Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas! May the joy of Christ fill you this season as we celebrate the amazing gift God sent in His Son. Enjoy some pictures of our family from our recent photo shoot - courtesy of Mom behind the camera and Dad entertaining the little people (and bigger people) in our family. Since I have been completely absent in the blog department, be sure to check out Ellen's blog and sign up to receive her updates.  She's been doing a great job. God bless you!

Adventures

Help! I think I've forgotten how to blog! I'm still here and our family is doing well. Been on a few adventures that have been fun, educational and laundry producing. (aren't they all?) Logan and Ellen have been chronicling the fun so I'll refer you to their blogs to see what we've been up to.  And I'll be back again.  Someday.

Contrasts

20 months
A sweet age, but certainly one of contrasts.  Happy, go-lucky, smiles and kisses one moment.  Frowns, screams of protest and flailing legs the next.  The boy has discovered he has a will and will daily try to remind us of that fact.  Thankfully, he has 5 older siblings who have given us plenty of experience in dealing with these moments.  Somehow I always have hope that the next child will be 'The Perfect One' and will absorb all of the teaching we've put into his or her older siblings and won't need any sort of correction brought into their little life.

Then Rich reminds me that there was only one perfect child, but he lived over 2000 years ago and is now enthroned in heaven at the right hand of God.  Thankfully, though, that same child grew to a man, all the while being fully God, and sent His Spirit to live in us - giving us wisdom in training our little (and big) ones.  Where would we be without Him? Don't even want to go there.

Can you tell that Micah has grown up with a camera thrust into his face continually?  Ellen caught these hilarious faces at the lunch table one afternoon as Micah hammed it up for her.

Full and Rich

Oh, how full and rich life has been these past few months.  So full, in fact, that blogging hasn't even entered my mind.  Okay, it's entered my mind, but it just never exited my mind.  Even wrote a few blog posts in my head, but somehow they never transferred to the keyboard.
Life has been full and rich and thick with God weaving His beautiful tapestry of grace through our lives.  We have seen 600 souls come together to worship God with joy as they learn with passion to become the parents God has called them to be. We have spent precious time with dear friends from the land Down Under and shared many meals with them as they shared the roof over our heads for a month.  We have rafted a beautiful West Virginia mountain river that was peaceful, calm and serene one moment and ferocious and foaming the next.  We have seen our children grow in knowledge, wisdom, grace and height!  We have had the indescribable joy of watching our 2nd born child make the decision to immerse himself in the baptismal waters, boldly and loudly proclaiming Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior.  We have done and experienced so much in the past few months that I couldn't even begin to blog it all, although, I wish I had the time to do so.  It would be a wonderful testimony to what God is doing in and through us.

Yes, life is full.  Life is rich.  And we are thankful beyond words.

Special Heart

Since I seem to have gone AWOL in the blogging department, I thought I'd share a sweet blog of someone else's. Enjoy! And I'll be back. Some day...

Special Heart

tree in hand black and white
The following is a blog that I posted on my website today. I'm finding that since I have been
posting blogs, many are reading the blogs rather than the articles. I guess we like things short and to the point in our culture. So here's a blog rather than an article--short and to the point:)

Mike and I watched Camelot the other night and I went away thinking about how God has made women to be so influential. Guenevere both inspired King Arthur to greatness and in the end was the downfall of his kingdom. Whenever he got a new idea for his round table where the motto was "might for right," the first thing he would do was to run and find his beloved queen and share with her, and just sharing with her brought new inspiration. But when "Genny" betrayed him with Lancelot (whom she also influenced), his life and all that was surrounding his life fell in pieces at his feet.

That's not just in stories. Look at the Bible, look at history, look at the lives around you, and your own family, and you will realize that God has made women to be not so much leaders, but incredible influencers.

tree in hand black and whiteYou and I may not have kingdoms that we influence, but we greatly impact those around us, especially every member in our family. We have the ability to inspire, encourage, teach, and give the inner strength. We are able to pervade the home with an up spirit. And conversely, we can sway those in our lives in a remarkably negative way by criticizing or demeaning our family members, or by having a down spirit that touches every personal connection we have.

