How to Turn Heads in Tunis

Everyone's seen pictures of women in Africa carrying their babies on their backs, right?
Totally normal, right?
And yes, it's true, we do in fact live in Africa.
But it's really not what you think...nor what I thought.
I decided to utilize a cute, fun, and totally practical gift from Rachel Super...
...and well... let's just say people were talking about me like
I was walking around without pants on!!
The entire road to our fruit stand was filled with
people looking AT ME!
Oh dear.

I DON'T want to draw attention to myself. I want to be like them.
So, for that reason, Jon and I decided (unfortunately) that
I'll have to retire this handy gadget for now.
Thanks Rachel. I do love it still and will surely use it when I live elsewhere!

So we did a big switcheroo the other day and traded rooms with Jude. In the process, we obviously cleaned out the closets as well. And here is what I found.
Yep, people. Those are NOT polka dotted flip flops. That is definitely MOLD.
JUST PLAIN SICK. Are you kidding me? People. I only brought ONE pair of brown flip flops with me. Needless to say, these went straight into the trashcan (after a picture of course).
NAS-TY.
Because houses here aren't designed with central air/ heat systems, there's no ventilation unless you open the windows (which we do). If you fail to open your windows EVERY DAY, your walls will grow wonderful patches of mold. Umm, yuck.
Our place is entirely unique in the sense that it has cabinet/closets built into the walls. I know NOW why these aren't common. Unless you leave them open for a few hours a day...
your stuff...clothes, shoes, unmentionables,
EVERYTHING will mold.
Again, lovely.
Just had to share that.

So in contrast to the yuckiness above, I thought I'd share (per request) a belly shot!
Here are Brennan and I at something like 24 weeks!

Here's a shot of the fun cake Jon made for me for my birthday!! The older I get the less this day matters to me! I SO enjoy OTHER people's birthdays cause I like making them feel special!

Jude's a little boy now! He plays with trucks and all!
That giraffe is his best friend named Mo.
He carts Mo around on his bike, shares his pacy,
and even changes Mo's diaper!
...So I guess normal best friends don't do that last one... ;0)

Thankfully, like his dad, he's a good helper and does dishes!!
(excuse our mess!!)

Jude's been enjoying a guitar someone passed on to me.
Here he is making the typical guy-with-guitar face!

So we DO have a double stroller for Brennan and Jude!
Jude's such a problem solver!

And he likes to tell people about his boogers...

You can probably guess why he's fussing at the end...
I think his fingers must have pushed on his brain!

And for something TOTALLY random...
It's strawberry season here, and strawberries just happen to be one of our favorite foods!! We can get 2.2 lbs (1 kilo) of strawberries for about $1.50!! We eat about a kilo a day!!
Aggieland followed us here!
Gig Em' Strawberries
(sorry it's out of focus!)

The Revelation (you know, the one after Jude)

So I've being mulling over for weeks how I'd write this post. (I know I'm ridiculous!!) And I'm terribly sorry that Tuesday just happens to be my busiest day of the week! I'm just now getting to your 26 comments (or more) that I was behind on!! I hope this post does not disappoint!!

I'm so sure you've already figured out our little guy's name...or at least close to it. According to the comments, many of you knew the right letters to fill in. The debate seemed to be over Brendan and Brennan. I hate to reward someone who made a guess at the full name, because according to the rules, that's cheating!!! Sorry for all of you who would have guessed!! Way to go to those who DID guess his name!!

So here it is...
the moment you've ALL been waiting for
(and us too!!!)
Our newest little one is...

B R E N N A N

E Z E K I E L

E S T E S

Oh I just love the sound of that!!! I already love this little one with SO much of my heart!! Who knew you could love your second baby as much as your first!! I just didn't think my heart was big enough!!

So on to the explanation...

This man. This friend. This brother.
Brandon Rogers
is Brennan's Namesake. *
We hope and pray that Brennan can look to Brandon as a wonderful example of godliness and humility. We pray he learns to speak the truth in love and with boldness the way Brandon does. We pray that Brennan's story is too filled with MUCH grace and MUCH passion for community and obedience. And I, especially, pray God gives him an incredible WIFE like Bethan!!

Brandon and his Lovely, Bethan, have been a HUGE gift to us. They've sharpened us in deep places and helped us grow up out of hurt and sin. What a precious gift we have in this couple.
They stood in our wedding and us in their's too!
The beautiful bride, Bethan, and me (very, very pregnant with Jude)

Oh how we wish you could be at the hospital with us for Brennan too!!
Here are Brandon and Bethan loving on a VERY little Jude.
So weird that they look alike and...wait. They're not even related!!

