QUESTIONS I FIND MYSELF ASKING.

Why does your gynecologist leave the room when you undress?

Why do toasters always have a setting on them which burns your toast to a horrible crisp no one would eat?

Who was the first person to look at a cow and say "I think I'll squeeze these dangly things here and drink what comes out"?

Since Americans throw rice at weddings, do Asians throw hamburgers?

Do blind Eskimos have seeing-eye sled dogs?

What happens to an 18 hour bra after 18 hours?

How do they get the "Keep off the Grass" sign on the grass?

Why are there flotation devices under plane seats instead of parachutes?

Why did kamikaze pilots wear helmets?

Why do the signs that say "Slow Children" have a picture of a running child?

Why do we kill people for killing people to show that killing is wrong?

Why do we need training bras? What can we teach them?

If peanut butter cookies are made from peanut butter, then what are Girl Scout cookies made out of?

Why do we sing "Take me out to the ball game," when we are already there?

If rabbits' feet are so lucky, then what happened to the rabbit?

Why do we wash bath towels? Aren't we clean when we use them?

Why doesn't Tarzan have a beard?

Why isn't there mouse-flavored cat food?

Should a person with a beard wash it with soap or use shampoo? Should someone invent beard shampoo?
If you have ever met Brian then you'll know what I mean when I say:

I know I am beyond blessed to have this man as the Father of my children!

He devotes more time, energy, sincere interest, and pure love to being their Dad than anyone would ever believe! From reading stories, homework tantrums, practices, Princess movies and video games to Littlest Petshop, Webkins, terrarium building, clothes shopping and camping with the scouts, you name it...HE DOES IT! ALL!!!

And not only does he do it willingly, he does it well!

Everything good our children are, I know I owe directly to the amazing Father who spends his life serving them and trying to help them grow to be good people!

Yeah...he's pretty fantastic!

I know with out a doubt that he loves them and wants nothing but their happiness.

I truly believe that Brian could easily and successfully take on both sides of the parenting roles.

He would put me to shame if he were the Mom!

YOUR CHILDREN LOVE YOU!!!

Butterfly kisses

Newborn Nate's biggest fan

Always willing to play a game!

Lover of silliness!

Snugly and sweet

"Father . . . is ever willing to sacrifice his own comfort for that of his children. Daily he toils to provide the necessities of life, never complaining, ever concerned for the well-being of his family. This love for children, this desire to see them well and happy, is a constant in a time of change."
"An Attitude of Gratitude," Ensign, Feb. 2000, 4

Thanks for your sacrifices Babe! You mean the world to us!

We'd be LOST without you!!!

Family photo time?

Brian and I haven't had a family portrait for quite a while...or a professional photo taken of the two of us together that we don't hate since our engagement. I keep thinking we really need to just hire someone and do one that we can put on our wall and in Brian's office at work! The trouble is that there are so many options out there for family pictures! Do we do outdoors, inside, family pet, casual, dressy, themed? Ah! The decisions!!! I decided to get online and check out some different things that other people were doing. I think I've got a few good ideas to work with! Maybe if you have a favorite, you could tell me and we'd make it a little contest?

The website AFP has given me a whole new perspective on what we should be trying to record for our posterity!

So, if you have a fav that you think would work for Bri and I, let us know......

this pose could be done for whatever sport season we are headed into!

See what I mean! too many to choose from! I think some of those could really show off who The DeVries family really is and where we want to be together!

People of Walmart...teehee!!!

I'm headed to Walmart today. Hoping I get to see some of these....

Business in front, all party in back!!! The mullet never stops making me giggle!

I think I work with this guy??? And sadly, he doesn't look that bad in this outfit!

and maybe these guys will be there...
while shopping for rat food, it's always good to have that many buckles on your boots! Never know who might be tryin to slip them off and run with them. Also, what is he/she picking at? My guess would be no undies!

White panties and heels, always in season.

I had no idea she was STILL looking for her sheep.

I am all for breastfeeding. Did it with all 3 of my kids for various lenghts of time.

And often even in public. But always with a cover!
I guess to each their own! Right?

My mom is funny...

We took this picture at this place in Idaho to tease my Wicken sister-in-law. She is always talking about her crystal ball and fortune telling? We texted her this picture and said that mom had seen the light and wanted to know what time church was in the morning. Then we said

Love and light, blessed be...

because that's what Trish always says.

Always learning something new...

glad she can joke with us though, or we'd be in trouble! Actually, she'd be miserable!

It's good that she fights back equally as relentless!

