Here are some new pics of my latest sculpture attempt. I'm pretty satisfied with the way they turned out, though maybe a sleeker surface and backdrop would have helped. Yea, I should probably iron my sheets once in a while. Maybe a black curtain?

The sculpture itself was a fun experience though, especially using a new material. Oil based clay vs. earth clay makes a world of difference. I don't know what I was thinking before. It was challenging none the less, but quite rewarding visualizing your own character in 3d, I recommend trying it at least once. I know Ill be trying some more.

Who is that?

He looks a little familiar, I know. But he is a different character- I assure you. I just have a thing for short little fat bald men I guess. It will be finished soon, just have to get some appropriate lighting equipment first before I can get all professional and such.

Character development

Here are some images from a recent project I've been working on with my friend, Steve. He's working on his senior project in the animation department at CCA.

The story is about a dad and his son and their hobby of building a model railroad train set. It is also about time and

how something can get lost and forgotten. The train set is a catalyst for the relationship between father and son. After the son grows old and his father passes away, he eventually gives up on the train set, only until his own son discovers it again, hidden away.

School Sketch Nostalgia

Digging though my portfolio and some piles of old sketchbooks, today I found some drawings I did of my classmates years back. It was a way we all passed time in class, but I never realized that they would be more meaningful later on. To me they're like a time capsule. Looking at these sketches I could tell which assignment we were lecturing that day, what people were wearing- some cases how much sleep they got the night before.

"Le Fabuleux Destin d' Amelie Poulain"

This is the cropped image for the poster, which I think looks better. Good art directing by Kevin. I took way too long on this project, the next assignment will be up in a shorter amount of time.

Amelie Sketches

Recent sketches for a new "Amelie" poster. The idea is to create an attractive new poster, one that evokes a vintage or timely quality and does justice to the film. Our illustration group, six of us each designing a different film poster, plans to use these as promotion, to get our names out there and hopefully some work will come our way. The final will be done in watercolor/acrylic, soon to come.

The Illustration Thesis Review was over a month ago, I've just forgot about the pictures Ive taken. The following are just of a few of the talented group of students that I had privilege of working with this past semester. It was a very fun but tiresome last few weeks before this show. I can't believe the amount of work we accomplished in that short time. I hope I can push myself that hard some day again, good things end up happening when you work hard.

This is a pieced together photo of our studio spaces. Good times. That's Mean Kristine over there slaving away at her work. My mess was over in the right corner.

Prop 8 poster

This is one of my favorite posters Ive done so far. Partly because it works well at a distance, its bold, and the message is clear. Also, this was one of the less tedious pieces I've done for obvious reasons. Probably the first poster where I haven't meticulously painted detail all over the place.

Yee-hah!

Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Typography is weak, again. I will improve upon this soon.

New poster for Savannah Music Festival, yet another assignment based on a pre-existing Dugald poster. Maybe we'll be designing a rock poster soon. This is the first digital rendered and pieced together poster I've done, and it took waaay longer than I anticipated, so it's a little late.

Steve Martin's Comedy

Here's a recent poster assignment, finished this morning actually. It was generally well accepted at the crit, except for a couple issues- mainly dealing with type and design. The type doesn't quite fit well with the "feeling" of the illustration. Each font-face has its own unique character and suggests a mood. This is something I'm just beginning to grasp, so if you have any suggestions please post.

The play, written by Steve Martin, is a comedy set in a bar in Paris ca. 1904 starring both Picasso and Einstein. In the script they are both young and just beginning their careers. Picasso states at one point that he had a vision after he slept with a beautiful woman. He held a glass up to her body, and through the bottom saw her distorted figure. She was in fragments, but as a whole it was still her. This part held my attention and I thought it would make an interesting tie into an illustration.

poster class- first two

So far in my Poster class- for illustration students(note the typography skills) we've created two. The first for a non-profit organization called Bread & Roses. Its cause is to entertain and uplift with music and dance performance those in hospitals, jails, etc. who do not have access to see such events normally. The second poster had a shorter deadline- to get out on the streets as a reminder to donate to a good cause, like Doctors without Borders.
