Another one....

My bro had finally decided a major decision in his life and had taken some concrete actions in achieving his goals....

He popped the big question.... and he got the answer he was hoping for....

This is a very exciting time for my bro and Jo. And I'm very happy for them.

Congratulations... and welcome to the family Jo!

What kind of animals do you live near to?

By animals, I mean the furry kind... not some of the inhuman and rude homo sapiens that we unfortunately have to house on this earth.

Have you taken note of the kinds of animals that surrounds you?

I'm lucky in the sense that I get to live within close vicinity of the following exotic creatures....

Geese....

Llamas....

Monkeys....

And even lion and lionesses....

Am I lucky or what?!

By this point, some of you may think that I'm living in the jungle and was playing the role of Jane and Esmo being the Tarzan, swinging from trees to trees via vines....

Nope, we live in a Southern suburb in Brisbane and we are not living in caves / up on trees.

The exotic animals are part of the Lennon Brothers Travelling Circus... They travel to different locations throughout the year and it's now South Brisbane's turn.

They were here for about 5 weeks and their last day here was 28 October 2007. Tickets to the circus were $30 bucks per adult for ring side seats.

But we DO get to see cattles everyday and they live approximately 1.5km away from us. (Seriously!!!) There's a farm near our housing estate. Historically, where we live used to be are all plantations. But as more people flock to Brisbane and real estate prices sky rocketed, land owners cashed out and turned into millionaires....

We also have some magpies hanging around our house. If it starts singing and you whistle back, it will "talk" to you and sing. One day, one of them was brave enough to hop to me in my front yard, looking if I've got food for it.

Nice...

I like it.... Their existence somehow make the surroundings livelier and more interesting....

Thanks for the company....

Rockie....

18 & 19 October 2007 - Flying kangaroo, beef steaks , spa and work.....

For the first time in my working life, I have the opportunity to travel!!! (suaku hor?)

Me and my boss went to Rockhampton, "a district that sits astride Queensland's largest and most picturesque river, the Fitzroy. The magnificent Berserker Ranges and Mt Arher provide an imposing backdrop to this city that has a population of 60,000 with a district population of 100,000.

Rockhampton, the Capital of Central Queensland, is located on the Tropic of Capricorn and is the gateway to the Capricorn Coast and Great Keppel Island, the gemfields and farmstays.

Founded in 1853, Rockhampton has many examples of colonial architecture including Customs House, old Post Office, business houses and homes. Rockhampton was once a busy port as many ships came up the Fitzroy River with their goods and passengers. Rockie is also the Beef Capital of Australia (with about 2.5 million cattle - more than 1/2 of SG's human population!!!), and there are six bull statutes situated throughout Rockhampton representing the main breeds of the area.

Why were we up at Rockie? To coordinate and manage the Annual General Meeting of The Rock Building Society (ROK). We left the office on Thursday, 18 Oct 2007 at 1.30pm towards Brisbane Domestic Airport. When we arrive, we checked in on the self help terminals and proceeded through the security scans.

Things didn't go exactly as planned.

1) My boarding pass stated we are to proceed to Gate 31 while Kev's stated Gate 29. We thought that was weird but went in search for our gates. We found them to be one of the same gate so we didn't think much of it.

Ghost terminal?

2) There were NOBODY waiting at either of the gates. We thought our two colleagues from Sydney would be waiting there but they were no where in sight. After 5 minutes, my boss went to check with the information counter while I got water for both of us. It was actually boarding at Gate 1 - which was at the other end of the airport!

3) We headed towards Gate 1 but as it was sitting in another wing, we had to exit from the terminal and go through security again. And when we got to Gate 1, there were people but no sight still of our SYD colleagues. We assumed that they had taken another flight

4) We looked out to the tarmac and saw propellar planes - Not what we had been expecting. When the gate called, we had to walk to our plane - a 48 seater plane and we were seated at the last couple of rows. When it fired up it's propellars, I can feel it's vibration throughout the whole plane and had doubts of whether it will take off.... (it did, after quite and effort and a very bumpy start)

48 seater bumpy ...

5) After about 1.5 hour, we finally arrived at Rockhampton Airport. We then received a message informing us that our two SYD colleagues were delayed and were taking a later flight arriving around 6pm.

6) D, co secretary of ROK picked us up from their airport. We met with the board in their office and was there for more than an hour before D drove me back to my motel - The Coffee House Motel and Kev went with D to fetch Db and T at the airport. When they got there, there were still no sight of Db and T. After some checks, we found that they will only be arriving at 7.30pm.