"You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes.

You can steer yourself in any direction you choose.

You're on your own, and you know what you know.

And you are the guy who'll decide where to go."

Dr Seuss

Oh I love their eyes! From the second they were born and I was in love with their sweet little eyes! I know that it embarrasses them when I tell them that they have gorgeous eyes, but they just do! So sorry my little cuties...I'm going to keep saying it!

I hope that when people look into those sparkling blues and rich hazels with the long dark lashes, that they'll be able to see what we see inside you! All of the courage it takes for you to knock on a friends door or the sincerity in your heart when you spend the day working with your grandpa and tell me how much you enjoyed his company. I hope you always know how much it means to a mom with a stroller when you hold open a door!

You are going to be great men someday! I am so blessed to know you!

Jake the lacrosse linebacker?

Lacrosse
Jake is playing with his cousin Dylan. His Uncle Eric is helping out on the side line with most games. It has been an interesting way to see these two interact! They are both highly competitive. We have a another relative on the team and he's pretty awesome! Radley has two older brothers who play so he gets a ton of practice and training. But this is Dylan's 2nd year and Jake's first. We thought that it would be a great way to curb the fighting between them...letting Dyl have the upper hand at something he's clearly better at. Wrong. Jake is one of those kids who will compete just to compete! Thankfully my brother is there to stop the drama before it starts!

Jake has decided that lacrosse is AWESOME!!! It beats soccer! We love watching him play! It is so fun to see him pushing and hitting with sticks when no one's mom gets upset at him! He loves the physical aspect of it. We were surprised when he said that it ranks right up there equal to football!!! For now he is playing at Copper Hills in their little league program because there isn't a very strong program in Utah county for his age group. But we are okay with that because his coaches are pretty great and he really likes the boys on his team!

Kindergarten Graduation

My last one to leave kindergarten. You'd think I would have been thrilled! But...I cried! I am such a dork! She loved her teacher so much and wanted to take her something every day! She learned...enough, and made so many friends! I am so happy that she is healthy and able to learn but a little part of me is sad that she's big. She is independent. She wants to do everything! She fights me to let her do her OWN hair! She loves to argue and that is okay for now! Thankfully she knows when to back down, but honestly when Brian's Grandmas said it would go fast, I wish I could have put it on slow motion for a while right after that because it really does!!!!

Allie is a sweet little girl with some fabulous qualities! I am a lucky, lucky mommy to have been blessed with this beautiful little spirit who likes to push my buttons and sweet talk me at the same time! I love that she is an absolute daddy's girl!!! She will tell you that her dad is her best friend in the whole world! I hope that they can always have that special bond! I hope that she will always want to talk to her dad more than anyone else! He's an awesome guy and he is so good to her!!

Donuts and Goodbye...

Over spring break Jeanie,Wendi and I took our kids to get free donuts for their A's at Krispy Kreeme. We have been before and the kids all have a great time and leave

with way too many donuts!

The week before school let out we had to say goodbye to the friend that we were able to quickly and easily get to know and love after a very short 2 1/2 years! Wendi Kimball packed up her sweet little family and moved them to Alabama. Leaving us sad and missing our third wheel!!! The Kimballs are a military family so they are used to moving around, but I am still having a hard time thinking about her cute little kids not playing at our park any more! Or being able to run over and borrow something for a craft from Wendi's basement store!!! Wendi came during a time when I needed a friend and she had no expectations or judgements! We were able to share some great experiences together and I am grateful for everyone of those! Including my the chance to attend Emily's First Communion in the Catholic Church. We didn't share the same religion but we shared the same common values and many great religious conversations! Thanks for your example friend! You are an amazing woman and I will never stop nagging you to make Utah your official home! You will always have family here!! Miss you girl!!!
Alex class of 2011

My oldest nephew barely graduated high school last Friday. Not barely because he didn't go to school or had a drug problem or a chronic illness during his high school career. Not because he is enrolled in special education and struggled academically (although....), or because he is challenged by some devastating trauma while trying to attend. Nope! Nothing of the sort!!! Poor Al! He suffers from a debilitating case of popularity and socialitis!!! Also, sleepinginism. It was rough on his parents! They were scared right up to the second the called his name!

I adore this kid! As do way too many others! He is a charmer! He is funnier than funny and sweet as could be! He and his 2 little brothers (who are equally as adorable, if not more, but don't tell Al) are theatre geeks which is probably why I relate to them so much! It kind of annoys Bri that I like to drive to Cypress High every other Thursday in the Spring to see their Improv performances! Allie and Nate can't get enough either! It makes me so proud to watch him grow up!

