Cloudy with a Chance of Movie Posters

As we've said on some previous posts, Ethan has been working on his potty training. Most of the credit goes to Ethan's school. Apparently, a lot of potty training the toddlers is constantly reminding them to go to the potty (since they won't tell you), and also putting them in underwear so they feel weird when they do have accidents (and they won't do that again). The downside with us at home is that we often forget to ask/tell/physically move him to go, and we don't like cleaning up the accidents.

The great news is that Ethan went this whole past week (at school and home) with NO ACCIDENTS! Woohoo! So we decided to reward Ethan (and us) with a trip to the movie theatre to see Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs.

It sounds weird, but we've actually been waiting to see this movie. This was a book that I remember reading as a kid, and one that Ethan has enjoyed "reading" over the past year. In fact, Ethan ended up brining his book to the movie with us. Overall, it was a very entertaining movie that took a fair amount of liberties with the source material, but in a good way. We had some fun finding homages to the book in some of the scenes.

But the real laughter came even before the movie began. We got to our seats, near the middle of the theater. Now, these theater seats are the kind that you have to sit in so they stay down. If nothing is in the chairs, then the seats fold up. Ethan sat between us, but wasn't tall/heavy enough to hold the seat down if he sat all the way at the back. So he had to sit toward the front of the chair to eat his popcorn and soda.

Until he got tired and wanted to lean back. The chair was waiting for him. When he leaned back, his feet flew up, and the seat folded up on him. It caught him by surprise, but he wasn't hurt (and he didn't lose any popcorn). He just looks up at us and gives us his best Keanu Reeves "woah", like he want to do it again.

On a whim, after the movie, Jill went and talked to the theater manager, told him that she was a teacher, and asked if they gave away movie posters. The manager went to the office and came back with three posters: Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs (since he saw Ethan had the book with him), Planet 51, and Where the Wild Things Are (another book that was a favorite of Jill's and one we read to E)!

So now this has me wondering, what other old children's books could they turn into a movie? One Fish, Two Fish? Harold and the Purple Crayone? The Giving Tree? You never know...

Running Errands with Mommy

On Friday, Mommy picked Ethan up a little earlier and they went to run errands together. Sometimes, it helps to have a little slushy from Target to keep things running smoothly.

Ethan is wearing the colors proudly - on Friday his class had a patriotic parade!

Labor Day Weekend - Part 3

On Labor Day we drove up to see Grandma and Grandpa up in Sommerville. Ever since we took Ethan to the baseball game on Sunday, he has been obsessed with baseball! So he brought his ball, bat, and glove and got his uncles to get a game going up at the property:

Grandpa also got out the remote controlled boad and let Ethan drive it around the pond:

Ethan also got to help Grandpa fish. He caught all of the bait (minnows) and gave them to GP. They even caught a few fish, too!

And when things got too hot outside, we went inside and it was naptime!

The tractor was out and we went riding around. Here we were packings up so we could go home. What a fun weekend!

Labor Day Weekend - Part 2

On Sunday, we headed out to the ballpark to catch the Astros game. The 'Stros were playing the Phillies and it was a beautiful day outside!

We got to the park early so we could get in when the doors opened and see about watching some practice. With any luck, maybe we could get some autographs!

We were able to get down next to the field to watch some of the guys warm up. Ethan waved to them and even got one of the trainers to throw him a practice ball - his first official MLB baseball!
And as part of the grand ballpark tradition, we indulged in some baseball junk food - popcorn, soda, and hot dogs!
Getting Jack Taschner to sign the official ball. He didn't pitch on Sunday because he had pitched for Saturday's game.
Jill went to high school with Ryan Howard, the first baseman of the Phillies, so she waited for over an hour to see him and get him to sign a ball for Ethan. It's a long story as to how she actually got to see him and get his autograph, so call if you want to hear it! The important thing is he remembered Jill, so she did get Ethan's ball signed.
Ryan headed in to the dugout, but pausing to say hello to Jill and sign the ball. It was so loud with fans yelling his name and throwing balls at him (he wasn't looking at them, but they still threw them) that it wasn't much of a "visit." Oh well, it was still fun to see an old friend.
P.S.-the below photo is not zoomed-in at all!

We bought an Astros' banner for E's room and Uncle Keith bought him a wooden bat with matching ball, so he walked away with some great souvenirs.

The below balls are a game used ball (from a bat boy's mom that knew the Englishes and she's part of that long story mentioned above), the ball signed by Taschner, and the ball signed by Howard.

We had so much fun at Mintue Maid and Ethan is already asking to go back to another game.

Labor Day Weekend - Part 1

Long weekends were made for this! We had so much fun this Labor Day weekend, we have to spread it over a few posts.

On Saturday, the three of us hung around the house, doing some work, but also playing. Ethan was really good at the playing part.

It's still pretty warm outside, so we decided to get the pool out. We even put it at the end of Ethan's slide so he could have a little water slide! But his favorite toy was the hose - he tried to trick us to get close so he could spray us!

And like any good outside boy, when he wanted a drink, he went right to the hose!

Soon he discovered that he could get some real distance by sticking his thumb in the hose. and he enjoyed making it "rain."

This was just the beginning of an awesome weekend to close out the summer. More to come soon!

Hanging out in Jammers

I love to see Ethan in his little jammers, the night winding down, and some good snuggle time.
Hanging out at John and Kate's. All of the boys shared a blanket while we were trying to wind them down by watching Pixar's short films (a new DVD that will be on Ethan's Christmas List).
Daddy and Ethan reading from E's bible. Notice all of the stuffed animals, books, and baseball equipment. He's not lonely in his bed!

Under-where?

Every month, Ethan's school sends home a folder with his monthly project, the next month's calendar, and any information we need as parents. On Friday last week, we had an extra note in the folder: "Ethan is now ready to wear underwear to school."

So on Monday we sent E to school without his pull-up and wearing big-boy underwear. And, naturally, we also sent 5 extra pairs of clothes.

After two days at school, he has been doing awesome. There have only been a couple of accidents at school and he has a perfect record at home (so far). Now, we're not getting too ambitious - he is still wearing his night-time diapers to bed.

But here's to no more diapers in 2009!
