n. Coccydynia is a medical term meaning pain in the coccyx or tailbone area. Coccydynia is often reported following a fall or after childbirth. In some cases, persistent pressure from activities like bicycling may cause the onset of coccyx pain. Coccydynia due to these causes usually is not permanent, but it may become very persistent and chronic if not controlled."

So...I have coccydynia. After nearly 6 months of pain and not knowing what is wrong with me, we finally have some answers! I have been having pain around the end of my tailbone (coccyx) that I first noticed around Christmas. It is not constant pain; it mostly hurts when I move from sitting to standing and after sitting for more than about 20 minutes. No, I haven't really mentioned it to many people because it's hard to describe and talking about it just makes me think about it more. I have had xrays, a bone scan and an MRI. Finally, I met with an orthopedic doctor yesterday who is with the Texas Back Institute. After looking at me and all my diagnostics, he said that he really feels my pain is from giving birth to Riley. The area is likely not "broken", but there is a lot of edema (swelling) in and around the bone.
Luckily, there is something we can do about it! He is going to do a local injection of a steroid that will (hopefully) reduce the inflammation and block the pain. With time, the pain should resolve! If this doesn't work, we are looking at a surgery that involves removing that piece of bone but I am hoping and praying that it doesn't come to that. I will be getting the injection soon (I hope!) and it will involve light sedation and then it should start working within 48 hours.
Anyways....that's what is going on with me these days. Stay tuned.