I hope that soon he will figure out how important relationships that matter in your life are, like the ones with your parents and siblings! Hopefully someone will come along down in Cedar that can settle him down and help him feel The Spirit long enough to want to serve a mission. He could definitely use the time out there to grow! He has always been our family's own little "super star" and his parents have always sacrificed themselves so that he could have experiences that were out of the ordinary. You would never know that he was the oldest of 6 from Magna if you saw his passport! It is scary that he might expect that from the world! I hope sometime soon he is able to learn that repect is earned, not just given because you're cute!

Alex lived with us when I was in high school so I got to spend a lot of time with him which I loved!!! I have always been his Nannie and there isn't anything I wouldn't do for him! It made me cry a little just seeing him meet a milestone and know that he fought it because he didn't want it to end! Also because he was so sweet to Allie and picked her up when he saw that she was wearing a grad cap too and said "Allie, did you graduate today too? We graduated on the same day? That is so cool!!" and let her have a picture with him! What a sweetheart! I love you Alex! More than you'll ever know! You are forever in my prayers!!!!

So I know this woman.

She's absolutely one in a million!!! I love her more than I could ever tell her! I've known her for a while now and she is such an example of strength and motherhood to me! I know that I am blessed to to have her in my life! My family is blessed because Heavenly Father must have known I would need her! I know that my life is easier because of her thoughtfulness and encouragement when I need it the most! I know that so many other people feel the same way about her too! She really listens to me when I need to talk (and poor Brian has heard enough!). I know that her life isn't easy or perfect but from her sweet smile and genuine concern for those around her, you'd never know! I appreciate that she always has something nice to say about everyone and she helps me look for the good especially when I don't want to! She is so talented and funny and I am a better woman for knowing her!

So...lady, I love ya!

You know who you are...

This song is one of my very favorites!

I am one of those weirdos who feels like music speaks to my soul.

Every time I hear this song, I think of you and the example you are

to everyone around you! I know that I have been changed for good!

Thank you!!!!!

I've heard it said

That people come into our lives for a reason

Bringing something we must learn

And we are led

To those who help us most to grow

If we let them

And we help them in return

Well, I don't know if I believe that's true

But I know I'm who I am today

Because I knew you...

Like a comet pulled from orbit

As it passes a sun

Like a stream that meets a boulder

Halfway through the wood

Who can say if I've been changed for the better?

But because I knew you

I have been changed for good

It well may be

That we will never meet again

In this lifetime

So let me say before we part

So much of me

Is made of what I learned from you

You'll be with me

Like a hand print on my heart

And now whatever way our stories end

I know you have re-written mine

By being my friend...

Like a ship blown from its mooring

By a wind off the sea

Like a seed dropped by a sky bird

In a distant wood

Who can say if I've been changed for the better?

But because I knew you

Because I knew you

I have been changed for good

And just to clear the air

I ask forgiveness

For the things I've done you blame me for

But then, I guess we know

There's blame to share

And none of it seems to matter anymore

Like a comet pulled from orbit

As it passes a sun

Like a stream that meets a boulder

Halfway through the wood

Like a ship blown from its mooring

By a wind off the sea

Like a seed dropped by a bird in the wood

Who can say if I've been

Changed for the better?

I do believe I have been

Changed for the better

And because I knew you...

Because I knew you...

Because I knew you...

I have been changed for good...

Happy Birthday Pops!!!

There are so many things about our dad that we love to talk about when it comes to memories. A couple of weeks ago he was sick and we were hanging out in an ER after he totally ruined our sweet cousin's wife,Tiffany's funeral (Just teasing Dad! But next time you don't want to speak in church or go to a funeral, just say it...you don't have to pass out and take an ambulance ride.)

We were talking about all of the hilarious things that Dad would do to make things easier for Mom, or think he was helping her out but really just making life harder for her! Like the time we went fishing at Paiute Reservior on Father's Day with Uncle Martin and dad lost his pole to a huge trout while he was baiting a pole for someone else and then in the middle of a thunder storm, the boat ran out of gas. Unfortunately, we only had one oar. That was THE absolute longest fishing day EVER!! (Especially since that was also the trip that dad had a stomach bug...yikes!!!!!)
The good news was that the next day he ended up finding his pole floating in the water with the fish still hooked!

