One sleepy Saturday morning spent at the heart of Ang Mo Kio marked the beginning of many things. For some, it would be the first time they’d ever done this much housework. For others, it would be the sight of cockroach eggs what a few of us would call “jellybeans” resting in the corners. But for ALL who were there, it definitely was the first time the reality of poverty, yes right here in good ol’ prosperous Singapore, hit everybody in the face. Karina, who was part of the experience shares with a log of what really happened that day.

0930: I message the Kang twins (Zhilin and Zhini) “ehh… i’m going to be late ar.. sorry sorry!” And i was met with a reply “okay, we’re here already but dun worry, the rest are still at tampines”. yep, that’s our youth for ya! 😛
1000: Gary’s van pulls up and the action begins. We’ve brought pails, mops, brooms (for wet and dry floors), scrubs, Gary’s very heavy duty detergent, rags, newspapers…and I can’t remember what else. But what looked like very little equipment actually went a long way. There are 8 of us, armed with the essentials: Gary, Joan, Julia, Thiam Siong, Zhilin, Zhini, Amos and me. We hear from the twins that the house needs a new coat of paint, and the general clean up issues. We feel ready for the mission. And so we head up.
1005: After struggling with the ‘equipment’ (with Amos’ head almost getting ‘decapitated’ or if not bumped by Julia’s mop swinging antics) we headed on up to the house, the top floor no less, leading us to speculate that it might be a penthouse unit after all 🙂

Here’s Amos looking like its all in a day’s work 🙂
1010: We meet the owner of the 2 room flat (it really wasn’t a penthouse), a sweet old lady who welcomed us warmly. According to the twins (Zhilin was the one who got us the contact for this house from one of her ol’ CCA coordinators), the old couple who stays there really really needed this help because the old lady has walking difficulties – even though she could walk short distances here and there, it was clear that she really needed the help – and her husband was visually handicapped – he was out for the day at an outing with the association for the blind (I think that’s how it goes).

The owner of the house
1015: Shock filled our systems. The first thing that shocked us: the ceilings. Peeling from years of age, remarks of how people could ever live in such conditions were definitely on our minds. It truly cemented within us the need to meet the needs of such households – to serve the least of our bros and sis.. and in doing so, minister to the Lord.

1020: After discussing what we needed to do, Gary and Zhilin headed off to buy the paint and the necessary tools needed for the task of scraping the peeled layers off before we began the painting. Meanwhile, the rest of us covered the area with newspapers and began shifting out stuff from the kitchen (which was really quite cluttered up) and began the scrubbing, sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, wiping, washing… activities that we would be undertaking till it hit the afternoon at least.

doing it the old fashion way, using a broom to sweep the peeled off paint fragments off the cupboard

dutifully cleaning under the kitchen sink

scrubbing the kitchen walls

scrubbing the walls of the sink area, which was by the way, infested with ants
1050: Coming back with the paint, Thiam Siong aka Thumb Strong and Gary got to work with scraping the ceilings while the girls – Julia and the twins painted after them.

Now we all couldn’t possibly have done that right? Given the space of the house, we were pretty glad that 8 of us managed to fit in just nice. So while the painting and scraping were going on, we took turns doing the ‘miscellaneous’ clean up activities.

the scrubs and the drubs were our friends for the day
We also realize that Gary is really meant for the cleaning business. Check out how he makes old (all) things new (sounds like Jesus right?)

look at him go! he doesn’t let anything off, from the rubbish chute to the switches, Gary’s got it all!
And in between all that, we had lil’ breaks here and there.

they look like drink ads don’t they? 🙂
But of course, it was truly giving our best to make this house shine and let Jesus shine through what we were doing too!
1315: The ‘highlight’ of the day. We discover that the house is a breeding place for many baby cockroaches. In the words of Gary, “we killed many lives today”. But in our opinion, those lives were better gone than saved! -recoils in disgust- Thumb Strong mentions how the amount of cockroach eggs, ‘jellybeans’ he calls ’em, fill 3 filters when we attempt to flush them all down the drain. Joan of course, goes close-up in a bid to ‘capture the moment’. Beware: Graphic images ahead.

1330: Another discovery is made. We realize that the couple’s room (there’s only one other room besides the kitchen) has furniture that’s slowly crumbling away – either due to a termite infestation or age. The exposed wires seen at various parts of the room also seemed pretty dangerous to us.

1405: We’re almost done with the major cleaning and the house is already looking much better after a fresh coat of paint. Amos is our dedicated painter for the day as he touches up what we goofed up on…painting the nooks and crannies.

oops.

that’s the ceiling for ya!
1415: And then it was time to put back all the stuff we’d shifted out of the kitchen and the room. Boy, did the re-organization makes things look soooooo much better 🙂

1430: We look at the finished job and feel in our hearts that wow, we did make a difference. So as we pick up our ‘equipment’ we left, tired, yes but perhaps feeling more like Jesus.. cuz’ we were sure that this would have been what Jesus would have loved us to do.

Matthew 5:16 (NLT)
in the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your Heavenly Father.

The next year will see our youth ministry move out in the service of making a difference to our community in these ways – getting down and dirty, giving our time to make tangible impacts in the world we live in. From the love that we have for Jesus, let it overflow into the things we do as we be the hands and feet of Jesus. So keep your eyes peeled for more of such opportunities and avail your hearts, for that’s the wellspring of life and the very thing we need in our world today.