Sweet Bethan loved on a crying Jude so often and with so much patience!
I'll never forget that date night to Christopher's (and I'm sure she won't either!!)!!
Somehow we ended up with pictures of both of them with Jude,
but SO FEW with all four of us!! So sad!

In addition...
There seem to be many meanings for the name Brennan, but we chose it with the meanings “Brave” and “Prince” in mind. His middle name, Ezekiel, means “God will Strengthen”. We love the book of Ezekiel for a few reasons, namely how jealous God is for His glory among Israel. We’re praying these character passages over our Brennan Ezekiel…

Ezekiel 2:1-8
He said to me, “Son of man, stand on your feet and I will speak with you.” As he spoke to me, a wind came into me and stood me on my feet, and I heard the one speaking to me.
He said to me, “Son of man, I am sending you to the house of Israel, to rebellious nations who have rebelled against me; both they and their fathers have revolted against me to this very day. The people to whom I am sending you are obstinate and hard-hearted, and you must say to them, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says.’ And as for them, whether they listen or not – for they are a rebellious house – they will know that a prophet has been among them.
But you, son of man, do not fear them, and do not fear their words – even though briers and thorns surround you and you live among scorpions – do not fear their words and do not be terrified of the looks they give you, for they are a rebellious house! You must speak my words to them whether they listen or not, for they are rebellious.

As for you, son of man, listen to what I am saying to you:
Do not rebel like that rebellious house!
Open your mouth and eat what I am giving you.”

Ezekiel 3:17
“Son of man, I have appointed you a watchman for the house of Israel. Whenever you hear a word from my mouth, you must give them a warning from me.

Brennan Ezekiel Estes,
we pray that you are a
Brave Prince whom God will Strengthen!

Thank you for sharing in our JOY!!

MUCH love!
And thanks again Mom for the fun!!

* Even though not exactly the same, Brennan was chosen
as a similar name to Brandon as a namesake.

A Name Game:
(read the rules first please!)

first name:
__ __ __ __ __ __ __

middle name:
__ __ __ __ __ __ __

So my mom came up with this great idea for revealing our lil' one's name!
It's kinda a mix between hangman and wheel of fortune!

Here's the gist (yep, that's how you spell it!):
-The object is to guess ONE letter of the name at a time, until (obviously) you collectively fill in the blanks and the name is revealed!
-Simply post a comment with a guess and...
-After your comment has been acknowledged and the letter has been filled in or rejected, you can make another suggestion!
-This could go pretty fast, so we'll slow it down by taking comments in sets of 3 or less. Don't hesitate to comment, we'll just post a new post with the progress and add your's in with the next round!

-I'll keep a list going of "rejected" letters just below the name blanks.

-Because of the time difference, there could be some delay in acknowledging/ responding to your guesses...so please be patient with us! At the end, we'll tell the how's and why's of this kiddo's name!

Here are some rules:
1. Only one guess per person at a time. After your letter has been approved or disapproved, you can make another guess. (We've got to keep this interesting people!)

2. Please don't spoil it and guess the whole name at once!

3.
Again, don't hesitate to comment! We'll take the comments in sets of 3's (or less) so that you can see the progress!

Happy Guessing!!

(Remember, it's a boy!)

Fun with the Fam

(Be warned...this is a long post! I just didn't want the Estes fam to miss out on picture downloads!!) (We can file this one in the "for grandparents" category!)

We had such a great time while Jon's family was here! Jude caught on to their names weeks before they came, so he was fully prepared to run around the house saying, "Paw-Paw, Tce-Tce, and Def". Yea!

A fun fam pic from Carthage (minus Jude).
(Yes those are ancient ruins we're sitting on. ...from the Martyrs' days.)
(This pic really has a HILARIOUS story. We took 3 of these pictures and then disbanded. After reviewing them, we realized we all had our sunglasses on. So we regrouped to take yet ANOTHER photo (Jon was so thrilled). But SOMEHOW Jon missed the memo of WHY we were taking ANOTHER picture and kept his sunglasses on!! After this, we gave up. Mostly bc the boys thought I was being ridiculous! ;0)
A well needed shot of Ray & Carol!
I'll let you guess who this is!

The original Estes clan.
(Jon doesn't like photo shoots...and this was photo #6, I think.
He's just SO hard to read, isn't he?)
The Estes Dudes together. Jude's excited!!

Here are some of Ray and Jude playing together!
The horse in the book was "biting" Paw-Paw's finger. Jude just thought it was hilarious!!