Realize your power to infuse strength and courage into your loved ones, and even into more distant relationships and encounters. I believe this ability is God-given and He rejoices when we use it for His good purposes.

If you have a child with special challenges, know that you as the mom can be a mirror that reflects back to that child all that God has created him or her to be. It will show in your face, and your child will come to believe its message, and perhaps accomplish great things in spite of limitations. God has given you that gift.

Consider this, when you influence those who are in your sphere, you just might be influencing "kingdoms," for you never know how far-reaching the lives you touch will bring influence to others, to work places, to entire societies. You just don't know!

Green Screen Fun

Well, my dining room was rarely getting used as a dining room, so we got rid of the furniture and the room is now home to a giant green screen. Thanks to Grandpa Jim for helping the boys construct the frame and Grandma Marti for helping Ellen sew the fabric together, they now have hours of summer fun ahead of them using the creative part of their brains. Here is one of their hot afternoon when it's too sticky to play outside creations. Enjoy!

Thankful

Love that my hunk of a man loves to work the land and with the blessing of God provides us delicious fresh veggies all summer. Thank you Rich. Thank you God.
Psalm 67

1 May God be gracious to us and bless us
and make his face shine upon us,
Selah

2 that your ways may be known on earth,
your salvation among all nations.

3 May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you.
4 May the nations be glad and sing for joy,
for you rule the peoples justly
and guide the nations of the earth.
Selah

5 May the peoples praise you, O God;
may all the peoples praise you.

6 Then the land will yield its harvest,
and God, our God, will bless us.
7 God will bless us,
and all the ends of the earth will fear him.

Motherhood as a Mission Field

This was sent through our homeschool email loop and really encouraged me. Hope it encourages all of you moms out there serving in the mission field of motherhood.

Motherhood as a Mission Field

June 16, 2011 | by: Rachel Jankovic

There is a good old saying, perhaps only said by my Grandfather, that distance adds intrigue. It is certainly true — just think back to anything that has ever been distant from you that is now near. Your driver’s license. Marriage. Children. Things that used to seem so fascinating, but as they draw near become less mystical and more, well, real.

This same principle certainly applies to mission fields too. The closer you get to home, the less intriguing the work of sacrifice seems. As someone once said, “Everyone wants to save the world, but no one wants to help Mom with the dishes.” When you are a mother at home with your children, the church is not clamoring for monthly ministry updates. When you talk to other believers, there is not any kind of awe about what you are sacrificing for the gospel. People are not pressing you for needs you might have, how they can pray for you. It does not feel intriguing, or glamorous. Your work is normal, because it is as close to home as you can possibly be. You have actually gone so far as to become home.

Home: The Headwaters of Mission

If you are a Christian woman who loves the Lord, the gospel is important to you. It is easy to become discouraged, thinking that the work you are doing does not matter much. If you were really doing something for Christ you would be out there, somewhere else, doing it. Even if you have a great perspective on your role in the kingdom, it is easy to lose sight of it in the mismatched socks, in the morning sickness, in the dirty dishes. It is easy to confuse intrigue with value, and begin viewing yourself as the least valuable part of the Church.

There are a number of ways in which mothers need to study their own roles, and begin to see them, not as boring and inconsequential, but as home, the headwaters of missions.

At the very heart of the gospel is sacrifice, and there is perhaps no occupation in the world so intrinsically sacrificial as motherhood. Motherhood is a wonderful opportunity to live the gospel. Jim Elliot famously said, “He is no fool who gives up that which he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose.” Motherhood provides you with an opportunity to lay down the things that you cannot keep on behalf of the people that you cannot lose. They are eternal souls, they are your children, they are your mission field.

Faith Makes the Small Offering Great

If you are like me, then you may be thinking “What did I ever give up for them? A desk job? Time at the gym? Extra spending money? My twenty- year- old figure? Some sleep?” Doesn’t seem like much when you put it next to the work of some of the great missionaries, people who gave their lives for the gospel.

