as her big gift for Christmas. Josh picked it out all by himself. I like it because we can put in in out bonus room in the winter time and she'll get a ton of use out of it. Also, it is gender neutral and sports minded. Here are some pic taken off of the website of the slide company.