Jude was kind of Paw-Paw's shadow (and CeCe's too). If Ray sat in a chair and got up, he'd go sit in it and say "Paw Paw". Or after CeCe napped on the couch, Jude laid down in her place and said "Tce-Tce". So fun! He just so enjoyed having them around! And it wasn't just Jude that enjoyed their time here!
You can see now why Jude likes this guy!

The first night Jeff & Ray (Carol came a bit later) were here, Jude got acquainted quickly! Here he is just laughing and laughing with PawPaw!!

Jon's brother, Jeff, was along as well! Because Jude is a little picky about who shares a room with him (aka NO one), Jon, Jeff, and I shared the living room! It was a slumber party every night and we stayed up past midnight talking TOO many times! I was so pooped by the time they left!!Me, Jon, and Jeff resting after walking thru the a museum in Carthage.
Jude playing with Jeff.
...laughing together...

But really. It sounds INCREDIBLY RIDICULOUS to say this, but Jeff's turned out to be a great guy. I know, yes, I am younger than him...but for goodness sakes, I was NINETEEN when I met he and Jon and would hope that we've all grown up a little since then. It was great to talk about life stuff and to see where he's headed and all. And yes, ladies, he is an ELIGIBLE bachelor. (He'll hate me for saying that!) (Maybe I haven't grown up!)

Jeff also brought Jude some cool "unkie Def" style clothes. Here he is showing them off.
I think he's trying to pull off the laid back
(it doesn't bother him that he's drooling),
emo style.
Bein' Cute.
(Those Chuck Taylor's he's wearing are from Unkie Def too.)

Does anyone else think he looks like he's conducting??
(You can notice in the background that I finally
got my pillows covered for my couch! Hooray!)

I know it's blurry, but he's totally dancing in cool clothes! This Uncle will make sure our kid is well-dressed!

We got to see a good bit of the touristy areas around us, which we hadn't done before. We both agreed that we wouldn't pay lots of money to come visit this place JUST to see those tourist sights. Spend your money on another cool country, if that's what you're looking for... Unless of course you're coming to see US! In that case, there's lots to do...like talk, and hug, and love on us!
A few cool places though...like... Bardo Museum (it's in our neighborhood)
where there are TONS of restored mosaics and cool ruins.
Here's Jeff, Jon, and Ray (Jon's Dad) together.

Jeff. Um, being funny.

The U.S. World War II Cemetery
There are over 3,000 soldiers buried here.
In our entire country, this place reminds me of the U.S. the most, which I guess makes sense. Anyway, there was GRASS...and it was GREEN, and everything was CLEAN...no trash, no dirt, no grime. The bushes were groomed and flowers were PLANTED (instead of weeds flowers).
It felt like home!

Here we are enjoying the national dish of our country...Couscous! If you haven't had my neighbor's couscous, you just haven't had good couscous!!

Ok. Jude was just a total hoot this night! He was just so wound up, we laughed and laughed!! Enjoy the video!
I had to throw in one of me and Jude!
And last but not least, Jon and Jude enjoying a fun book my parents sent Jude way back at Christmas! How appropriate! This kid loves him some Daddy!!

Here's the deal. My b-day was last Sunday, but after this crazy long post, I'm just too pooped to do another. Pics will come later. :0)

P.s. Get ready to hear about our new baby's name. I'm so excited!!!

This beautiful Something

I’m standing in my kitchen
crying.
Wondering how
I got here.
Wondering what this means
for my family
my marriage
my children
my sisters
my parents
my kindred fellowship.
Wondering if anything will ever happen
here
in this broken land
with these hearts
and God.
Wondering if there’s any purpose
really
in me being here.
Wondering what
good
will come of this.
Missing home
Missing who I could be
so comfortably
back there
and wondering if I’ll ever get to be
that
again
before heaven.
This move has taken me
It’s shaken me
It’s turned me inside out
Now I am
without a doubt
changed.
And something has sprung up
in me
A different sort of depravity
that’s made me cling to all I know
of Him.
The whys
the hows
the hurts
the longing
the hoping
for something I cannot today
and may never see
this side of eternity.
Yet this beautiful Something I’ve come to know
This beautiful Something causes me to hope
This mysterious gift of
faith
that first brought me here.
Now I am in my kitchen
crying
questioning
hurting
missing.
Yet I can see
from this place on my knees
that
faith is believing
that the
great
dark
chasm
between
flesh
and glory
is not too vast
to be crossed by a God who
longs
to bring people to Himself.
He is doing something
not nothing
here.
Though I am not who I say I am
most days,
He is
who He says He is.
And to that I will cling.
He’s given me
this beautiful Something
To believe He is enough
for them
for me.
I have assurance
here
In this mysterious gift of faith.
