Doran and I have both signed up for the Top of Utah Half Marathon again this year. I didn't run last year because I didn't heal fast enough to train well enough.
Well here we are again. One month from kick off and I am just beginning to train. It seems like the trek, heat and other things have consumed our lives and messed with our training. Not to mention that I would have to go run at o-dark-thirty by myself before it got too hot outside (because I do NOT like the treadmill). I do NOT run by myself in the dark.
Then my training days would conflict with my weight days and I got frustrated and confused on what to do so I.....slept in.
Well I asked Doran if he would go to Hyrum and try to run the first part of the race route on Saturday morning. If I could run 10.5 miles without injury, whining or hating it too much I would consider training the rest of the month. So we got up at o-dark-thirty and drove over. We didn't get running until 7:00 am and I was afraid the heat would zap me by time we got down to the bottom. It did but not TOO terribly bad. We found sprinklers at three houses.
Mom and Stan were going over to Hyrum and Logan anyway so they picked us up at the designated gas station. Mom even packed some watermelon and cantaloupe for us!
Doran's training schedule has been a mess too so he ran hard on Friday knowing that when we run on Saturday he could take it easyish while he stays with me. I think the heat, running ahead and back to me all the way, and the Friday miles caught up to him the last couple of miles too but we had fun together.
We are not sure we want to run races anymore. Doran doesn't need motivation to keep running and I really like the run we did this morning. No worries about making sure I hit the porta potties before hand. No stress with keeping up with runners and when I got tired I could be done because wherever I stopped WAS the finish line. The ONLY draw back was that I had to carry my own water.
Keep my shoulders relaxed, stay on the front of my feet and ENJOY the run. The hardest part when I run is when I beat myself up when I have to walk. Today...I didn't do that!!
Now where is that nap?
Today's Thought
"Neither Satan nor any other power can weaken or destroy your growing character. Only you could do that through disobedience. That is why Satan is so intently focused on tempting you to make decisions that will undermine your character. Satan is an accomplished master at making devastating choices appear attractive, even reasonable. So be careful. At this critical time of life you will be faced with many choices. The decisions you will make will profoundly affect life now and for eternity. Make them wisely and prayerfully."

Mt. Timpanogos
Thanks for letting me steal your post Susette. It saved me a lot of work. :)
Bright and early 5:15 am
♪All her bags are packed, She's ready to go♫
We got up to the trail head and got started on our journey around 6:20 am. Susette warned us that if we didn't get there early then we would have to hoof it another mile or so for parking. As much as I didn't like the 4:30 alarm clock I didn't want to add EXTRA miles on the day. Ya, I know, I'm lazy.
Doran, Jody, Susette
Susette had this wonderful idea to take a picture at every mile. That was so we can see how sweaty we got the progress we made.
Mile 1
This was such a nice waterfall but we couldn't get in a position to get a good picture unless we were on our way falling down the hill. It was also such a relief to stop and splash here on the way down to cool us off.
Mile 2
Mile 4
Don't let the smiling fool ya.
My stud muffin!
Are we going up there?
We sure are. Well the other way though.
I was so pleased to see flowers and grass instead of sagebrush!!
During most of this hike I was saying "It's a good thing my mom can't see me doing this or she would kill me." There were places that were steep drop offs and some areas had me a little worried.
Susette warned us that we would probably be crossing some snow. After hiking across snow patches a few years ago on our Snow King Mountain hike I was looking forward to the snow. I knew it would be a nice refresher from the heat.
The rock cliff drop offs were the scariest for me but they didn't faze Susette and when we got to this snow I wasn't afeared but Susette was. I thought we were twins?
There was a man on the left in the red shirt and his little 3 year old boy that crossed the snow and he was filling his water bottle in the creek you can't see.
What brave souls. They actually camped up there the night before.
It's a pretty steep drop down this patch. You really can't see the drop off where the snow is on the left but ...gulp. When I got to the other side where the "red man" was it was a little tricky jumping from the snow over to the rocks. I told him "Catch me daddy." He did. Then Doran just tromps across like no big deal.
Susette patiently waiting. She already knew how to pee in the inspect bushes.
Uh hum..carry on
Mile 5
and a perfect view of the glacier to the left.
Mile 5
and a perfect view of the glacier to the left.
Mile 6
almost to the top
Susette wanted to start a snowball fight. I wanted to make snow angels and daddy....
well he just threw a snowball at us and then just turned around and walked away like nothing ever happened. Susette's snowball didn't quite reach him.
The U shape in the distance is where we are headed. If you get your bifocals on you can maybe see little ants AKA people up there.
And it took....
this long to get to the top.
Hey look Susette! Your snot doesn't even show up on your wrist band. Good job!
It was pretty hazy from all the fires but the view was spectacular! The pictures never do it justice does it? Well we will have to head up again in a few weeks.
While we were eating our lunch and relaxing our bottoms on the hard rocks, we had a visitor.
He was heading right for us.
| But then he took a detour over to the left side of the rocks. |
Susette tried to catch up with him but this is as far as she got. She decided she wasn't as sure footed as the goat and stopped there. I tried to yell "Here kitty, kitty" but he just wouldn't come closer.
He was probably embarrassed because he really, really needed a haircut.
Then looking back on those scary parts...well they didn't seem so scary coming down.
But still don't tell my mother.
| This is a view of the mountain we just came down off of. |
Running down the mountain in 85 degree weather and trying to catch Doran.
Oh, come on! Now who takes pictures WHILE running?
Doran makes it seem so effortless!
I offered rides, water and candy to Susette but her momma taught her better than to accept candy from strangers.
On our way home we stopped and bought bagged ice so we could freeze our butts off soak our sore, tired muscles in the bathtub.
Daddy got such a nice tan that day...that is until he got out of the shower.
Glad it was at Susette's house and not ours...I mean,
Thanks for letting us use your house Susette!!
After we got cleaned up we headed to Costa Vida for dinner!
We so enjoyed our day and would gladly do this again!
Thanks for being our tour guide Susette! Without you I am sure we would have taken one of the many off-shoot trails and got lost.
Half way home we needed some ice cream. We deserved it!
And boy we even look as tired as we felt.
Great day!
Great company!

Who do I TRUST?
Besides my Heavenly Father, who is first and foremost,
I trust my BEST FRIEND, Doran.
He is my rock.
He will stand by me no matter where...
no matter what.
He has proven time and time again that he's got my back.
He will never leave me alone.
He will encourage me when I need it most.
He will lend a hand when I've failed.
He will reassure me when I feel less than I am.
He will support me when I want to accomplish something.
He will keep confidences.
He will love me unconditionally.
I cannot imagine my life without him.
I am so thankful that we are sealed
FOREVER!!!
Yep, when all else fails...
I CAN rely and TRUST
Doran.

What makes me happy today?
For the past several weeks we have been getting ready to go on a trek with our Stake. I am getting so excited to spend this time with Doran and experience what the pioneers went through. (I am most definitely NOT looking forward to the Women's Pull! This part I really want to skip.)
We were not able to be Ma's & Pa's but we are taking part on the music committee and some Vignette's. Well actually Doran is going to do some of the Vignette's. I will stand by him and encourage him.
We will not be assigned to a handcart but we will be able to interact with ALL of the handcart families. We will be able to help where ever we are needed. We will be melting together in the heat of the day and sleeping in our little tent and hoping not to freeze at night.
So why does this make me happy?!!??
I will go ANYWHERE and do ANYTHING as long as I am with my BEST FRIEND. We LOVE to be together!!
THAT is what makes me happy today!!