Think about the feeding of the five thousand when the disciples went out and rounded up the food that was available. It wasn’t much. Some loaves. Some fish. Think of some woman pulling her fish out and handing it to one of the disciples. That had to have felt like a small offering. But the important thing about those loaves and those fishes was not how big they were when they were given, it was about whose hands they were given into. In the hands of the Lord, that offering was sufficient. It was more than sufficient. There were leftovers. Given in faith, even a small offering becomes great.

Look at your children in faith, and see how many people will be ministered to by your ministering to them. How many people will your children know in their lives? How many grandchildren are represented in the faces around your table now?

Gain What You Cannot Lose in Them

So, if mothers are strategically situated to impact missions so greatly, why do we see so little coming from it? I think the answer to this is quite simple: sin. Discontent, pettiness, selfishness, resentment. Christians often feel like the right thing to do is to be ashamed about what we have. We hear that quote of Jim Elliot’s and think that we ought to sell our homes and move to some place where they need the gospel.

But I’d like to challenge you to look at it differently. Giving up what you cannot keep does not mean giving up your home, or your job so you can go serve somewhere else. It is giving up yourself. Lay yourself down. Sacrifice yourself here, now. Cheerfully wipe the nose for the fiftieth time today. Make dinner again for the people who don’t like the green beans. Laugh when your plans are thwarted by a vomiting child. Lay yourself down for the people here with you, the people who annoy you, the people who get in your way, the people who take up so much of your time that you can’t read anymore. Rejoice in them. Sacrifice for them. Gain that which you cannot lose in them.

It is easy to think you have a heart for orphans on the other side of the world, but if you spend your time at home resenting the imposition your children are on you, you do not. You cannot have a heart for the gospel and a fussiness about your life at the same time. You will never make any difference there if you cannot be at peace here. You cannot have a heart for missions, but not for the people around you. A true love of the gospel overflows and overpowers. It will be in everything you do, however drab, however simple, however repetitive.

God loves the little offerings. Given in faith, that plate of PB&J’s will feed thousands. Given in faith, those presents on Christmas morning will bring delight to more children than you can count. Offered with thankfulness, your work at home is only the beginning. Your laundry pile, selflessly tackled daily, will be used in the hands of God to clothe many. Do not think that your work does not matter. In God’s hands, it will be broken, and broken, and broken again, until all who have need of it have eaten and are satisfied. And even then, there will be leftovers.

Serenity

In a busy, oftentimes loud household, I treasure the time Rich and I have together early in the morning to enjoy the sunrise, the sight of a lonely egret gathering his breakfast in the marsh, a shrimp or two jumping over the waves trying to escape being a breakfast treat, and if we're really fortunate a playful dolphin showing us his tricks as we kayak through the calm waters of Horlbeck Creek.

Another Anna-ism

Anna: "Mommy, are we biking to the pool this morning?"
Me: "No, sweetheart."
Anna: "Then are we carring?"
Rest of the family: (wild giggles)

Yes, that's our new word. We're no longer 'driving' anywhere. We're 'carring' there!

The Princess Turns Four

I should know in the blog world that anytime a post has over 2 or 3 pictures, they probably won't get looked at. But... Anna's 4 older siblings all have beautiful scrapbooks. Anna was born shortly after I started blogging and the scrapbooking supplies are now collecting dust. So, this is her electronic scrapbook. Sure hope I can just give her a blog address in the future and tell her I put it together for her with love! Here's a few (okay, a lot) of pics from her big day. Turning 4 is so much fun!
I used to try to make beautiful cakes for my kid's birthday. But you know what? They have so much more fun decorating them. I love their crazy, lopsided creations. Anna is decorating her pink princess castle here. Stay tuned for the finished product.

A picnic table for her dolls. So much fun!

What birthday is complete if its not started with Daddy's homemade doughnuts???

Anna LOVES Noah!

At Anna's birthday dinner with Grandma and Grandpa on our back porch, we went around the table and each person told Anna what they love about her. Anna was grinning from ear to ear as she heard an earful of wonderful things. After the last person had finished speaking, Anna sweetly said, "Do that all again!"

We love you, Anna!