Since my motel is some distance away from where the rest are staying (Motel 98), we decided to have dinner separately. After a shower, I proceeded down to the cafeteria and ordered soup of the day (Mixed Vege soup) and their signature dish (beef steak).

Dinner was too much and apart from the soup, I wasn't able to finish the main dish so I gave up on ordering dessert. With a very very full stomach, I went back to my room and went for the spa (he he he.....)... It was so relaxing and heavenly....

;p...

Next day, I checked out and caught a cab to the meeting venue at Travelodge. When I got there, T looked at me and asked me seriously "Hey Rach, do you know what's a squab?". I said it's either a quail or a pigeon and they were amazed that I knew. They were having dinner last night and saw that on the menu. Kev and Db thought it was a spelling mistake and they must have meant squid. After checking with the waiter, they found that it's actually baby pigeon who have yet to leave the nest! And from here on, "squab" became a private joke amongst the 4 of us. (Till this day, we still tease each other with squabs....)

The meeting didn't go as well as we had expected but we managed it and when it concluded around 11.00am we promptly packed and hopped into a Maxi Taxi back to Rockie airport. Fortunately for us, Db had managed to get M to change us all onto earlier flights otherwise Kev, Db and T had to wait till 3 and do the "milk run" (Rockhampton - Gladstone - Brisbane) while I had to wait till 5pm to board a direct flight back to BNE on Virgin Blue.

90 seater smoother ride home....

Kev didn't have a good night's rest and was working till 11.30pm the night before and was awake by 4.30am the next day. He was so tired he got confused with the time and seriously thought that we would miss our flight. He thought that it was 12.15pm when it was only 11.15am while we were waiting for a cab. And he actually asked Db if the plane will stop by in Brisbane for them to make a connecting flight back to SYD. This cracked Db up and she asked if Kev will just put on a parachute and jump out of the plane over BNE, or have a troupe of "squabbron" pick him up and send him back home?

The "squab-ron"....

We arrive back in BNE in slightly over an hour. After saying goodbye to T and Db and collecting our baggage, we headed home....

It was a fairly rushed trip and we didn't have much time to explore Rockie. And I didn't dare explore it on my own either coz there were hardly any cars on the road and absolutely NOBODY on the road by 8pm.

Rockie is still like a kampung and most buildings doesn't go higher than 2 levels. There were only a handful that went past 5 levels and they were rare and few in between.
It's still a little backward and doesn't have high tech garbage collecting trucks. They still use the old open top truck and rely on manual labour to haul the garbage up.

But I sure wouldn't mind going up again, just this time I'd like a companion who will be able to explore Rockie with me and see what else it had to offer....

Dang dang dang dang........

14 October 2007, Sunday - I do....

Under the brilliant dazzling sun (so brilliant and dazzling that I got sunburnt!), on Mt. Cotton and witnessed by more than a hundred guests, Kelvin and Winnie were pronounced man and wife by Pastor Ngar Fei.

Of course it wasn't that easy.

Kelvin's mom, sister and best man - Kenneth Foo - had flown from Singapore to Brisbane to attend their wedding.

Kelvin's mom and Esmond believed that this is Kelvin's late father coming to witness his eldest child's marriage. Kenneth said that having a moth visiting during happy events are auspicious signs. This moth stayed in a particular spot on the wall for more than 24 hours and disappeared about two days later.

The night before the wedding, Kelvin had to bath, put on his new pyjamas and go through the 'hair combing' ceremony, blessing his marriage with Winnie with eternal love and joy. All had helped with the last minute preparations of his wedding.

We woke bright and early on the wedding day. Esmond and I went to collect his bridal bouquet and delivered the bridesmaid's bouquet and some corsages to the bride's side.

The guys then dressed up and prepared to "barge / gate-crash" the bride's residence.

Kelvin thought that he had to ride in the front passenger seat only to be "scolded" off by his best man to the passenger seat behind...

Kenneth: You don't know you very big shot today meh?

David and Esmond travelling in another car.

Off they went to fetch the bride!!!

Of course, the "sisters" were prepared for them. They put the groom and his buddies to the test. First, they got Kelvin to get Andrew to buy some of Winnie's favourite food. Then as he didn't return in time, he was punished by gulping down a mouthful of chilli sauce. Esmo helped him gulped down the rest. Next, came some puzzles whereby they have to cut out words to from pamhlets to declare his love for his wife. He also had to make a love declaration (signature and all) by agreeing to terms like "all my salary will go to Winnie, she will control how much I have to spend, etc etc...."

When the sisters have had their fun and are satisfied with the "bribes" given, they finally let the groom and his party in to see his bride. After serving tea to the bride's elders, the happy couple made their way back to our place to meet with Kelvin's mom and sis.