Or the time he was supposed to take mom out on her birthday to keep her out of the house so her sisters could prepare a surprise party for her, so he took us all sledding and forgot about the party. Then mom broke her tailbone. She was so late getting home that the party was over and her bum hurt! He meant well!!!

My Dad lives to make my mom happy! He adores her and would do anything in the world to serve her or make her life easier! She loves him right back!

There are so many wonderful qualities about my dad, but my favorite is his selfless generosity.
This picture is of my dad and my mom's little brother, Uncle Martin. He's 58 and has down syndrome and Alzheimer's. He wasn't always so frail. Aside from age, he's always been strong and healthy. We spent our childhood learning how to treat people with disabilities because my parents were always such incredible examples of acceptance and love because of Martin. My dad is retired and until recently had taken care of Martin for 4 years. He would do everything for this man. Shower, feed, toilet, dress, communicate, etc. You name it, if Martin needed it, Craig did it. He sacrificed so much of himself for the love of this helpless, sweet little man and did it all so willingly.

That is the guy my dad is! Martin is not his biological brother, but he loves him as if he was more than one of them! When Martin's care became too much for one person to physically handle, the decision was made to put him in a facility where he could have 24 hr constant care. Dad felt guilty for weeks. I am so grateful that my children have the same opportunity that I had. To see how much my parents care for Martin and how much compassion they feel for people with disabilities like his!

My dad has had so many interesting chapters in his life. It is neat to reminisce with him! There are so many fun things about him personally that I hope my kids will have the time to get to know him like we know him!

Some awesome things about Craig:

He has one brown eye and one green eye (completely noticeable!)

He is a welder by trade but can do just about anything you ask him to do!

He is HILARIOUS!!!

He has road rage?

He is a collector of MANY things!

He genuinely LOVES to help people!

He has a crazy brain injury scar on the left side of his head that he got when our family was attacked by a gang several years ago and he loves it when you scratch it!

He would LITERALLY give you the shirt off his back.

He has a sincere, quiet testimony of The Savior that he keeps very private.

I love you Pop! I hope you start feeling better soon! I hope your birthday was a good one!

64 years and still feeling with your fingers!!! Thanks for everything you are!!!

*SUMMER*

Those skinny legs have some power...

I was so sad thinking that a few weeks ago he was considering leaving soccer completely. Nate's last year has been a really rough one as far as sports are concerned! It broke my heart to see his confidence suffer and passion for a game that he adored turn into a fight.
Thankfully, the ability to make a change happened and hopefully his attitude will be brighter!! Maybe I'm just biased because I have to be, but he has some pretty awesome defensive skills and a foot tougher than most 12 year olds I've seen. Sometimes just making a change can be the answer to a prayer!

I get a kick out of teasing Nate! And he knows it! Sometimes I do it just to see his sad eyes. I think he makes a cute sad face!!! He is the tease at our house...so he totally deserves a little taste of his own medicine! I love him! He is a good sport to let me play with him!
I can always use a fellow teaser to not take me seriously! Thankfully Nate was BORN with the gift of sarcasm! Which I am learning, is a Mortensen genetic trait, that can be hard to take. I am so grateful all of our children have a great sense of humor and know how to let their big brother play with them the way he means it...just as fun!

This year has flown by!

Allie is 6 and sassy as ever!

I love that about her! I am glad that she is independent and confident!

Some people say bossy,

I say "leadership abilities"
Such a Sweetie!

My middle. Messy face and blue eyes.

Hides from the camera, ignores my requests, but has the most thoughtful, generous heart in our home!

He'll sneak an act of service and love in for you when you least expect it!
It melts my heart to walk into a room and see him playing petshops with his little sis just because she asked, or showing Nate how to play a video game that his friends might want to play so he won't feel dumb.

We are definitely looking forward to better weather!! We are ready to be doing more outside things...like picnics, fishing, warmer lacrosse/soccer, swimming, parks, etc.... We're ready!!

Jake decided that fishing is pretty awesome!

Looks like Nate might have some

competition this summer!
Now, if we could get Pops to feel up to taking him out on the fishing boat...

Have you ever been to Taylorsville Days? We try to go every year because they always have awesome fireworks!! We have a great time!!! You should try it! Rednecks, live music, fireworks and glow sticks=good time!! If you haven't been, you should try it! I'm always surprised by the faces I recognize from both growing up and from Utah County...

Oh football...

Jake misses you.

But for now, he'll have to finish up lacrosse.

I'm wondering who's going to to tell him that

linebacker isn't an actual position

in lacrosse?

I guess for now, when he says stay down , you probably should.