Kelvin with his mom & sis and best man - Kenneth Foo (whose built, characteristics, behaviour is very similar to Roger Tan!)

At 11.30am, the whole party set off for the wedding venue - Mt Cotton.

The wedding was beautiful and everybody was in a very joyous mood.

At night, Kelvin and Winnie treated us to a sumptious dinner at Summit Restaurant up on Mt Cootha. (Thank you Kelvin and Winnie!!!) The view was magnificent and the food yummy. We were all dead tired after the long day but the night was still young for the newly weds ;P

Pa pa....

Ever wonder most of the time kids' first words were "pa pa, da da"? That's coz moms always teach the kids to call their daddy first! Observe and you will see that it's true. My own observation have also derived another conclusion. First borns usually look like their father. How many of you firstborns look like your dad? What about your first born kid? Does he look like his / her daddy?

XX years ago (secret lah.... haha), when I was born, my dad was promoted to the rank of a "father" at the age of 31. (and if not for my dad, I could have been born in the car / restaurant coz my mom had initially insisted on attending her brother's - my uncle - wedding in KT. Dad put his foot down and said no. He had ESP or gut feel that his first born would pop by that same day?)

Photo with who Esmo call "the man" - my paternal grandfather who to Esmo is very "solid"!

Mom introduced dad to me as "Daddy". But for some weird reason, I called him "Pa pa" instead! (talk about being stubborn and having a mind of my own....) So in the end, my mom ended up calling her hubby - my dad - Daddy... ha ha...

Family portrait taken in 1985 before we embark on a road trip with some of Dad's friends.

My dad doesn't look approachable to youngsters, especially students - doesn't matter whether they are from his school or not. One stare from him and usually all students - no matter how gungho they claim to be - will cower away and hide. Even after they've graduated from school and have been working, they still have that fear towards him! The following incidences are true:

1) One of this students was working for a fax servicing company and had been sent to our place to fix up the stupid fax machine. He got out of his van, came to the gate and when he saw my dad coming out from inside the house, he was shocked and deliberated on whether to return to his van and drive away! Fortunately he was matured enough to "steady himself" and stayed on. After servicing the fax and "getting to know more of my dad other personality" through his observation while servicing the fax, he identified himself as his ex-student.

2) The same student got quite chummy with my dad after that and had on a few occasion called my dad out for "kopi". That night, while they were happily chatting away in a coffee shop, another bunch of students dropped by the same coffee shop and was walking towards that direction. One / a few of them was smoking. The moment they see my dad, they quickly threw away their cigarettes and ran! The guy had to convince him that dad wasn't hostile and won't punish them before they agree to fearfully join in.

3) When we were young, some of dad's students worked in a Tea House and had come to our house to have their 'uniforms' tailor made by my mom. They were shocked and surprised that me and my brother were clamoring all over my dad without any fear. They then asked us, "Aren't you scared of your dad? Your dad very fierce one leh....". We looked at them not understanding why they'd find my dad so fearful and said "No!".

My dad was also one of the first few to set up a tuition centre with a group of friends and business associates. He was also a partner of the first Tea House in BP. He practically worked two jobs to let us have a better life. (He also let us enjoy the title of "the boss' kids" - as said by one of the clerks - Miss Lim ;p )

Dad gave me my first watch when I started primary one. I remember that it came in a box and had a black strap, and was a digital watch. (Think I still have it in my desk drawer in BP?)

Dad brought us on a lot of trips during the holidays. We often travelled in convoys with some of his friends and their family. We practically toured the whole of Peninsula Malaysia.

Taken in Genting Highlands in 1996(?) , road trip with CH Lee and family to Genting and Cameron Highlands

Dad bought us a PC when I was in Secondary 1. Then, a lousy PC (by today's standard) cost more than RM3k. We were amongst the first few to have a PC at home! (and that's where I got my typing skills too!)

Dad sent us for higher studies in Singapore.

Dad supported me and my sister's bachelor studies in AU.

At Surfer's Paradise in Dec 2002 when Mom and Dad were here for our graduation.

Dad "gave me away" at my wedding to Esmo.

Dad fully supported our decision to migrate to AU for a better life.

Thank you Pa, for always being there for me. Wishing you a very Happy Birthday and may health, wealth and joy be with you ALWAYS...

Hope to see you soon.

Love,
HL

P/S: Our office has been pooling our money recently to buy lottery tickets. With luck, we may turn millionaires overnight and kiss our bosses Sayonara! Then I'll fly you and Ma over!
